Q&A: Salary/demand for secondary school ... - Education Reference

Question by CollegeMom: Salary/demand for secondary school teachers?
I?m an English major working on my BA in Idaho, and am considering switching it to the Secondary School Teaching option. Three questions:

1: ?Secondary? refers to middle school and high school, correct?

2: How much will a full-time teacher make when starting out? I realize that I might have to begin as a substitute, but would like to know what I can expect to start as once I land a full-time position. Salary.com says teachers start at $ 35,000 in Idaho, but that seems high to me (especially considering salaries tend to be on the low side in Idaho compared to the rest of the nation, since our cost of living is also lower). Every job posting I?ve seen says that it will be based on the 2011-10 Certified Salary Schedule, but I can?t locate a copy of this for Idaho (though I did find one for a town in CT?maybe they?re the same?)

3: Is there enough of a demand for new teachers? I worry that there might be tons of people with teaching degrees wanting to fill a small number of positions, and am unsure of how to research this.

As you can tell, I know very little about this, since I am not currently an education major. I would appreciate any advice offered!

secondary is usually 7-12 in departmentalized classrooms.

One reason you may have difficulty is that salary is usually set at the localdistrict levelrather than at the state. This allows each district to allocate their funds in the fashion they see as most needed. Go to district webistes. For example ? I found that Nampa Sd starts their teachers at 31k per year.

Boise starts at about 32k

I do not know the Idaho situation ? I do know that larger cities have the greatest need ? with math, science and special education being needed the most. It is past the start of the year- so finding that out might be something that should be done over the phone with a call to each district you are looking at.

Here is a link to all the district pages to help you get started:

good luck!
