Sprint Galaxy Nexus unboxing and hands-on

It's been many months in coming, but the Samsung Galaxy Nexus is finally available on Sprint. For all intents and purposes, it's the same Galaxy Nexus we've come to know and love over the past five months or so. Same 4.65-inch Super AMOLED display at 720x1280 resolution. Same 32GB of storage. Same 1GB of memory. And, like the other versions of the Galaxy Nexus, it's running the latest version of Android, aka Ice Cream Sandwich. (For those of you who worry about such things, it's running the latest version, Android 4.0.4, out of the box.) It's also got the same 5-megapixel rear-facing camera with zero shutter lag. Huzzah.

The big seller here, of course, is that the Galaxy Nexus is one of Sprint's first LTE-enabled phones. That's the good news. The bad news is that Sprint hasn't yet turned on its LTE network. So it's 3G-only for now. But once that switch is flipped, we're expecting to see some impressive data speeds. Oh, and because we're talking Sprint here, it's also got Google Wallet built in from the outset. So there's that.

Check out our official unboxing and initial hands-on above.

Business-minded HP 'Slate 8' tablet surfaces in leaked image

Image

This one is still very much unconfirmed, but a "trusted source" recently provided Neowin.net with the image you see above, which purports to be a mockup of a forthcoming business-minded tablet from HP dubbed the Slate 8. That's obviously a Windows 8 tablet and, if the details are to be believed, you can expect a 10.1-inch display, eight to ten hours of battery life, optional pen-based input, a docking station of some sort, an outdoor viewing option and a number of business-friendly security measures -- all in a package that's 9.2mm thick and about 1.5 pounds. Adding some weight to leak is ZDNet's Mary Jo Foley, who hasn't been able to confirm it outright, but says that after a bit of investigation she is "inclined to believe this is a real mock-up and is part of HP's line up of business desktops and laptops it will be touting this year."

Star Castle finally finds a home on the Atari 2600, gets a redesigned cartridge

Image

Halo may have made its way to the Atari 2600, but wouldn't porting a retro game to this '70s-era console be more appropriate? MAKE Magazine has the skinny on former Atari dev Scott Williamson's port of the Cinematronics shooter Star Castle. Though Atari execs decided the title was too complicated to bring over in the '80s, Williamson took it upon himself to make that transition possible. The result of some serious coding is 8K of ROM and 128 bytes of RAM's worth of good ol' space war. But he didn't stop there -- he redesigned the cartridge with a transparent casing and LEDs that flash during gameplay. Click through to the source link for the full step-by-step.

Twilio?s European March Continues With Its First Full-Time Hire Outside The U.S. [And Telefonica Loses One]

Twilio LogoTwilio, developer of a VoIP API that is used by companies like eBay, Airbnb and Hulu to add voice services into their consumer apps, has been adding support for European countries as part of its expansion strategy, first the UK and then Austria, Denmark, France, Ireland and Poland. Now Twilio is giving that effort a bit more muscle with the appointment of its first full-time, permanent employee outside the U.S. James Parton is joining the company as its new European marketing director. His hiring is also effectively a jab at the carrier market that Twilio very much has the chance to really disrupt: Parton has been poached from Telefonica, the Spanish mobile powerhouse, where he has most recently been running developer marketing for Telefonica's multi-regional API effort BlueVia, and before that for BlueVia's more local precursor, Litmus at O2 UK.

Jennifer Hudson Exits Courtroom in Wake of Disturbing Photos

A day after taking the stand in the murder case against William Balfour - and breaking down when a photo of her mom was presented - Jennifer Hudson couldn't handle being in the same room with the man accused of killing her relatives.

Jennifer Hudson on Dateline

Witnesses tell TMZ Hudson excused herself from the legal proceedings when prosecutors pulled out crime scene photos of Jennifer's seven-year old nephew Julian, who was allegedly shot by Balfour in a fit of rage.

He is also on trial for murdering Hudson's mother and brother.

David Otunga, Jennifer's fiance and the father of her son, remained inside the courtroom after Hudson departed and, insiders say, jotted down notes about the crime scene. Our hearts and thoughts go out to Jennifer and her family.

Fresh rumors on next Samsung Nexus, new HTC Facebook phone offered by Digitimes

HTC ChaCha!

Let's offer a little context right off the bat -- Taiwanese tech rumor site Digitimes has an at-best patchy record when it comes to reports on unannounced devices. So naturally we'd recommend taking these latest Samsung and HTC rumors with a hearty pinch of salt.

First off, it's reported that Samsung has once again been chosen by Google to produce its next Nexus handset -- the follow-up to the Galaxy Nexus that's expected to appear in late 2012. ?Digitimes ?says that Samsung's position as the leading Android smartphone manufacturer means Google will continue to co-operate with it on future Nexus phones, leveraging "its ability to control the supply of key components", according to the site's sources. This is the first rumored (and of course entirely unconfirmed) information we've heard regarding the 2012 Nexus, which would be the third Google flagship phone to come out of Samsung. The phone would presumably be the reference device for the next version of Android, said to be codenamed "Jelly Bean."

In other news, ?Digitimes? also reports that HTC and Facebook are preparing to team up on another Facebook phone, which will come to market "in the third quarter of 2012 at the earliest." The two companies co-operated on the HTC ChaCha (Status) and Salsa last year, though neither device was met with much success. The new phone, which is said to be running Android, "will have a platform exclusive to Facebook to enable and integrate all functions available on the social networking site", according to the site's sources. That's pretty vague, but based on the direction Facebook's taking its official Android app, we wouldn't be surprised to see Facebook integration baked into the native camera and messaging apps, at the very least.

So there you have it -- two rumors, both completely unconfirmed. We'll have to see how things pan out in the months ahead, but we wouldn't be too shocked if either of these turned out to be legit. We've seen some pretty aggressive expansion out of Facebook recently, and we're sure no-one would be surprised to see yet another Samsung Nexus.

Be sure to give us your take on this latest batch of rumors down in the comments.

Mitt Romney Raps to Eminem in Hilarious Mash-Up

Mitt Romney. Eminem. We never thought those two people would be used in the same THG headline, but one epic music video parody has united them at last.

This amazing mash-up of Mitt Romney quotes and Eminem's "The Real Slim Shady" takes dead aim at the presidential candidate's flip-flopping reputation.

President Barack Obama and Mitt's all-but-dispatched GOP rival, Newt Gingrich, also make cameos in "The Real Mitt Romney," which is a must-see ...

Oxford student Hugh Atkin created the video, combining the Republican candidate's soundbites and the hit song from the rapper's 2001 Marshall Mathers LP.

Obama begins the video in much the same way as Em begins his track: "May I have your attention please. Will the real Mitt Romney please stand up?"

"Y'all act like you haven't seen a Mormon before... I'm not concerned with the poor," Mitt says in spliced-together clips from various campaign speeches.

As for that catchy chorus, Romney raps, "I'm Mitt Romney and I'm the real Romney ... All the other Mitt Romneys are just masturbating." Obviously.

In other mashup news, check out Obama singing "Sexy and I Know It"!

Keen On? Congresswoman Anna Eshoo: What Washington DC Can Learn From Silicon Valley [TCTV]

Screen Shot 2012-04-22 at 10.24.53 PMPersonal Democracy Forum CEO Andrew Rasiej told me that most American politicians don't know the difference between a waiter and a server. Perhaps. But one politician who certainly can distinguish between the two is Anna Eshoo, the Democratic Congresswoman for California's 14th District, which she has represented since 1993. As Silicon Valley's representative in DC, Eshoo not only knows her servers from her waiters, but is also well versed in complex technological policy such as spectrum, privacy and SOPA, as well as being a keen observer of the innovation that distinguishes Silicon Valley from the rest of the world.

The Lomelinos in Isla Vista, CA: Relationships Teach us to Love ...

I love this woman and I could not ask for a better wife to do life with...she is the wisest person I know, has an incredible, beautiful heart, and continually pours out the love of God over our children day in & day out.?

Relationships teach us to love, situations teach us to trust.

God has not given me a relationship or person that has taught me more about His unconditional, sacrificial love than Holly...my wife is not glamorous in her love, she is simple and faithful. It is real, tangible, and has changed countless lives.

The Bible calls a wife a helpmate. Holly's faith in Jesus as been her greatest help to me. We have been through wars; a deeper bond has formed between us through the battles of leading the church together and raising kids both in the natural and spiritual. Situations are invitations into trusting God, thankful my wife, like Abraham, has never wavered in unbelief over the years in IV but has grown stronger in faith giving glory to God the whole time (Romans 4:20).

I love you Holly Meredith Lomelino! And your middle name means ?battle lord? or ?lord of battle? - ha, ha.

PCD Venture (Virgin Mobile)

The PCD Venture ($99.99) is aptly named, as it is something of a venture in and of itself. You may find yourself drawn in by the promise of an inexpensive, keyboarded Android smartphone?with Virgin Mobile's excellent plan pricing, but proceed with caution. This phone has a cramped keyboard, a disappointing camera, short battery life, and generally low-end performance. If you see this phone on the display rack, you'll almost certainly make a better choice if you venture elsewhere.

Design, Call Quality, and Plans
The Venture measures 4.6 by 2.3 by 0.5 inches (HWD) and weighs 4.3 ounces. It's nice and compact for a keyboarded smartphone, and feels relatively solid. It's made of matte gray plastic, with a plastic silver band outlining the face of the phone. It feels pretty classy?until you turn it on. PCD manages to fit in a 2.8-inch display, but at just 320-by-240 pixels, it looks dim and grainy. Even when held over a foot away from my face text looks jagged. There are four physical function keys right beneath the display, which sit on top of the phone's four-row QWERTY keyboard.

Although they are made of a nice, grippy plastic, the keyboard's keys are cramped and tiny. I found it difficult to type without accidentally mashing my finger into other keys, so typing long messages is no simple feat. Keyboarded phones are usually built for texting, but in this case you'd almost be better off with a touch-screen-only phone.

The Venture is a dual-band EV-DO Rev. A (850/1900 MHz) device with 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi. Reception is average (Virgin uses Sprint's network), but call quality is middling at best. Voices sound fine in the phone's earpiece, but have a tendency to clip in and out. Calls made with the phone sound fuzzy and computerized, with poor noise cancellation. The speakerphone sounds extremely muffled, and is not loud enough for outdoor use. Calls sounded fine through a?Jawbone Era?Bluetooth headset ($129, 4.5 stars), and voice dialing worked fine over Bluetooth without training. Battery life is poor at just 4 hours and 10 minutes of talk time.

As is the case with many phones from Virgin, the biggest selling point here is the carrier's inexpensive pricing plans. You can sign up for an unlimited data, text, and Web plan for as little as $35 per month with 300 voice minutes. 1200 minutes costs $45, and unlimited voice calling brings the price to $55 per month. If you're more of a message and data user than a talker, that $35 plan is hard to beat?especially considering that a data plan alone will cost you $30 on a carrier like Verizon Wireless, and for that price you're limited to 2GB of data per month! There's no tethering or hotspot mode, so you can't use a laptop with this connection. And Virgin does have one downside for heavy data users: Although you get unlimited data, your speeds will be significantly throttled after 2.5GB of usage per month.

OS and Performance
The Venture is running Android 2.3.5 (Gingerbread). There's no word on an update to Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich), but I wouldn't count on it. PCD has modified the standard Android lock screen and added Mobile ID, but that's about it. There are five home screens you can swipe between that come preloaded with some useful apps and widgets, like a battery saver app. There's also some bloatware, but thankfully, almost all of it can be deleted. Mobile ID lets you customize your device with downloadable theme packs from Virgin that include applications, ringtones, wallpapers, and widgets.

The phone is powered by a severely outdated 600MHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S1 MSM7627 processor. Even a year ago this was a low-end part, and it really shows. The Venture turned in some of the slowest benchmarks we've seen in recent memory; you can definitely count this phone out for high-end gaming. Even swiping between home screens can feel too taxing. You should be able to use most of the 400,000+ apps in the Google Play store, but they may not always run well.

Multimedia, Camera, and Conclusions
The Venture comes with 144MB of free internal storage. There's also a microSD card slot beneath the phone's back cover with a preloaded 2 GB card; my 32 and 64GB cards worked fine as well. Music tracks sounded fine through both wired headphones as well as Altec Lansing Backbeat?Bluetooth headphones ($99.99, 3.5 stars). I was able to play AAC, MP3, OGG, and WAV test files, but not FLAC or WMA. Standalone video support is spotty. The Venture plays MP4 and H.264 test files at resolutions up to 800-by-480, but not AVI or XviD files.

The 2-megapixel camera comes equipped with an LED flash, but performance is poor. There's a long, 1.4 second shutter delay, and no matter the lighting, photos show average color but are generally soft and lacking in detail. The camcorder follows suit; it records small, grainy videos at a low-resolution 352-by-288-pixels. In both cases, you'd be much better served by a cheap digital camera.

While the PCD Venture gets you all the trappings of a smartphone at an inexpensive price, it just doesn't do anything particularly well. The Samsung Replenish?($99.99, 3 stars) over on Boost gets you the same keyboarded form factor and similarly inexpensive plan pricing, but has better voice quality, a more usable keyboard, and boasts an eco-friendly build. The LG Optimus Slider?($199.99, 3.5 stars), meanwhile, costs $100 more, but gets you a larger, sharper display, and a roomy, slide-out QWERTY keyboard. It's worth it.

Benchmarks
Continuous talk time: 4 hours 10 minutes

10 strange fast food items abroad

Here in the US, our fast food can get pretty predictable: Burgers, fries, chicken, and a taco or a fish sandwich, if you?re feeling adventurous. Leave it to our international brethren to show us how to loosen up and live a little.? In honor of Tax Day fast food giveaways here in the United States, let's switch gears and take a look at ten wacky fast food items from around the world. ?Some will make you scratch your head, some will make you want to skip lunch, and some will make you want to pack it all in and leave the States for a more daring fast food dining experience.

- Schuyler Velasco,?Correspondent

1. Pork and seaweed doughnut (Dunkin' Donuts China)

When we hear the word ?doughnut,? a baked good barely distinguishable from dessert comes to mind. But Dunkin Doughnuts is expanding their eponymous offering?s image,? launching a savory doughnut stuffed with shredded pork and seaweed. So far, the pork doughnut is only available in Asia, where it spearheads an aggressive Dunkin? expansion campaign on the continent.? The fast food chain plans to open 100 stores in China alone in the coming year, and has signed a multi million-dollar endorsement deal with NBA star ?LeBron James to ramp up its marketing campaign.

But why pork? ?Doughnuts are a very flexible product,? Dunkin Donuts CEO Nigel Travis explained in an interview with Reuters.

Would we eat it?: Yes, but we probably wouldn?t pay for it.

LG Optimus 4X HD gets dressed in white, shows its unicorn side (hands-on)

Image

We know what you're thinking: It's white. But the truth is, there's something intangible about these snow-colored slabs that cause humans to lavishly drool. This time the sole culprit is LG's Optimus 4X HD, which appears to have found a way into the hands of Taiwanese site ePrice. Aside from being dressed in a different outfit than the first time we took it for a spin, not much has changed under that quad-core hood, meaning it's still sporting a flavor of Android 4.0 while also retaining its renown 8.9mm slim figure. Chances are this isn't enough eye candy for you, though, so we're hooking you up with a video of this unicorn in discrete action after the break.

Update: We've just added our own hands-on pictures from our recent trip to Seoul, and as you can see, our Quadrant benchmark scores (we ran it four times) only reached just above 4,000 -- a bit less than what we've see previously. That said, ePrice got just above 4,200 on its 4X HD, and things could change again when the device ships with final firmware, so we shall take a look again when that happens.

White LG Optimus 4X HD surfaces, still has no release date

lg optimus 4x hd

A photo has surfaced of the LG Optimus 4X HD (see our hands-on) that shows that a white version of LG's first quad-core phone. It looks pretty sharp and will no doubt be in demand once this finally hits the shelves. It's too bad that we don't have a release date yet, since this was announced back at Mobile World Congress in February, and we're already starting to see quad-core flagships from other manufacturers.  Hopefully we'll get a release date sooner rather than later.

For the forgetful, here's the spec sheet for LG's upcoming flagship --

  • 4.7-inch IPS display
  • Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich)
  • Tegra 3 quad-core processor
  • 8MP rear camera
  • 1.3 MP front-facing camera
  • 2150 mAh battery

Once we hear anything further about color options or release dates, you'll be the first to know, so stay tuned.

Magnetic fields can send particles to infinity

ScienceDaily (Apr. 17, 2012) ? Researchers from the Complutense University of Madrid (UCM, Spain) have mathematically shown that particles charged in a magnetic field can escape into infinity without ever stopping. One of the conditions is that the field is generated by current loops situated on the same plane.

At the moment this is a theoretical mathematical study, but two researchers from UCM have recently proved that, in certain conditions, magnetic fields can send particles to infinity, according to the study published in the journal Quarterly of Applied Mathematics.

"If a particle 'escapes' to infinity it means two things: that it will never stop, and "something else," Antonio Diaz-Cano, one of the authors, explained. Regarding the first, the particle can never stop, but it can be trapped, doing circles forever around a point, never leaving an enclosed space.

However, the "something else" goes beyond the established limits. "If we imagine a spherical surface with a large radius, the particle will cross the surface going away from it, however big the radius may be" the researcher declares.

Scientists have confirmed through equations that some particles can escape infinity. One condition is that the charges move below the activity of a magnetic field created by current loops on the same plane. Other requirements should also be met: the particle should be on some point on this plane, with its initial speed being parallel to it and far away enough from the loops.

"We are not saying that these are the only conditions to escape infinity, there could be others, but in this case, we have confirmed that the phenomenon occurs," Diaz-Cano states. "We would have liked to have been able to try something more general, but the equations are a lot more complex."

In any case, the researchers recognise that the ideal conditions for this study are "with a magnetic field and nothing else." Reality always has other variables to be considered, such as friction and there is a distant possibility of going towards infinity.

Nonetheless, the movement of particles in magnetic fields is a "very significant" problem in fields such as applied and plasma physics. For example, one of the challenges that the scientists that study nuclear energy face is the confinement of particles to magnetic fields.

Accelerators such as Large Hadron Collider (LHC) of the European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN) also used magnetic fields to accelerate particles. In these conditions they do not escape to infinity, but they remain doing circles until they acquire the speed that the experiments need.

Tupac hologram: Coming to a stage near you? (+video)

Tupac hologram: A hologram of deceased rapper Tupac Shakur caused a big splash at the Coachella music festival. Dr. Dre may take the Tupac hologram on the road.

Dr Dre and Snoop Dogg resurrected late rapper Tupac Shakur as an onstage hologram singing hit songs and wowing crowds alongside other hip hop stars to close the first weekend of the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival on Sunday night.

The life-sized figure of Shakur, who died at age 25 in a 1996 shooting, appeared on stage with Snoop Dogg causing a lull to fall momentarily across thousands of people gathered to see the set. They couldn't believe their eyes.

The?Tupac hologram performed "Hail Mary" and "2 of Amerikaz Most Wanted" with Snoop Dogg before dissipating into thin air, leaving the audience in awe, and somewhat unsettled, by the technology used to make the rapper reappear and perform.

RELATED: Five biggest omissions from Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

The Wall Street Journal reports now that Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg are making plans to take the Tupac hologram on tour.

Dr Dre and Snoop Dogg had plenty more surprises in store for their set, including appearances from rappers Eminem, who performed "I Need A Doctor," "Forget About Dre" and "Till I Collapse" with Dr Dre, and 50 Cent, who rapped "In Da Club."

Nate Dogg, who died last year aged 41, was remembered by Snoop and Dr. Dre through a montage of photographs and a performance of "Ain't No Fun," featuring Warren G and Kurupt, all of whom had worked with Nate Dogg over their careers.

Dre and Snoop also brought on rising hip hop stars such as Kendrick Lamar and Wiz Khalifa, who came on stage to sing "Young, Wild & Free."

The Coachella closer came after a hot list of acts performed in the sunshine during Sunday, finally allowing festival-goers to party in warmth after cool desert weather blanketed the event from its outset on Friday.

EARLY ACTS

Earlier on Sunday, Florence + The Machine returned to Coachella with lead singer Florence Welch, dressed in a blue velvet unitard with a cape, dancing around the stage and singing hits such as "Cosmic Love," "Rabbit Heart (Raise It Up)" and "Dog Days Are Over."

Australian singer Gotye's show proved to be a hot ticket as crowds overflowed from Coachella's Mojave tent at sunset.

Many Emu Oil Health Benefits For Your Skin And Wellness

You'll find it anti-inflammatory, non-comedogenic, hypoallergenic, and bacteriostatic. This has typically been used by the Aborigines of Australia for the treatment of bruises, burns and acute wounds. On top of that it serves as a pain reliever for joint, muscle and bone issues.

Perhaps you may want to know exactly how oil could be advantageous since it is made up of solely body fats. You'll find it different to many other fats mainly because the fat which it comprises is healthy. It is comprised of practically 70% unsaturated fatty acids, many of which is oleic acid, a mono-unsaturated omega-9 essential fatty acid. What's more, it is composed of very nearly 20% linoleic acid, an omega-6 fatty acid, and up to 1 to 2% linolenic acid, an omega-3 fatty acid. Both these acids can easily permeate deep down inside the skin layers.

From the moment you utilize it, it is able to easily enter the skin cellular levels and carry out its assignment.

The most typical feature is most likely the miracle it does with the skin. Using its help, your skin can be clearer and more healthy. Scientific study has used it as a starting element in generating particular stretch mark products and solutions which were seen to be very successful. In addition to that, it can also be excellent for the purpose of restoration of scar issues. Given it can easily detoxify the region lying deep down below the preliminary skin layer, it will likely easily take out the marks that have stayed there for a long time, and this also covers scar tissue.

Apart from the skin, it may also be good for your own hair. The fact is, medical studies uncovered that this is a perfect strategy to hair losses.

Along with its support, the scalp is rejuvenated and it allows hair to thrive just as before. This is exactly why several doctors also have encouraged its use to clients given its amazing successes.

Its application boasts numerous various health advantages such as help in muscle afflictions and joint inflammation.

Besides the many positive aspects that one can have while using this, there aren't any acknowledged unwanted side effects. A number of tests were done in its implementation and it is confirmed to be extremely trustworthy. It's also hypo- allergenic and has anti- bacterial properties.

Mickey Factz Changed His Identity For Mickey Mause Mixtape

Bronx MC tells Mixtape Daily what it took to 'become' Mickey Mause, the 1980s graffiti artist at the center of his new mixtape.
By Rob Markman

Mickey Factz
Photo: MTV News

Don't Sleep: Necessary Notables

Headliner: Mickey Factz

Mixtape: Mickey Mause
Essential Info: Chances are you won't hear any tracks from Mickey Factz's Mickey Mause mixtape burning up radio, but that doesn't make it any less poignant. Lupe Fiasco dubbed it a "#MasterPiece" on Twitter and even Swizz Beatz gave it a push, sending out the link over the social networking site.

The highly conceptualized tape, which samples from producers Danger Mouse and deadmau5, finds the Bronx MC in character. He isn't Mickey Factz, but instead Mickey Mause, a 1980s graffiti artist who strives to make a name for himself among the greats like Jean-Michel Basquiat, Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, Kenny Scharf and Fab Five Freddy.

On his way to infamy, Mickey Mause stumbles, hitting every pitfall imaginable. "He just got involved with drugs, alcohol and sex and later contracts HIV," Factz explained to Mixtape Daily of his character's fate.

The story line plays out over the course of 18 tracks. On "Hulk Hogan & Crack," Factz as Mickey Mause paints a gritty picture of the 1980s NYC party scene on a crumbling canvas. Through his raps, the MC goes from bombing graffiti on old-time trains to posting his work in gallery spaces to parties with New York Mets pitcher Dwight Gooden. It all sounds fascinating, but his ups are quickly drowned in drugs and other destructive behavior.

The trippy and electro-tinged "Taking Pictures of Girls Naked" details a passionate sexual encounter that eventually spells doom for the tape's protagonist. On "A.I.D.S," Mause looks back on his life, remaining celebratory on the upbeat dance track despite receiving some shocking news. "If tonight is my last night, please don't cry/ Just remember the good times of my life," he sings on the song's hook.

In order to successfully sell his story, Mickey had to employ method rapping — a process where he would mentally and physically become the fictional character he is singing about. He admitted that the change initially affected his personal relationships — his friends and family members didn't quite understand the metamorphosis, but Mickey marched on. "I really had to become the character to make sure the point of the character and the project came across correctly."
