Eagles: Riley Cooper says he was threatened

PHILADELPHIA (AP) ? Eagles receiver Riley Cooper has been sent threatening messages after a video of him making a racial slur became public.

The team said Sunday that Riley informed the club of the threats and did not know who made them. The team has notified the league's security department.

Cooper was fined by the Eagles after his slur became known Wednesday. He left the team Friday to seek counseling.

"Riley Cooper made us aware of the tweets when the video became public," the team said in a statement. "He told us that he did not know about the video. He informed us he blocked the tweets because he did not know the person nor understand the context of what that person was threatening.

"We promptly alerted NFL security. This information potentially speaks to a legal issue that is a matter between Riley and the authorities. Our focus has been on Riley's words and actions."

The video of Cooper was taken at a Kenny Chesney concert in June. Cooper apologized profusely both Wednesday and Thursday.

Eagles coach Chip Kelly has said Cooper's roster spot is not in jeopardy. Cooper has just 46 catches and five touchdowns in three years with the Eagles, but had been practicing with the starters after Jeremy Maclin's season-ending knee injury.

Asked when Cooper will return to the Eagles, Kelly said there's no time frame.

"When we do, we'll make sure we announce it so it's not going to be a surprise to anybody," Kelly said.

Cooper's departure coupled with Maclin's injury leaves the Eagles lacking experienced receivers behind two-time Pro Bowl wideout DeSean Jackson and longtime slot receiver Jason Avant. It's giving Ifeanyi Momah and Arrelious Benn a chance to not only make the team, but get some playing time.

Benn was the 39th overall pick by Tampa Bay in the 2010 NFL draft. He had 59 catches and TDs in three seasons with the Buccaneers.

"Football is all about opportunity and timing," Benn said. "The next guy has to step up and have that next-guy mentality. You have to know what you have to do and do it."

Momah, a 6-foot-7 receiver out of Boston College, hasn't played since tearing a knee ligament in the first game of his senior year in 2011.

"Right now, I'm not looking at the depth chart," he said. "I'm going to work the same way whether I'm with the first team or last team. I'm just trying to be consistent and work hard every play, establish myself as a hard worker and prove I can be an every down receiver. I'm reaching levels I've never reached before."

Toddler is best man at parent's wedding

JEANNETTE, Pa. - Looking dapper in a tiny tan pinstripe suit and orange shirt, a 2-year-old boy with only weeks to live served as the best man Saturday afternoon for his parents' Pennsylvania wedding.

Christine Swidorsky carried Logan Stevenson on her shoulder at the Saturday afternoon wedding in Jeannette, a suburb of Pittsburgh, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reported.

Logan stood with his grandmother, Debbie Stevenson, during a 12-minute ceremony uniting Logan's mother and his father, Sean Stevenson. The boy has leukemia and other complications.

"We're married," Swidorsky exclaimed joyously after kissing her groom to applause from family and friends.

After a whirlwind week, the Jeannette couple tied the knot in a hastily arranged backyard ceremony that formalized their union and celebrated Logan's life, which doctors say will be cut short soon by cancer.

The Stevensons abandoned an original wedding date of July 2014 after learning from doctors late last month that their son had two to three weeks to live. The couple wanted Logan to see them marry and to be part of family photos.

Logan, who was born Oct. 22, 2010, was diagnosed shortly after his first birthday with acute myeloid leukemia. He has Fanconi anemia, a rare disease that often leads to cancer.

He endured a stem cell transplant in July 2012. Last March, he underwent surgery to remove a kidney ravaged by a tumor.

During a Make-A-Wish trip to Disney World in June, Logan fell ill. He was hospitalized in Florida before he was flown back to Pittsburgh.

During a trip to the emergency room last month, a test revealed a mass in his remaining kidney, which led to his terminal prognosis. Logan is spending his remaining days at home, where he is showered with attention from family members.

Swidorsky's daughter, Isabella Johns, 13, served as bridesmaid and the couple's 1-year-old daughter, Savannah, was her parents' flower girl.

Japan sends robot friend for astronauts

The latest cargo drop to the International Space Station includes a small talking robot, to be a companion for a Japanese astronaut.

A robot inspired by the animated character Astro Boy is on its way to the International Space Station, where it will be a Japanese-speaking companion for an astronaut and assist in some missions.

Japan launched a cargo-carrying rocket loaded with supplies for the crew of the International Space Station at 4.48am local time (0548 AEST on Sunday).

Images broadcast by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) showed the H-2B rocket blasting off from the southern island of Tanegashima as planned.

The unmanned rocket carried a cargo transporter filled with drinking water, food, clothing and work supplies for the six permanent ISS crew.

The annual mission, which has previously been completed by countries including the United States and Russia, will also pick up waste from the space centre.

A small talking robot was accompanying Sunday's mission. The android is designed to act as a chatting companion for astronaut Koichi Wakata, who is set to arrive at the space station later this year.

Standing at just 34 centimetres tall and weighing about one kilogram, Kirobo is programmed to communicate in Japanese and keep records of its conversations with Wakata, who is the first Japanese astronaut to command the ISS.

"Kirobo will remember Mr Wakata's face so it can recognise him when they reunite up in space," its creator Tomotaka Takahashi told AFP in June.

"He will be the first robot to visit the space station."

The robot, which has a wide range of physical motion, will also play a role in some missions, relaying messages from the control room to the astronaut.

Sending the android to space is part of a study aimed at seeing how a non-human companion can provide emotional support for people isolated over long periods.

Back on earth, twin robot Mirata will be on the lookout for any problems encountered by its electronic counterpart, which was inspired by the legendary animation character Astro Boy.

Jelly Bean tops 40% market share on Android devices

Android Version Market Share August 2013Android Version Market Share August 2013

Jelly Bean has now firmly established itself as the dominant version of Android. The newest numbers posted on the Android Developers website show that Jelly Bean, which encompasses Android 4.1 and Android 4.2, is now found on 40.5% of all Android devices, up from the 38% of devices that featured Jelly Bean last month. Jelly Bean?s rise means that Android 2.3 Gingerbread is finally fading away and its market share declined slightly from 34% in June to 33% in July. Google has been slowing down how often it releases major updates to Android of late, as Jelly Bean has been the codename of the new version of Android for more than a year now. Google is expected to release a larger overhaul of Android dubbed ?Key Lime Pie? at some point over the next year.

(AP) ? A lawsuit by Shakira's ex-boyfriend seeking tens of millions of dollars from the singer was dismissed Thursday by a judge who determined the case should not be heard in California.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Abraham Khan's ruling sided with lawyers for the pop star who argued that the case should be filed in her native Colombia or the Bahamas, where she currently claims residency.

Antonio de la Rua sued his ex-girlfriend in April stating he was instrumental in her transformation into a global star. His lawsuit seeking more than $100 million claimed that Shakira has not paid him according to their business contracts since 2010. The pair broke up in 2011.

De la Rua has pursued his claims in courts in Switzerland and New York, but those actions have been dismissed.

"I am very grateful that the courts are not allowing these groundless lawsuits to proceed," Shakira, whose full name is Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll, wrote in a statement Thursday. "I have moved on in my life and could not be happier now. I hope this harassment will now come to an end."

Khan's ruling does not address the merits of the case, but he determined that the case should not be heard in Los Angeles.

Rachel Fleishman, an attorney for de la Rua, argued during a hearing Wednesday that the case should be heard in Los Angeles because its judges were experienced in the complexity of entertainment contracts and Shakira frequently travels to the city to serve as a judge on the competition show "The Voice."

She also argued that many of the witnesses in the case live and work in Los Angeles.

Shakira's attorney Daniel Wall argued that de la Rua was scouring courts to try to get their case heard, but that it should be handled by judges in other countries.

De la Rua sought access to Shakira's Swiss bank accounts, but a judge rejected that effort in June. He also sued the singer in New York, but the case was dropped.

"When Switzerland didn't work out and New York didn't work out, they filed this case in Los Angeles," Wall said.

"This is a classic case of, 'you can run, but you can't hide,'" de la Rua's attorney William T. Reid IV wrote in a statement. "Eventually, Ms. Mebarak will have to respond to his claims because she will run out of procedural arguments and delay tactics."

De La Rua dated Shakira, whose songs include "Hips Don't Lie," for more than a decade and worked on some of her business deals.

Berlusconi lays out price of preserving Italian government

By Roberto Landucci

ROME (Reuters) - Italy's center right must push through justice reform or withdraw from the coalition government, Silvio Berlusconi told his People of Freedom (PDL) party on Friday after his conviction for tax fraud was upheld by the supreme court.

Just three months after center-left Prime Minister Enrico Letta took office at the head of an uneasy alliance with Berlusconi's PDL, the euro zone's third largest economy faces deep uncertainty that may further hinder efforts at reform.

Struggling to contain deep divisions over tax and economic policy, the coalition's lifespan may depend on when Berlusconi's party considers it most politically expedient to try to force an election.

"If there is no reform of the justice system, we are ready for new elections," Berlusconi told PDL lawmakers at a party meeting on Friday, according to a source who attended and who spoke on condition of anonymity. The media mogul and his supporters maintain the justice system is biased against him.

Five PDL government ministers told the party leadership they were willing to resign if needed, Senator Lucio Malan told reporters after the meeting, saying: "They entrusted their mandates to Berlusconi...We agreed to decide what to do in the coming days."

Yet how imminent a threat such talk may pose remains uncertain, with the 76-year-old billionaire apparently cautious about rushing into action before he is ready.

"Berlusconi said not to take any hasty decisions and to think of the interests of the country," PDL Infrastructure Minister Maurizio Lupi told reporters.

Officials at the meeting also said that senior party members may ask President Giorgio Napolitano to pardon Berlusconi - an idea the president rejected last month.

Letta repeated on Friday that Italy must have a stable government, saying the last thing it needs is to be worn down by partisan battles.

Berlusconi faces the threat of a year under house arrest or in community service as well as losing his seat in parliament over the first definitive sentence he has received in dozens of trials during his two decades in politics.

While he is unlikely to spend any time in jail due to his age, the verdict was an unprecedented blow and a Senate vote on expelling him from parliament could come in September.

He has declared he will continue his political activities under the "Forza Italia" (Go Italy!) name of his first party, with speculation growing that his daughter Marina may succeed him as party leader.

REFORM PROSPECTS DIM

The upheaval means the already dim prospects of significant reforms to revive Italy's stagnant economy and cut its massive debt have receded further.

Agreement over thorny issues such as privatizations due in the autumn, or the much-disputed IMU property tax which Berlusconi wants to scrap but which would blow a hole in already strained public finances, will be difficult.

"It depends on the PDL," Deputy Economy Minister Stefano Fassina, from Letta's center-left Democratic Party (PD), told Reuters.

"It's not something which can be settled in the next few hours but over the next few weeks, we'll have to settle the IMU issue and on an issue like this, it can't just be about Berlusconi's personal interests," he said.

Problems just as serious could also come from Fassina's own fractious camp, with many in the center-left unhappy at the prospect of remaining in alliance with a convicted tax evader.

To add to the problems facing Letta, Matteo Renzi, the ambitious young mayor of Florence, is widely expected to mount a bid to lead the party.

Letta said the situation was "politically very delicate" and called on all sides to show responsibility in the interests of the country. But he acknowledged there were limits to what was acceptable.

"I don't consider that continuing at any cost is necessarily in the interests of the country," he said.

MARKETS CALM

For all the drama surrounding the sentence, financial markets have shrugged off the ruling at least for now, encouraged by the European Central Bank's guarantee to backstop countries that run into difficulty on the bond markets.

The main barometer of investor sentiment, the spread between Italian 10-year bond yields and their safer German equivalents, actually fell on Friday to 261 basis points from 270 the previous day.

Italy's blue-chip share index closed only slightly lower, although shares in Berlusconi's Mediaset media empire ended 2 percent lower.

But the calm could change if prolonged political instability fuelled doubts about Italy's badly strained public finances and created the kind of pressure that brought down Berlusconi's last government as the euro zone crisis peaked two years ago.

With Italy's stagnant economy showing the first faint signs of improvement after two years of recession, it can ill afford months of debilitating stalemate.

Claudio Aspesi, an analyst at research firm Bernstein, said markets anticipated little action during the August summer holidays but tensions would intensify once activity picked up after the break.

"In September this could reignite concerns on the government's survival and the repercussions for the economy," he said.

The Most Helpful Advice For Your Home Improvement - Contractor ...

Are you a novice with home improvement projects? If you are not sure what to do or what tools to use, then you are in the right place. These tips will help you learn how to begin your home.

The more personal your renovation is, the less likely it is that someone else will want to buy it for enough to cover the cost of the work.

TIP! Choose a white tile or any other light colored substance when re-doing your roof. This lighter color helps reflect light, making your attic and the rest of your home cooler.

Be sure to lay down a tarp to protect your flooring when you paint. This will keep any excess paint off of your flooring. Layering your floor with old newspapers in one inexpensive option. Other options include a drop cloth or large plastic sheeting and paint cloths.

Pour bleach into the toilet bowls to keep them clean. The smell may be bad, but it will kill germs and make the toilet bowl shine. Scented bleach can help keep the smell.

Removing construction debris can be costly if you do not plan properly, so planning ahead is a great way to realize substantial savings and keep the project moving.

Check out any home improvement company that you are considering. Try to get with a company that has a solid reputation.

When you are remodeling a room that has a lot of moisture, like a bathroom, consider replacing the walls with something more water resistant.

A great way to help make projects affordable is to set aside a budget for repairs.

Clogged gutters can cause serious drainage issues during a rainy summer. Clogged gutters usually cause leaks in the basement. Make sure you clean your gutters to avoid this problem.

Stain your basement floors for a better look. Staining is a less expensive way to greatly improve the look of your concrete floor is very cheap and stylish.Staining the floors also increase its durability and cleaning is a breeze. Look for stains which promote shine. This is the illusion that your floor more stylish than it is.

TIP! There are many options available when it comes to updating your kitchen appliances. Stainless steel is popular, but it does not make sense to discard a perfectly good refrigerator just because it does not look trendy.

When thinking about replacing the cabinets in your home, try using wood cabinets. They are very strong and can withstand a lot of wear and tear. Cabinets are commonly made of maple, maple and cherry. All of these can be stained, so if you feel like changing the color, this is easily accomplished.

When you want to remodel your bathroom, think small. Replace things like light fixtures, mirrors, your light fixtures, and your light fixture. Add a coat of paint to liven things up. These small repairs are cheap and easy ways to update your bathroom.

You can increase your home?s value and improve its curb appeal by adding another coat of high gloss paint on the shutters and front door. Homes that are made of light colored brick are a perfect candidate for a deep eggplant colors.

TIP! Having fun is an essential part of any home improvement project. Although the project should be carefully and seriously undertaken, there is still room for having fun as you complete it.

Be up front with your contractor in regards to your budget for all remodeling projects. This will allow them to choose your contractor to use appropriate materials wisely for your renovation. The contractors will also get a better value for their dollar. This is a great scenario for both parties.

While home improvement may feel complicated, it doesn?t need to be. They can certainly be labor-intensive, but solutions do exist. There are small fixes as well. You should be ready to get started on small projects now that you know more about home improvement.

Texas A&M Freshman Killed in Single-Car Accident

Very sad news today out of New Mexico.

Two college football players - Polo Manukainiu, a redshirt freshman defensive lineman at Texas A&M; and Gaius Vaenuku, an incoming freshman defensive tackle at Utah - were killed in a single-car accident near the town of Cuba.

A third passenger, 13-year old Andrew Uhatafe, was also pronounced dead in the ambulance on the way to the hospital.

According to New Mexico State Police, the vehicle appears to have rolled over several times. Officials have ruled out alcohol as a factor and determined only the driver was wearing his seatbelt.

"We lost a terrific young man," Texas A&M coach Kevin Sumlin said in a statement. "Polo was loved by his teammates and coaches. Anyone who came in contact with him was struck by his sense of humor and smile. My heart aches for his mom and family members."

Added Utah football coach Kyle Whittingham of his defensive player:

"Everyone who knew Gaius is heartbroken today. He was the kind of young man who lit up a room and his future in football and life had no boundaries. Words cannot express our devastation over the loss of Gaius. This is a sad day not only for University of Utah football, but for everyone whose lives Gaius crossed or would have crossed but for this tragedy. Our hearts go out to Gaius' and Salesi's families, and to the Texas A&M coaches and players. We are praying for the speedy recovery of Salesi and his father."
