Evanescence's self-titled album isn't due in stores until October 11, but that hasn't stopped the band from giving fans a preview of what they can expect to hear on the disc — or, you know, threepreviews: first single "What You Want," the booming "The Other Side" and the epic, ethereal "Lost in Paradise" — or from lining up a handful of early tour dates in support of the album.

So far, Amy Lee and Co. have committed to a one-off show in Nashville, Tennessee, on August 17, a pair of big-ticket gigs in Brazil and Puerto Rico in October and a run of concerts in the U.K. in November. That leaves a rather sizeable hole right around the time of the album's release — one the band plan to fill very quickly, Lee told MTV News.

"We'll be touring the U.S. and Europe in October. It's not all [confirmed], but it's going to happen," she said. "We're doing Rock in Rio on the 2nd, and then I think Puerto Rico, and that's going to be awesome, because we've never played [there]. ... That's the beginning of the tour; the tour will start there, we'll come back to the States, do a few weeks in the bigger cities, and then go do the same thing in Europe, and then the next thing will happen."

So just when will the full slate of Evanescence tour dates be revealed? Soon. A spokesperson for the band's label, Wind-Up Records, told MTV News the band will begin announcing dates in two weeks, something Lee seemed to confirm Thursday when she took to Twitter to let her fans know the wait is almost over.

"Guys, the tour dates that have been announced are only the beginning!" she wrote. "Don't be sad if you don't see a date in your town yet! We're coming!"

?Pet? Peeves | Bitchspot

Over on the bird forum, someone started a thread about pet peeves, especially those related to birds.? Lots of people popped up saying they hated people taking unwanted liberties with their birds, asking stupid questions about their birds, etc.

My pet peeve would never survive there.? My pet peeve, and this relates to more than just birds, are people who try to live vicariously through their animals or children.? Since so many of those kinds of people populate the forums, my post would vanish and so too would my membership.? Therefore, I?m taking the opportunity to point it out here, away from moderator eyes.

It?s far too common among animal fanciers to take their admiration and enjoyment of their pets too far.? It?s not just a bird thing, it?s not just a dog or a cat thing, it happens across the board.? What?s funny is that in this thread, people point out how absurd some people on other non-bird forums take things, yet refuse to acknowledge the extremes that things go to right in their own backyard.? I?ve commented before on the people who don?t think birds ought to be owned and think breeders should be burned at the stake.? The same thing happens on dog forums and cat forums and fish forums.? Never own dogs or cats? like I do.? It?s base hypocrisy and they?re blind to it.

I think in a lot of cases, you have people who are desperately trying to live vicariously through their pets.? This happens regularly on the ?show circuit?.? People, who really have nothing going for themselves, try to look good through the actions of their animals or children.? Whether you?re talking about dog shows at Crufts or Toddlers and Tiaras, these are adult human? beings trying desperately to be recognized, not through their own actions, but through the accomplishments of their pets and offspring.? They think it?s acceptable.

What it is is pathetic.

On a related tangent, I have a distinct dislike of fanatics across the board, no matter what the topic.? TV fanatics, sports fanatics, roller coaster fanatics, it doesn?t matter.? People who take their enjoyment of a thing to irrational lengths bug me.? That goes for animals as well.? People get so completely attached to their animals that their lives begin to revolve around them.? I had a lady tell me not too long ago that she quit her full-time job and went on public assistance because her birds weren?t getting enough attention.? Seriously.? And she?s not alone.? I see lots of people who complain about their guilt because they have to go to work and leave their birds for a couple of hours.? I?ve seen people admit to going home ?sick? because they wanted to be with their pets.? These are people that have serious problems and need professional help IMO.

But back to fanatics, a lot of these people are far too wrapped up in the lives of their pets.? They?re somehow convinced that their pet of choice is ?special?, that it deserves special consideration or treatment above and beyond any other type of animal.? Go read some of the pet-specific forums, you?ll be inundated with people who are supremely convinced that their particular animal should never be kept as pets, although they certainly do and often admit to being hypocritical about it, but defend their position by saying ?these animals already existed and need someone to care for them?.? They spend far too much time evaluating the quality of care that those around them are giving to their pets and spending an absurd amount of time and effort caring for their own.? I?m sorry but how in the world can any well-adjusted adult have 12 hours a day, every day, to do nothing but cleaning up after and playing with their parrot?? It just can?t be done, yet this is the level of care that many bird fanatics demand of every bird owner out there.

While I don?t want to turn this into a sexist rant, the vast majority of people who I?ve seen who do these things are female.? I don?t know if it?s a mothering instinct on overdrive or what, but most of the bird hoarders, the ones who hang on every event, good or bad, in everyone else?s life, tend to be female.? Now granted, bird owners tend to be largely female anyhow, but I went back and looked on some dog and cat forums and there too, the people who have these issues do tend to be female.? Something else I?ve noticed, which may or may not be significant given my small sample size, is that the majority of these seem to be childless females, or females whose children have grown and left home.? Perhaps they?re trying to replace children they?ve either had, or have never had and want, and substituting animals in the role.? I think it?s an interesting observation, I?m sure studies have been done on it, I?m just not in the mood to go looking right now.? I did find a statistic that says 2/3 of all pet owners are childless, something that doesn?t surprise me in the least.

In the end, people need to realize that these are pets.? They are property.? Sure, they are living property, but that?s what they are.? I?m not saying we ought to treat them like baggage, animals enrich our lives and give back as much to us as we give to them.? We ought to be dedicated to their best interests and caring for them to the best of our abilities, but there are lines that shouldn?t be crossed and, at least IMO, making them the center of our existence does everyone involved a disservice.? Love your pets, care for your pets, just don?t be a fanatic about your pets.? When they become to focus of your existence, maybe it?s time to take a few very large steps back and re-evaluate your priorities.? Something tells me they?re seriously misplaced.

Condom Role of a Condemned Father | nanscapes.com

World is ready to celebrate the Father?s day. Only some of the children? please note the words ?only some?? are thinking of finding some gifts to their fathers on this fathers? day. In the modern family life, the role of fatherhood is losing its values and responsibilities. Is the image of a father ?child relationship the same as it was some previous generations? Or has it also lost its status in the fast changing fashion life?

A father then and now

Is the role of a father the same as it was some 50 years ago? Does it appear to have undergone an evolutionary change? Today, the role of the father is frequently forgotten or relegated to the back seat. Years back, father?s status was the major power, the pivotal role of the family. He was the sole deciding authority. He had the autocratic and controlling power over the family. From dawn to dusk he toiled and perspired to earn bread for his family. His presence in the family was magnetic. He was the breath of family life.

Is fatherhood thrown like a condom?

Father is the seed of family growth. Both father and mother build up a family on the anvil of love and responsible life. After they decide to enter into family life their love brings out children. Sex in their life is only the binding part of their family life. When the children were born parental care becomes primary and sex becomes secondary. But is it the same attitude today? There were no condoms and abortions in those days. Divorce and negligence of parental responsibility was not so much as it is today.

In fact, fatherhood today is losing its great importance. In families as well as in societies, their role is underestimated. As Billy Graham, Christian Evangelist rightly pointed out today fatherhood has become an outmoded relationship. The world should consider his words, ?A good father is one of the most unsung, unpraised, unnoticed, and yet one of the most valuable assets in our society.?

Why Father?s Day?

Father?s Day is a yearly observance, celebrated in the USA on the third Sunday of June, as an occasion to help acknowledge the contribution of fathers to individual families and to societies as large. It provides children an opportunity to express love and respect for their fathers, building up cordial relationship between father and child. It is an emotional occasion of gratitude.

Fatherhood losing its sap

In the modern consumerist lifestyle fatherhood is also measured as a commercial commodity. Good fathers are found rare. A lot of children have fathers who abandon, abuse, neglect, or are simply unavailable to them, either physically or emotionally. Broken families are abounding day by day for various reasons.

Let this year?s Father?s Day help recognizing affectionate fathers

Father?s Day is not a commercial commodity like condom that is thrown out devaluing the value and purpose of sex. Nor is it a selfish occasion only to promote marketing. It is an occasion to value and respect fatherhood and to regain its great dignity. How the children who cannot recognize, respect and taste the affectionate embrace of their earthly fathers can be expected to find out their heavenly Father and make this earth a paradise?

People might want to conduct DNA testing for various reasons.? Apart from determining fatherhood, it is being used for medical purposes, child custody, inheritance issues and other legal issues related to parenthood. It is highly accurate and recognized by the courts for the litigation purposes, but the rates of tests vary according to the degree of precision required and other services related to acceptability of the court. Cheaper tests involving analysis of less than 16 genetic loci are not considered to be standard. You can either visit the lab for the test or you can ask for the home kits for DNA testing paternity.

For the acceptance of the court a neutral third party witness and sometimes a professional to administer the DNA paternity test is required by the law. For DNA paternity identification, you can fix up an appointment with your local DNA lab facility. Actual DNA collection for court purposes will be conducted in the presence of a court representative and the lab will send you the result within 4-5 working days.

You have a choice with home DNA paternity kits to either administer it yourself or call the professional to handle the responsibilities. Paternity testing labs are available in almost all of the cities in United States. You can choose online the facility nearest to your place.

The procedure involved in a paternity test is very simple. You don?t need to provide your blood samples or something of that nature. DNA paternity labs provide a buccal swab or a Q-tip, which contain a sponge or Dacron tip and all you are supposed to do is to rub the wall of the inside of the cheek. This procedure will result in having the samples of your epithelial cells on the Q-tip.

Make sure that you rub the inside of the cheek properly and vertically up and down a few times to determine the accuracy of the paternity tests. People prefer this technique being it non-invasive and painless. It is highly suitable for younger children and it does not involve injecting needles etc. This procedure is accredited by AABB and carries an accuracy of 99.9996%.

If you have privacy concerns, you can arrange DNA paternity test inside your home or you can choose among the thousands of labs scattered throughout the country. The cost of a DNA test is around apart from the lab fee and the total cost would not exceed 0. You can choose the package according to your needs.? Furthermore home DNA tests are highly confidential, anonymous and accurate. You can also choose free DNA banking in any of DNA paternity labs. For more information: http://www.paternitytesters.com/

Russia faces crisis if Putin returns: Kremlin advisers (AFP)

MOSCOW (AFP) ? Russia faces a massive crisis including economic collapse and social tensions if Vladimir Putin rather than Dmitry Medvedev stands in presidential polls, two Kremlin advisers warned on Wednesday.

In the most vocal call yet for Medvedev to seek a second mandate in 2012 elections, the advisers from the Institute of Contemporary Development (INSOR) painted a bleak picture of a future Russia with Putin again in the Kremlin.

Medvedev and Putin -- who left the presidency in 2008 after two mandates to become prime minister -- have not yet made clear who will stand in the March polls other than insisting they will not run against each other.

"The sheer fact of the current president deciding not to continue his mandate will cause a major crisis in the country," INSOR chief Igor Yurgens and board member Yevgeny Gontmakher wrote in an article for daily Vedomosti.

Their institute was set up by Medvedev when he took over the presidency to advise on economic policy. It is seen as one of the most radical supporters of his trademark modernisation policy within the Russian establishment.

If Medvedev decides not to run, they forecast a sharp fall in the Russian markets and a rapid worsening of two of the country's biggest existing problems -- capital flight and immigration abroad.

Social problems and right-wing extremism could also rise, they wrote.

Openly attacking Putin as a conservative strongman, Yurgens and Gontmakher said the Russian prime minister was "now leading an open political campaign for continuing the course of 'stability'".

Stability, they wrote, has become in Russia a synonym "not even of stagnation but of a clear decay in all areas of Russian life."

"For such a political, economic and social catastrophe, Putin would not even need to return directly to the president's office. It would be enough for a third figure to appear from the prime minister's circle," the pair added.

They said that Medvedev needed to cross "his personal rubicon" and call on society to work together "in the difficult task of pulling the country out of the quagmire that we have fallen into."

Putin announced on Tuesday that ruling party United Russia would hold its annual congress on September 23-24, an event where the announcement of the presidential candidate could finally be made.

Whichever of the men stands, he is almost certain to win, given the lack of opposition and the unstinting support of state media for the political establishment.

Pets For Sale in OKLAHOMA | Maine Coon Cat | Rick Buettner on ...

About The Breed: Maine Coon
History
In the 16th and 17th centuries, domestic cats brought over from Europe faced very severe winters in New England where only the strongest and most adaptable cats survived. Through natural selection (as opposed to selective breeding), the Maine Coon developed into a large, rugged cat with a water-resistant, thick coat and a hardy constitution. The origin of the breed (and its name) has several, often fantastic, stories surrounding it. One comes from a legend that a domestic cat released in the wilds of Maine interbred with a raccoon, resulting in offspring with the Maine Coon's characteristics. Though this is biologically impossible, this myth, bolstered by the bushy tail and the most common coloring (a raccoon-like brown tabby) could have led to the adoption of the name 'Maine Coon'. Another story is that the cat was named after a ship's captain named Coon who was responsible for the cat reaching Maine shores. Another popular story is that the breed sprang from the six pet cats which Marie Antoinette sent to Wiscasset, Maine when she was planning to escape from France during the French Revolution. However, most breeders today believe that the breed originated in matings between pre-existing shorthaired domestic cats and overseas longhairs (perhaps Angora types introduced by New England seamen, or longhairs brought to America by the Vikings). Maine Coons' long coats resemble their European counterparts, the Norwegian Forest Cats. Maine Coons are known as the gentle giant. Description
The Maine Coon is one of the largest breeds of domestic cat, known for its intelligence, playfulness as well as distinctive physical appearance. The breed is one of the oldest natural breeds in North America and originated from New England, making it America's first indigenous show cat.

Maine Coons are very large and energetic cats, sometimes weighing 11.3 kilograms (25 pounds); the average weight is 6 to 9 kilograms (13-20 pounds) for adult males and less (7-11 pounds) for females. Male Maine Coons may grow to a length in excess of 1 metre (40 inches); the longest cat on record is a Maine Coon 121cm (49 inches) in length. Growth to full size often takes longer than for most cats, with Maine Coons usually reaching full size at age three or four.

The most common color/pattern in the breed is brown with tabby markings. Maine Coons are recognized in all colors, including tortoiseshell, except for chocolate, lavender, ticked tabby, and the point-restricted ("Siamese") pattern. Eye color also varies widely. All patterns may have green, green-gold, or gold. Blue eyes, or one blue eye with one gold eye, are possible in white coat cats.

Maine Coons have medium-long, dense fur, with longer hair, or a ruff, on their chests similar to the mane of a lion (which is why the breed is sometimes humorously called the "Mane Coon"). Their fur consists of two layers - an undercoat and an additional layer of longer guard hairs, which gives the breed their key physical feature. The fur is generally very soft. Maine Coons have long hair on the backs of their legs (called pantaloons or britches) and between their toes which helps to keep warm in the cold. They also have bushy plumed tails and broad, angular heads, squared-off muzzles and wide-set ears topped with tufts of fur. Most Maine Coons keep their fur in good order without the need for additional human grooming, but due to the length and quantity of hair, most will also benefit from a simple brushing once a week. While the Coon may be polydactyl, having one or more extra toes on their paws, this trait is generally bred out.

They have especially large and furry tails, and have been called "the tail with the cat attached".

General Information
A genetic predisposition towards hypertrophic cardiomyopathy appears in some genetic lines of the Maine Coon population. In extreme cases, this condition can result in the sudden death of what appears to be an otherwise healthy animal. It can be detected by regular cardiac ultrasounds of pets between the ages of 3 and 6, the age at which the disease becomes detectable. Responsible breeders, in an effort to reduce the occurrence of HCM, now screen their animals long-term and make this information available to potential pet buyers.

In the past, Taurine deficiency was a common cause of dilated cardiomyopathy in all cats, including Maine Coons. Since the pet food industry started adding Taurine to cat food, this kind of cardiomyopathy is increasingly rare. Taurine-related cardiomyopathy can be cured with the addition of the nutrient to the diet, but genetic HCM causes a permanent enlargement of the left ventricle and is rarely treatable.

Other potential health problems include hip dysplasia and Polycystic Kidney Disease. However, Maine Coons are generally quite healthy and resilient animals.

Physicality
Male Maine Coons may grow to a length in excess of 1 metre (40 inches) Personality
Maine Coons are a breed distinguished by intelligence, dexterity and playfulness. They have a tendency to use their front paws extensively (often curling the paw round to pick objects up) and as a consequence will easily learn to open cabinet doors, turn on water faucets, or pick up small objects. Some Maine Coons will eat from their paws, rather than eating from the bowl itself.

Due to their above-average intelligence, Maine Coons are known to be one of the easiest cat breeds to train. Maine Coons are noted for their ability to trill their meows, which sounds like a combination of a purr and a meow, and they tend to make this sound when happy or startled. They are noted for rarely eating alone, preferring to eat in the company of other cats or humans. Maine Coons are usually not "lap" cats, and many Maine Coons, possibly because of their size, are not comfortable with sitting on a person's lap or chest, though this may depend on the personality of the individual cat.

Some Maine Coons enjoy playing with, but not usually in, water. They may dip toys in their water bowls before playing with them, or just tip the water bowl over. They may also skim their paws across the surface of their water bowl. Maine Coons occasionally engage in mischievous behavior when bored, such as deliberately pushing things off tables and the tops of refrigerators with their paws.

Maine Coons can be very dog-like in their behavior. Playing fetch is a favorite game. As with dogs, they will bring their ball, drop it at the feet of their intended playmate and wait for the ball to be thrown.

US accuses Iran of 'secret deal' with al-Qaida (AP)

WASHINGTON ? The Obama administration accused Iran on Thursday of entering into a "secret deal" with an al-Qaida offshoot that provides money and recruits for attacks in Afghanistan and Pakistan. The Treasury Department designated six members of the unit as terrorists subject to U.S. sanctions.

The announcement was made despite disagreements in the U.S. intelligence community about the extent of direct links between the Iranian government and al-Qaida, officials said. Most analysts agree there is a murky relationship between the two and at least some cooperation.

But Thursday's allegations go further. Treasury said its exposure of the clandestine agreement would disrupt al-Qaida operations by shedding light on Iran's role as a "critical transit point" for money and extremists reaching Pakistan and Afghanistan.

"This network serves as the core pipeline through which al-Qaida moves money, facilitators and operatives from across the Middle East to South Asia," a statement said.

Treasury said a branch headed by Ezedin Abdel Aziz Khalil was operating in Iran with the Tehran government's blessing, funneling funds collected from across the Arab world to al-Qaida's senior leaders in Pakistan. Khalil, the department said, has operated within Iran's borders for six years.

Also targeted by the sanctions is Atiyah Abd al-Rahman, appointed by Osama bin Laden as al-Qaida's envoy in Iran after serving as a commander in Pakistan's tribal areas. As an emissary, al-Rahman is allowed to travel in and out of Iran with the permission of government officials, the statement claimed.

The sanctions block any assets the individuals might have held in the United States, and bans Americans from doing any business with them.

No Iranian officials were cited for complicity in terrorism. The others targeted were Umid Muhammadi, described as a key planner for al-Qaida in Iraq's attacks; Salim Hasan Khalifa Rashid al-Kuwari and Abdallah Ghanim Mafuz Muslim al-Khawar, Qatar-based financial supporters who've allegedly helped extremists travel across the region; and Ali Hassan Ali al-Ajmi, a Kuwait-based fundraiser for al-Qaida and the Taliban.

David S. Cohen, Treasury's point man for terrorism and financial intelligence, said Iran entered a "secret deal with al-Qaida allowing it to funnel funds and operatives through its territory." He didn't provide any details of that agreement, but said the sanctions seek to disrupt al-Qaida's work in Iraq and deny the terrorist group's leadership much-needed support.

"Iran is the leading state sponsor of terrorism in the world today," Cohen said in a statement. "We are illuminating yet another aspect of Iran's unmatched support for terrorism."

The action comes a day after the top U.S. commander for special operations forces said al-Qaida is bloodied and "nearing its end," even as he warned that the next generation of militants could keep special operations fighting for a decade to come.

Navy SEAL Adm. Eric T. Olson said bin Laden's killing on May 2 was a near-fatal blow for the organization created by bin Laden and led from his Pakistan hideout. He said the group already had lost steam because of the revolts of the Arab Spring, which proved the Muslim world did not need terrorism to bring down governments, from Tunisia to Egypt.

Treasury's public allegations against Iran may reflect part of a strategy to expand the pressure on smaller, less well-established offshoots of al-Qaida as the weakening of the group's leadership threatens to make its activities more disparate. Washington already has re-focused much attention on al-Qaida's Yemen-based branch, which has attempted to bomb a U.S.-bound jetliner and cargo planes in recent years.

But the exact nature of Iran's relationship with al-Qaida remains disputed in Washington, with different branches of the intelligence community disagreeing about whether Iran has joined forces with al-Qaida, according to one U.S. official. The official spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss intelligence matters.

Some hardline militants backing al-Qaida, members of Islam's majority Sunnis, see the Shiite Islam dominant in Iran as heretical, and they view Tehran's regional ambitions as a greater threat than the West. Sunni insurgents in Iraq have used car bombs and suicide attacks against Shiite targets, killing thousands since 2003, as well as targeting Shiite militias allied to Iran.

Since 2001, Iran has appeared a somewhat reluctant host for senior al-Qaida operatives who fled there after the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan, keeping them under tight restrictions. After an initial period of cooperation with the West, Iran now seems to be a more comfortable haven even if it remains on the edge of al-Qaida's orbit.

Western officials point to the release earlier this year of an Iranian diplomat who was held for 15 months after being kidnapped by gunmen in Pakistan.

In negotiations for the diplomat's freedom, they say Iran promised better conditions for dozens of people close to Osama bin Laden who were being held under tight security. These included some of the terror chief's children and the network's most senior military strategist, Saif al-Adel.

Still, the life of the al-Qaida-linked exiles in Iran continues to be very much a blind spot for Western intelligence agencies. Few firm details have emerged, such as how much Iran limits their movements and contacts.

Home Security ? Finding Adequate Security | AutoRoll - Home ...

Home security issues today have gone beyond the usual idea of security as it was viewed in the immediate past. Home security is now not just an issue of securing your home against burglars, criminals and all other such situations. Of course these are still part of the issue but not all of the issue.

When you get good and reliable security companies today, you are sure that your home would be fitted with the latest in home security systems that would provide adequate cover for your home, acting as both a security and safety system.

There is a difference that we would expound on. There is the security aspect of the system that would deal with? alerting you in situations where there is an attempt at breaking into your home. For the safety part of the system, it would also warn you of impending danger but from within the home. Examples of these can be danger of fire or carbon monoxide poisoning.

This is the reason why we reiterate the importance of finding and using security companies that only work with the latest technology. A lot of people know that there are alarms that would alert of a possible fire outbreak, many however do not know that they can also be alerted to the presence of high levels of carbon monoxide. We have heard of people dying from carbon monoxide poisoning. It is a quiet death that occurs when the blood contains carboxyhemoglobin instead of oxyhemoglobin which is the result of an inhalation of large quantities of carbon monoxide. This type of danger is subtle and therefore has a higher rate of fatalities.

All you need to do to ensure that you have adequate home security is to find security companies that have a good reputation. It would really help you to take some time to find out more about home security systems that are used today. As you search for security companies, the information you have gathered would help you make a more informed decision.

It is also very highly important that you look for security companies that operate in your area. It is as simple as this. For home security in Calgary, get Calgary Security Companies. This usually is best for optimal operation.

Many people have made the mistake of thinking that what happened to others can not happen to them. Prevention is always a better way of ensuring safety. Take every precaution you can to ensure that your home security system is up to date and can provide you with the best safety and security advance warning.

Dow Jones editor reminds reporters of ethics code (AFP)

NEW YORK (AFP) ? Dow Jones editor-in-chief Robert Thomson, the American flagship of Rupert Murdoch's media empire, has reminded journalists that they must follow a code of ethics in a memo to all staff.

In the wake of the phone hacking scandal that has felled the Murdoch-owned British tabloid News of the World, Thomson said Dow Jones reporters needed to be alert "and hold ourselves to higher standards of probity than other news organizations."

"It is clear to every one of you how much emphasis that we collectively place on ethics at Dow Jones, but, in light of recent events in London, it is worth re-emphasizing those principles," he wrote.

In the memo dated Friday, but obtained by AFP on Saturday, he also reminded staff of "a confidential hotline that anyone can call if there is any concern of any kind about journalistic practices at Dow Jones."

Thomson, former editor-in-chief of the Times of London another paper owned by Murdoch's News Corp., took up his post at Dow Jones in 2007.

Dow Jones also belongs to News Corp. and is part of its Consumer Media Group, which also publishes The Wall Street Journal. It employs about 2,000 journalists around the world.

The ethics reminder comes after long-time Murdoch aide Les Hinton, who served as chairman of News International during the hacking at the News of the World, resigned earlier this month as chief executive of the Dow Jones unit.

"It is important that all editors take responsibility for reporters in their care and that all reporters take care," Thomson added in the memo.

In Britain, the phone-hacking allegations spread beyond the felled News of the World to other tabloids as Murdoch's son, James, faced pressure over the extent of his knowledge of the scandal.

Former journalists at the Daily Mirror and Sunday Mirror -- the main tabloid competitors to Rupert Murdoch's British stable -- reportedly said the illegal hacking of voicemails was widespread at their papers too.

The scandal has also rocked the British police and even given Prime Minister David Cameron a rough ride, but has so far largely been limited to the News of the World, which Murdoch shut on July 7 amid public outrage.

Technical writers and public speaking ? ffeathers ? a technical ...

Technical writers and public speaking?? a match made in heaven? We have the knowledge about and passion for our field. We can safely put one word after another without causing mayhem. But can we stand up and speak in front of a crowd? More importantly, what would we do when confronted by a chandelier?

To find out whether you can do it or not, try Scott Berkun?s book, Confessions of a public speaker. I?ve just finished reading the book, with great enjoyment and plentiful note taking.

Technical communicators who do it already

Anne Gentle, Janet Swisher, Tony Self, Rhonda Bracey, Char James-Tanny, Tom Johnson, Sue Heim, Joe Welinske, Ellis Pratt, and many more. All excellent speakers and presenters. Perhaps most people reading this post have a public-speaking story to tell, either of horror or of triumph. :)

Until two years ago, you could have blown me down with a feather duster if you?d told told me that I would speak at a conference. Then I met Joe Welinske and started blabbing about my love of documentation wikis. There was probably a lot of arm waving and even a bit of in-place leaping about. Joe quickly suggested that I speak at the next WritersUA conference. I remember silence. I probably went pale. But I must have said yes, because within a few months I found myself on stage. To my absolute astonishment, my presentation went reasonably well. Since then I?ve presented sessions at a few conferences, and I enjoy the experience more each time.

At work, our team has decided to investigate public speaking as a way of sharing our experiences with others and of learning from others too. I tweeted about this during a #tcchat on Twitter, and Andrew Frayling recommended the book, Confessions of a public speaker, by Scott Berkun. Andrew is right. It?s good.

The terrors of public speaking

"Confessions of a public speaker" by Scott Berkun

One of the very first things I learned from Scott?s book is that fear of public speaking is a good thing. It?s your body?s way of preparing for a challenge. Without it, how would you cope when ?a legion of escaped half-lion, half-ninja warriors fall through the ceiling and surround you, with the sole mission of converting your fine flesh into thin sandwich-ready slices?? (Page 16.)

Now, that may sound a bit of a stretch. But think again. Towards the end of the book is a set of stories of the situations some hapless speakers have faced. Dan Roam was on stage in Moscow when ?six balaclava-hooded and heavily armed OMON troops (Moscow equivalent of a SWAT team)? burst in, grabbed an audience member and marched out again. (Page 184.) That story makes the average tech comm conference seem a little quiet.

It is strangely comforting to read a list of things that have gone wrong for other speakers!

Another of the stories, called ?Watch your slides?, is told by Gerv Markham. His laptop with slides, and all his other luggage, was stolen in a subway station when he was on his way to give a presentation. Since then, Gerv always takes a cab.

Gerv?s experience reminded me of what happened just before my very first presentation ever. It was also my very first trip to the United States. I took a cab from the hotel, and unwisely let the cab driver put my laptop bag in the trunk with the rest of my luggage. When we arrived at our destination, the driver jumped out, grabbed my bags before I could get to them, perched the laptop bag on top of the suitcase, and then turned round to me for his fare. The laptop fell off the suitcase with a loud thump.

When I opened the bag, I found that the laptop casing was squewed, the DVD drive was permanently jammed open, and there was an ominous rattle coming from deep inside the computer. But, wonder of wonders, it booted up and worked. So I left it like that. I didn?t even try to fix the DVD drive or straighten anything at all, until the presentation was over and I was safely back in Sydney.

So, Gerv, cabs are not safe modes of transport for presentations either. :)

Good solid advice

Scott?s book is full of stories, and it?s full of tips too. The advice on page 19 rings true with me, about the importance of practising your presentation thoroughly. Page 21 has some great tips about how to prepare immediately before your speech.

I loved the description of the importance of a title. It ?divides the universe into what you will talk about and what you won?t?. (Page 61.) And there?s an inspiring description of the only moment when you?ll have the full attention of everyone in the room: the silence just before you start speaking! (Page 80.)

Scott reveals a mild obsession with and definite antipathy towards chandeliers. (Page 40-4.) But hey, we?re all entitled to our oddities. ;)

The book emphasizes the importance of simplicity. This is something close to a technical writer?s heart too. On page 162, Scott explains that it is our duty as speakers to simplify and clarify our points. The audience should not be doing the hard work. We should.

Thank you Scott

Thank you for a good read! I?d like to be in a room and hear Scott speak, putting all these techniques into practice. Especially if there?s a chandelier in the vicinity. ;)

Suicide Depression Bipolar and Facts - Creativity Online

Suicide DepressionDid you ever realize that doctors could be as prone to depression as any one of us? It happened in our town. A promising young physician which was well-respected in his profession and community and who had a vibrant young family, seemingly struggled alone with a serious secret ? he had fought a debilitating mental illness ever since high school. One day, at the hospital, he injected a dreadful nerve toxin into his own system, went into shock and died. The single question that goes through anyone?s mind upon hearing a story like this typically goes to wonderment about how a highly qualified medical professional who knows everything there was to know about suicide depression and all associated conditions, could himself knuckle under to something like this.

Maybe the question is quite misguided. It?s been basic knowledge among mental health professionals, among doctors whom the suicide rate is far, far higher than with regular people. Among women doctors, the suicide rate is 100% higher than with regular people; among male doctors, it?s approximately 50% higher. Is there something about people who pick out medicine that makes them prone to suicide, depression or allied conditions? Researchers have studied how students who enter medical school are exactly the same as anybody else in their tendencies to depression. It is pushing themselves insanely hard through medical school that brings them close to burn out, depression and all varieties of mental illnesses at scary rates. Somehow, even if medical students do practically live in a hospital, they?re among the least likely to really seek out help. All they do is to vent with destructive behavior like drug abuse and drinking.

Workplace harassment might be a cause as well; since likewise a sort of mentality doctor is trained to have ? they happen to be severely self-critical. Medical schools have begun to provide mental health services everywhere; but they haven?t actually managed to do anything about those statistics. Even today, one out of every ten medical school students seriously considers suicide depression having had the upper hand in them. However, depression needs to be specialized from burnout. In burnout, the doctor student just loses interest in practicing medicine to a high standard. There?s just a sense of detachment and uncaring. Those who suffer from depression, on the other hand, are just deeply unhappy. They don?t let it affect their work.

New York, July 17 (ANI): Two summers after his last performance at Citi Field in New York, Sir Paul McCartney once again hit the city, but this time at Yankees.

The show in the Bronx represented the Beatle?s third official concert in the New York area in just 24 months, including another iconic stop at The Apollo, reports the New York Daily News.

The ex-Beatle thrilled the crowd with the psychedelic bauble ?Hello Goodbye?, before moving swiftly into the far more brisk Wings? hit ?Junior?s Farm?.

His performances swung from ?All My Lovin? to ?Drive My Car? and included hits like ?Nineteen Hundred and Eighty Five? and ?Let Me Roll It?.

The star offered a rare new song in ?The Fireman?, which earned its place with anthemic chorus.

He even performed one of the band?s tunes he claimed he had not played live earlier: ?The Night Before?. (ANI)
