Conservationists with the Ancient Forest Alliance (AFA) have launched a new campaign to fully protect one the last endangered lowland old-growth forests left in the Lower Mainland at Echo Lake east of Mission, as part of the organization?s larger campaign to lobby the BC government for a new Provincial Old-Growth Strategy to save endangered old-growth forests across the province. The campaign to protect the Echo Lake Ancient Forest coincides with the onset of a 60 day public input period launched last month by the Ministry of Forests, ending on November 5, in regards to proposed new Old-Growth Management Areas in the Chilliwack Forest District.

Injured on your part time job? Here's what you need to know

?

Most calls we get are from a worker who has just one job and gets hurt while working.? Every now and then we?ll get contacted by someone who has two jobs and gets hurt on their main (full-time) job.? Much rarer, but it happens, is the person that gets hurt while working their part time job.? This can cause problems for them if they are unable to work their full time job.

For the most part these cases are just like any other work injury, but there are a few things you should know:

  1. As long as your part time employer knew that you had another job and didn?t object to you having another job, your wages from both jobs will be paid while you are off work due to your injury.? So if you make $600 a week on your full time job and $300 a week on your part time job, you will get paid from the insurance company as if you earn $900 from that job.
  2. Let?s say you can?t work the full time job, but can work the part time job.? The insurance company will have to pay you for the partial financial loss.
  3. Same would hold true if you can work the full time job, but not the part time job.? This is very common as often doctors want to limit their patients to a 40 hour work week as they recover.
  4. The bad news in these scenarios is that if you miss an extended time from work, you could lose your full time job.? The slight silver lining is that workers? compensation would have to make a payment related to that loss.
  5. You don?t have any less rights because you were hurt on a part time job.
  6. These cases are often highly scrutinized by insurance companies, especially when there are no witnesses.? They will be doing everything they can to argue that you must be lying and that you were really hurt on your other job.? So it?s very important to document how you got hurt and report it to your employer right away.? Delaying this will cause red flags to pop up and could potentially cause problems with your case.? Insurance companies are always looking for any angle not to pay on a case.? So as always, be honest, but be quick about it as well.

There are some other minor differences, but again, for the most part it?s just like any other case.? So don?t panic, get the medical treatment you need and take things from there.

Brady tops Manning, Patriots beat Broncos 31-21

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) ? The familiar showdown had a new twist ? Peyton Manning in a Denver Broncos uniform. It ended as it usually does with Tom Brady winning the matchup of marquee quarterbacks.

But not before Manning nearly pulled off another fourth-quarter comeback in a career filled with them.

In their 13th meeting, and first since Manning left the Indianapolis Colts, Brady directed four scoring marches of at least 80 yards and the Patriots won 31-21 on Sunday. He's 9-4 in his career against Manning.

"Nobody I'd rather have than Tom Brady," New England coach Bill Belichick said, "but Manning's a great player."

Manning had led his teams back in the fourth quarter to 36 comeback wins. And the Broncos (2-3) rallied from a 31-7 deficit with about five minutes left in the third quarter on Manning's scoring passes of 2 yards to Eric Decker and 5 yards to Brandon Stokley.

The Patriots (3-2) lost the ball on Stevan Ridley's fumble on their next possession and Manning completed a 28-yard pass to Demaryius Thomas to the Patriots 14-yard line. But two plays later, Denver's comeback hopes faded when Willis McGahee fumbled and Jermaine Cunningham recovered at the New England 11 with 3:42 remaining.

"We can build on that" ability to whittle a big deficit, Manning said. "I do think that will help us win a game at some point."

Brady downplayed his meeting with Manning.

"It's Patriots-Broncos," he said. "It was a great team win. We got some turnovers from our defense and I thought offensively capitalized at times. There were a few lulls in there, which I wish we had executed a little bit better, but for the most part it's a good day."

Brady completed 23 of 31 passes for 223 yards and one touchdown and ran for another, operating much of the game out of a no-huddle offense.

"It's not new," Denver coach John Fox said. "They've been doing this for a long, long time. They just have a good group of guys together doing it. ... Our guy (Manning) did an outstanding job today as well."

Manning was 31 of 44 for 345 yards and three touchdowns but lost a fumble on a third-quarter sack.

That led to Ridley's 8-yard run that put the Patriots ahead 31-7. Ridley led the Patriots with a career-high 151 yards rushing. They gained 251 yards on the ground, one week after rushing for 247 in a 52-28 win over the Buffalo Bills.

"It's awesome," Ridley said. "It takes a lot of pressure off Brady. And that's our leader."

The Patriots set a franchise record with 35 first downs as they kept their offense rolling one week after gaining 580 against the Bills. The Broncos sputtered after beating the Oakland Raiders 37-6. Their previous two losses were by just six points to the Atlanta Falcons and Houston Texans.

"I know they're been great teams we've lost to, which still doesn't make it any easier," Manning said. "We are working on things and building things. It doesn't happen right away."

Brady and Manning first faced each other in the third game of the 2001 season. The Patriots won 44-13 in Brady's first career start.

There were plenty of close games in subsequent regular-season matchups with six of the previous seven decided by seven points or less.

But, Manning said, "this is not a team you want to fall behind to."

The Patriots led 17-7 at halftime and 31-7 after three quarters. Brady and his runners kept slicing through the Denver defense with a balanced attack. They went ahead to stay, 14-7, midway through the second quarter on a 14-play drive (seven pass plays and seven runs) capped by Shane Vereen's 1-yard run.

Ridley had his third 100-yard rushing game of his career, all this season. Wes Welker, the NFL's leading receiver last year with 122 catches, had 13 for 104 yards.

"There were a few times where I didn't get open," he said, "but for the most part I feel like I got open a lot and was able to make some plays."

The Broncos wasted an excellent opportunity on their first series. Manning hit Thomas with a 43-yard completion to the Patriots 10-yard line, but Sterling Moore stripped the ball and recovered the fumble. The Patriots went four-and-out on the ensuing possession then the Patriots scored on their next three possessions ? 84 yards to Brady's 8-yard pass to Welker, 80 yards to Vereen's touchdown and 93 yards to Stephen Gostkowski's 23-yard field goal.

Denver did tie the game 7-7 on Manning's 1-yard pass to Joel Dreessen but didn't reach the end zone again until Manning hit Decker to end a 90-yard march, cutting the lead to 31-14 with 1:08 left in the third.

But Manning couldn't bring the Broncos all the way back.

"A week ago, we put it all together," Fox said. "I would have expected us to put it all together more this week."

But Brady and his offense is a lot tougher than the Raiders.

"You have to be balanced and I think we were doing a very good job when we're calling the runs," Brady said.

Notes: McGahee rushed for just 51 yards on 14 carries after gaining more than 100 in two of his previous three games. ... The Patriots rushed for more than 200 yards in consecutive games for the first time since 1978. ... New England outgained Denver 444 yards to 402.

Using Quality Architectural Images to Market a House Plan under ...

Guest post by Alan Mascord Design Associates

Alan Mascord Design Associates, Inc.New technology can have a dramatic impact on any industry. Consider the shift from two-dimensional cartoon characters to three-dimensional, computer-generated animation. In the earlier days of animation, any on-screen movement could draw a crowd. Now it?s a given that an animated film must be visually flawless in order to pull in the box office numbers. A similar revolution ? from simple to sophisticated ? can be seen in the rendering of house plans and home designs. While past homeowners had to envision their future homes based on a simple blueprints or hand sketches, modern buyers appreciate access to more advanced images in order to fully understand each house plan ? and they?re attracted to listings that make use of those more sophisticated images.

The advantages of quality images appearing on new construction listings also extend to the seller. Prospective buyers are more attracted to properties they can fully envision. The finished home you?re selling is much harder to envision when all you can provide is a picture of an empty lot. Even if you?re really only interested in selling the lot, quality renderings can help buyers realize the potential of the land investment. Below is an exploration of how quality 3D renderings provide marketing value for homes that are currently under construction.

Old - Hand Rendering

Old ? Hand Rendering

New - 3D Rendering

New ? 3D Rendering

1. Allows potential buyers to better visualize the home.

Architectural images convey what 2D elevations can?t. While traditional house plans and home designs used for construction (such as blueprints) show where rooms are located and how appliances are situated, it?s not easy to extrapolate how the home would look in its own setting, or how it would feel to stand curbside and look at the home as you would see it in real life. An architectural image shows the property in its surroundings, including landscaping, and sometimes with nearby structures. While traditional hand renderings have been used for years, modern 3D renderings create a much more realistic impression that is easier for many to visualize. Building materials, colors and even landscaping can be more accurately portrayed and communicated in a computer-generated 3D rendering, so a buyer more accurately knows what he or she is getting.

This is why developers commission 3D architectural renderings when undertaking large projects. Such images make it easier to sell an idea because they allow any audience to get a realistic idea of what the completed structure will look like. Similarly, as mentioned above, homebuyers are more attracted to a property when they can visualize the home properly and imagine themselves and their families enjoying it.

2. Handy tool for completion of home?s exterior.

With a 3D rendering, it is easier for homebuyers to direct contractors on how to properly complete exterior finishing work. The rendering performs as a ?roadmap,? accurately showing how the home should be finished.

3. Facilitates landscape and outdoor living design.

While landscaping isn?t typically included in the construction plans of a new home, new homeowners still appreciate the fact that it is included in the rendering of a future property. Seeing the completed house plan amid shrubs, flowers and other flora allows new owners to more effectively work with landscaping firms to turn their outdoor living dreams into reality. Indeed, homeowners tend to hold on to architectural renderings long after the sale has been closed, simply because this imaging tool makes it much easier to envision how a new deck or patio would complement the home. Many homeowners even choose to have a 3D rendering of their home design printed on art canvas and hung in a prominent place.

4. Improves visual communication of renovations.

Remodeling a home can be much more appealing if you can effectively visualize the changes being made. Working with a remodel designer who utilizes 3D technology can reduce design time and help anticipate problems with marrying new construction to an existing structure.

5. Easy to add moving animation, such as ?360s.?

Static imaging is never as effective as interactive, moving animations. The internet has altered our marketing expectations; it takes more to ?wow? a potential buyer now. Unlike with a photograph or a blueprint, it?s possible to animate an architectural rendering so the viewer feels like he or she is actually flying around the completed home. (And because you?re using imaging gurus, you don?t have to worry about correcting lighting, waiting for good weather conditions or any of the million other concerns photographers must address.)

Humans are visual creatures. Advertisers have long appreciated the power of a glossy image to sell products. If you?re on the selling side of the home ownership fence, know that 3D architectural renderings are a powerful sales tool primarily because they appeal to humans? need to visualize before they buy. Selecting house plans from a designer who offers quality 3D renderings of the home to be built can massively improve your selling success.

(AP) ? Miguel Cabrera of the Detroit Tigers became just the 15th player ? and the first in 45 years ? to win baseball's Triple Crown, joining an elite list that includes Mickey Mantle, Ted Williams and Lou Gehrig.

Cabrera topped the American League with a .330 batting average, 44 home runs and 139 RBIs, becoming the first Triple Crown winner in the major leagues since Boston's Carl Yastrzemski in 1967.

"It's an unbelievable feeling," Cabrera said Wednesday after the Tigers' 1-0 victory over the Kansas City Royals. "I can't describe the feeling right now."

California bans gay "conversion" therapy for minors

SACRAMENTO (Reuters) - Governor Jerry Brown has signed a bill banning a controversial therapy that aims to reverse homosexuality in minors, his office announced on Sunday, making California the first state to ban a practice many say is psychologically damaging.

The move marked a major victory for gay rights advocates who say so-called conversion therapy, also called reparative therapy, has no medical basis because homosexuality is not a disorder.

Brown said in a short message on Twitter that he supported the bill because it "bans non-scientific 'therapies' that have driven young people to depression and suicide."

The bill's sponsor, state Senator Ted Lieu, a Democrat from Torrance, said the law was a gesture of remembrance for a man who committed suicide after undergoing the therapy.

The measure prohibits children and teens under 18 from undergoing sexual orientation change efforts. It received support from the California Psychological Association and the California Board of Behavioral Sciences, among others.

"LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) youth will now be protected from a practice that has not only been debunked as junk science, but has been proven to have drastically negative effects on their well-being," Human Rights Campaign President Chad Griffin said in a statement.

He urged other states to follow California's lead.

Lieu said the psychiatrist who pioneered the therapy, Dr. Robert Spitzer, has since renounced it and has apologized to the gay and lesbian community.

"If anyone had any doubts such practices were evil, they need only listen to accounts of victims who went through this abusive practice," Lieu said in a statement.

During the legislature's consideration of the bill, people who had undergone the therapy as minors testified about why they wanted the practice banned.

"As a young teen, the anti-gay practice of so-called conversion therapy destroyed my life and tore apart my family," witness Ryan Kendall told legislators.

Several openly gay legislators gave emotional speeches in support of the measure, sharing how they were bullied because of their sexual orientation as youths.

All major medical and mental health organizations including the American Medical Association and the American Psychiatric Association have denounced the practice, supporters said.

Opponents said the bill encroached on the rights of parents to make choices for their children. They also said politicians should not regulate what they considered to be a matter for medical boards to decide.

The measure will take effect on January 1.

Advocates for a bike-friendly Richmond Region should get what they want for the community.

Smooth roads.

Surfaces that don't blow out tires.

Clearly marked bike paths, safe from cars and trucks.

A coordinated regional network that unites urban, suburban and rural; cities and counties.

One major revitalized route that goes north and south. Another that travels east and west.

Completion of the Virginia Capital Trail from Richmond to Williamsburg.

A universal commitment to a healthier Richmond.

A welcoming environment just in time for the 2015 UCI Road World Championships.

* * * * *

For those worried about a free ride here, there's a return on the region's investment:

A fitter Richmond that better combats obesity and disease with exercise and the encouragement to move around.

A big lift to amenities sought by generations seeking to be less car-dependent.

An incentive to counter sprawl with more efficient community planning that rewards convenience and utility.

Lesser chances of bike-car accidents.

The land complement to the 2012 distinction of being the nation's top river town.

There's also a bonus reason that was on display at the 41st Public Square: Advocates of bike-friendly roads are Richmond Region super champions in the wings.

This is a group that wants our region to excel.

They could go elsewhere to cities that already demonstrate what they seek.

But they choose to propel Richmond. They see it as a developing canvas that can be turned into a masterpiece.

That's got to be a carrot for any government administrator or elected official, employer or nonprofit chief.

Turn on these folks with a biking network that's a crown jewel, and you'll have a supporter for life.

A pride team that can't be beat.

Regional promoters who will volunteer at the drop of an email call for action.

A group of people who will tell the world that this is best place to live.

And more importantly, a bunch of critical thinkers who will point out a problem and, in short order, offer a solution.

* * * * *

If anything separated this crowd from other Public Square gatherings, it was this achievement alone.

They didn't stop at noting shortcomings, though they did a good job of selling the problems.

They moved to a recommended improvement.

It's not a cynical, carping crowd.

Rather, it's a refreshing, reinventing, rewarding community ready to work shoulder-to-shoulder with neighbors on the concept, plan, installation and use.

In a poignant way, they get the value of a Richmond on the go.

Don't disappoint or frustrate this community of special interest.

Give them what they want.
