Two-in-one device uses sewage as fuel to make electricity and clean the sewage

ScienceDaily (Mar. 28, 2012) ? Scientists have described a new and more efficient version of an innovative device the size of a home washing machine that uses bacteria growing in municipal sewage to make electricity and clean up the sewage at the same time. Their report at the 243rd National Meeting & Exposition of the American Chemical Society (ACS) in San Diego on March 28 suggested that commercial versions of the two-in-one device could be a boon for the developing world and water-short parts of the U.S.

"Our prototype incorporates innovations so that it can process five times more sewage six times more efficiently at half the cost of its predecessors," said Orianna Bretschger, Ph.D., who presented a report on the improved technology at the ACS meeting.

"We've improved its energy recovery capacity from about 2 percent to as much as 13 percent, which is a great step in the right direction. That actually puts us in a realm where we could produce a meaningful amount of electricity if this technology is implemented commercially. Eventually, we could have wastewater treatment for free. That could mean availability for cleaner water in the developing world, or in southern California and other water-short areas of the United States through the use of more wastewater recycling technologies," she said.

Current wastewater treatment technology involves a number of steps designed to separate the solid and liquid components of sewage and clean the wastewater before it is released into a waterway. This often involves settling tanks, macerators that break down larger objects, membranes to filter particles, biological digestion steps and chemicals that kill harmful microbes. One estimate puts their energy use at 2 percent of overall consumption in the U.S.

Bretschger's team at the J. Craig Venter Institute is developing one version of a so-called microbial fuel cell (MFC). Traditional fuel cells, like those used on the Space Shuttles and envisioned for cars in the future "hydrogen economy," convert fuel directly into electricity without igniting the fuel. They react or combine hydrogen and oxygen, for instance, and produce electricity and drinkable water. MFCs are biological fuel cells. They use organic matter, such as the material in sewage, as fuel, and microbes break down the organic matter. In the process of doing so, the bacteria produce electrons, which have a negative charge and are the basic units of electricity. Electricity consists of a flow of electrons or other charges through a circuit.

The new MFC uses ordinary sewage obtained from a conventional sewage treatment plant. Microbes that exist naturally in the sewage produce electrons as they metabolize, or digest, organic material in the sludge. Bretschger found that microbes exist in the MFC community that might even break down potentially harmful pollutants like benzene and toluene that may be in the sludge.

An MFC consists of a sealed chamber in which the microbes grow in a film on an electrode, which receives their electrons. Meanwhile, positively-charged units termed protons pass through a membrane to a second, unsealed container. In that container, microbes growing on another electrode combine oxygen with those protons and the electrons flowing as electricity from the electrode in the sealed chamber, producing water or other products like hydrogen peroxide.

Bretschger said the MFC also is quite effective in treating sewage to remove organic material, and data suggest a decrease in disease-causing microbes.

"We remove about 97 percent of the organic matter," she said. "That sounds clean, but it is not quite clean enough to drink. In order to get to potable, you need 99.99 percent removal and more complete disinfection of the water." Still, she suggested their MFC might one day replace some of the existing steps in municipal wastewater treatment.

The group presented their first MFC last year. Since then, they increased the amount of waste their device could handle each week from 20 gallons to 100 gallons, trucked in from a local treatment plant near San Diego. They also replaced the titanium components with a polyvinyl chloride (PVC) frame and graphite electrodes. Because of that, the new fuel cell costs about $150 per gallon, half as expensive as their previous prototype. The group hopes eventually to bring the cost under $20 per gallon or less to be cost competitive with existing water treatment technologies.

Bretschger reported that the new device is also more than six times as efficient as its predecessor, turning 13 percent of the usable energy in the sludge into electricity. While this only generates a small current, Bretschger explained that a large device running at 20-25 percent efficiency could produce enough power to operate a conventional wastewater treatment plant. A typical sewage treatment plant may consume enough electricity to power 10,000 or more homes, according to some estimates.

The scientists acknowledged funding from the California State PIER EISG program and the San Diego Foundation Blasker Science and Technology award.

LG unveils flexible plastic e-paper display, aims for European launch next month

Image
LG has made no secret of its fondness for flexible e-paper, but those dreams became a reality today, with the announcement of a six-inch display that promises to "revolutionize the e-book market." The malleable plastic display sports a resolution of 1024 x 768 and can bend at an angle of up to 40 degrees. At just 0.7 millimeters thick, it's about one-third thinner than similarly-specced glass displays, and weighs in at 14 grams -- more than half as light as its glassy competition. LG also claims that the display is super durable, as evidenced by a series of successful drop tests from a height of 1.5 meters. The plan going forward is to supply the display to ODMs in China, in the hopes of bringing final products to Europe by "the beginning of next month." For more details, check out the full press release after the break.

Questions, answers about neighborhood shooting

(AP) ? The fatal shooting of a black teenager by a neighborhood watch captain who then went free has led to nationwide protests calling for the shooter's arrest. Trayvon Martin's parents, civil rights leaders and social media users alike are portraying the case as racially motivated, saying the shooter would have been arrested had he been black and the victim white.

The shooter, George Zimmerman, told police he acted in self-defense after Martin pursued and attacked him.

The case has raised a multitude of questions, some of which remain unanswered. Here are some of the facts of the case that have been established.

Q: What happened?

A: Trayvon Martin, 17, was shot and killed Feb. 26 during a confrontation with George Zimmerman, a 28-year-old neighborhood watch volunteer in a gated community of townhomes in Sanford, Fla. Zimmerman was patrolling the neighborhood when he spotted Martin, who was unarmed and walking to the home of his father's fiancee. He was returning from a trip to the convenience store with an iced tea and a bag of Skittles. It was raining, and Martin was walking with the hood of his sweat shirt pulled over his head. He talked to his girlfriend on a cellphone moments before the shooting.

Q: What is George Zimmerman's side of the story?

A: George Zimmerman has not spoken publically. He told police that he spotted Martin as he was patrolling his neighborhood and called 911 to report a suspicious person.

"This guy looks like he is up to no good. He is on drugs or something," Zimmerman told the dispatcher from his sport utility vehicle. He added that the teen had his hand in his waistband and was walking around looking at homes.

"These a-------. They always get away," Zimmerman said on a 911 call.

A neighbor said there had been several break-ins in the community in the past year, including one in which burglars took a TV and laptops.

A dispatcher told Zimmerman to stay in his sport utility vehicle and that an officer would be there momentarily. Zimmerman, for unknown reasons, got out.

Zimmerman told police he lost sight of the teenager and was walking back to his sport utility vehicle when he was attacked. He and Martin fought, according to witnesses. Zimmerman said Martin punched him in the nose and slammed his head against the ground.

At some point, Zimmerman pulled a gun and shot Martin. Zimmerman told police he acted in self-defense.

Police said Zimmerman was bleeding from his nose and the back of his head. He told police he had yelled out for help before he shot Martin.

He has not been arrested or charged.

Q: What is Martin's family's side of the story?

A: Much of Martin's side of the story comes from a cellphone conversation he had with his girlfriend moments before the shooting. She was interviewed by the family's attorney, Benjamin Crump, and he released much of what she said to the news media. She has not been identified.

In the interview, she said Trayvon Martin told her that he was being followed.

"She says: 'Run.' He says, 'I'm not going to run, I'm just going to walk fast,'" Crump said, quoting the girl.

The girl later heard Martin say, "Why are you following me?" Another man asked, "What are you doing around here?" Crump said.

After Martin encountered Zimmerman, the girl thinks she heard a scuffle "because his voice changes like something interrupted his speech," Crump said. The phone call ended before the girl heard any gunshots.

Martin's parents said their son made the pleas for help that witnesses heard.

Q: What did Zimmerman say on the 911 call?

A: On one of Zimmerman's calls to police that night, he muttered something under his breath that some listeners say sounds like a racial slur. Others, however, say the recording is not clear enough to determine what Zimmerman actually said.

Q: Who is investigating?

A: Sanford Police have turned over their evidence to local prosecutors for them to decide whether Zimmerman should be charged. The Justice Department and FBI have opened a civil rights investigation. Several members of Congress have called for the case to be investigated as a hate crime.

Q: Why didn't police arrest Zimmerman?

A: Zimmerman claims self-defense, and Florida is among 21 states with a "stand your ground law," which gives people wide latitude to use deadly force rather than retreat during a fight. The Florida law lets police on the scene decide whether they believe the self-defense claim. In many cases, the officers make an arrest and leave it to the courts to work out whether the deadly force is justified. In this case, however, police have said they are confident they did the right thing by not charging Zimmerman.

Q: What could the charges be?

A: If Zimmerman is charged, he could most likely face second-degree murder or manslaughter charges at the state level. If convicted of the second-degree murder charge, he could potentially face up to life in prison because a gun was used.

Federal prosecutors could charge Zimmerman with a hate crime if they think there is evidence he was motivated by racial bias. That charge can carry the death penalty in the most severe instances, or up to life in prison.

Federal prosecutors could also accuse Zimmerman of using his official authority to violate Martin's rights ? known as a "color of law" case ? but they would have to prove that Zimmerman was acting in some official capacity, similar to a police officer or government official. Zimmerman was a volunteer neighborhood watchman.

Q: When will prosecutors decide whether Zimmerman is charged?

A: It's unclear. A spokeswoman for the special prosecutor who has taken over the local investigation said it could be weeks before they decide. Special prosecutor Angela Corey has three options: She could present the case to a grand jury, which would decide whether Zimmerman should face charges; she could charge him without the grand jury's review; or she could decide not to bring the case before the panel and not charge him.

Norm Wolfinger, the prosecutor who recused himself from the case, had planned to convene a grand jury to review the case April 10.

It is also unclear when the Justice Department will make its decision.

Q: What is George Zimmerman's racial and ethnic background?

A: Zimmerman's father is white, and his mother is Hispanic.

92% Beauty and the Beast

All Critics (84) | Top Critics (24) | Fresh (84) | Rotten (7) | DVD (36)

The greatest animated film ever made and one of the screen's great musicals hardly needs this (3D) sort of sprucing up.

What you gain in an extra, faked dimension you lose in lively, genuine beauty.

The set pieces are narcotically pleasing, especially the Busby Berkeley-style dancing-kitchenware spectacular, "Be Our Guest," and the romantic ballroom centerpiece that brings Beauty and her Beast together.

The 3-D pops out to enhance the drama or energy of scenes in which settings are large and integral to the action.

Some youthful memories are better not revisited, but this definitely isn't one of them. Sometimes you can go home again.

It is a surprise, in a time of sequels and retreads, that the new film is so fresh and altogether triumphant in its own right.

I admit it: I wrote this more than 20 years ago. But, like " Beauty and the Beast" itself, I think it stands the test of time.

Disney, please understand ... what people are actually showing up for ... they just want to see classic Disney on the big screen. The 3D is incidental.

Disney's gorgeous 1991 animated version of the classic fairy tale "Beauty and the Beast" gets the same 3D treatment that was recently given to "The Lion King."

Watching this in a theater definitely makes it feel less like a "cartoon" and more like a significant film. Cogsworth poking Le Fou in the butt with a sword aside.

One of the brightest jewels in Disney's crown, Beauty and the Beast's 3D reissue takes nothing away and makes the film's brilliance even easier to appreciate; the movie is more beautiful and timeless than it ever was.

Beauty and the Beast is just as enchanting 20 years after its initial release.

The apex of an art form, a justly celebrated classic, and the best animated movie of any sort ever put on screen at any time.

The lines have begun to show in Belle's tale, which remains enjoyable but feels more like a quaint artifact than the masterpiece it once was declared to be.

Both TANGLED EVER AFTER and BEAUTY AND THE BEAST are sure to enthrall audiences everywhere, even if the 3D doesn't really add much of anything to this animated classic.

A serviceable version of a classic fairy tale minus that crucial touch of magic.

And it is a joy to revisit the timeless pleasures of traditional Disney storytelling, with no attempts to add sizzle from celebrity voice talent or radio-friendly pop songs.

3D doesn't downplay the inherent artistry of the effort, but it doesn't enhance anything outside of ticket prices.

Beauty and the Beast looks beautiful and is sure to entertain, but this experience is superfluous at best-it was already a three-dimensional story long before these new technics.

Better remembered than seen, Beauty and the Beast has been treated unkindly not just by the years that have passed since it was released to enormous acclaim in 1991, but by a faddish 3D conversion.

Homeowners' emphasis on energy efficiency grows | Pro Hands at ...

(ARA) ? Even in a volatile economy, homeowners are making home upkeep a priority. While the number of projects annually had been on the decline in recent years, a study from BuildFax, a resource for building, remodeling and repair information, found remodeling activity was up in 2011 over 2010. Additional data shows homeowners are opting to invest in what matters most with projects that benefit their wallets, personal comfort and the environment.

Know the facts

Before buying anything, shoppers are taking time to learn more about the products they put in their homes. For one in four consumers, knowing and understanding what makes up general household products is important. As options continue to increase, this attention to research is key to finding efficient products that offer maximum value. For instance, homeowners will find that a few newer home insulation products that help provide greater energy efficiency also boast new sustainable formulations. Owens Corning EcoTouch insulation is made from 99 percent natural materials, contains a minimum of 58 percent recycled content and is verified formaldehyde free.

Energy-efficient essentials

According to the 2010 Home Improvement Research Institute Trends Program Report, reducing household energy usage and bills through energy-efficient improvements continues to be the No. 1 reason homeowners make home improvements. That same report also indicated six out of 10 consumers need help identifying what they can do to be more environmentally conscious.

?Now is the right time to make efficiency improvements around the home because homeowners will see an immediate impact on their monthly utility bills, and will reap even greater benefits in the long term,? says Frank O?Brien-Bernini, chief sustainability officer at Owens Corning. ?According to the U.S. Department of Energy, buildings use more energy in the United States than either transportation or industry, accounting for the consumption of 40 percent of our nation?s energy resources. On a more granular level, the primary use of energy in a home is for heating and cooling. In many homes, excessive energy is wasted through poorly sealed and insulated attics, walls and ductwork ? all problems that can be solved by handy do-it-yourselfers or through experienced contractors.?

The Home Improvement Research Institute reports roughly one in three homeowners plans to purchase more energy-efficient doors, windows or HVAC systems in the coming year. Sealing all openings around doors and windows can help homeowners make the most of their investment. Air ducts should also be inspected to ensure they are clean, are free of leaks and holes and direct air to the right spaces.

Recycling 101

While recycled content is commonly focused on, recyclable materials are also important. Often with home improvement projects, old materials are thrown out and replaced with the new. What many homeowners may not know is that many building materials and appliances are recyclable. Recycling is a better solution for the environment, and may be less costly than taking material to a landfill.

?There are more recyclable materials on and in a home than you might first assume. Millions of tons of shingles torn off from roofs end up in our country?s landfills each year. Fortunately, the technology now exists for all those shingles to be recycled instead,? says O?Brien-Bernini. ?In 2009, Owens Corning Roofing and Asphalt, LLC formed an alliance with Heritage Environmental Services to create a Shingle Recycling Program with roofing contractors to make recycling convenient, cost-competitive and differentiating and have since recycled more than 90,000 tons of asphalt shingles.?

Homeowners looking for more information about shingle recycling and other types of recycling can turn to Earth911.com, with whom Owens Corning Roofing and Asphalt, LLC recently also formed an alliance. The site hosts the largest and most accurate recycling directory in North America and provides information about what materials can be recycled as well as lists of recyclers in local markets.

Runaway planets ejected from galaxy at insane speeds

New evidence suggests that planets are being tossed out of the Milky Way at speeds comparable to the speed of light.

Planets in tight orbits around stars that get ejected from our galaxy may actually themselves be tossed out of the Milky Way at blisteringly fast speeds of up to 30 million miles per hour, or a fraction of the speed of light, a new study finds.

"These warp-speed planets would be some of the fastest objects in the galaxy, aside from photons and?particles like cosmic rays," said Avi Loeb, an astrophysicist at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics in Cambridge, Mass. "In terms of large, solid objects, they would be the fastest. It would take them 10 seconds or so to cross the diameter of the Earth."

In 2005, astronomers found evidence of a runaway star that was flying out of the?Milky Way galaxy?at a speed of 1.5 million mph (2.4 million kph). This hypervelocity star was part of a double-star system that wandered too close to the supermassive black hole at the center of the galaxy.

The strong gravitational pull at the galactic center ripped the stars apart, sending one hurtling through space at high speeds, while capturing the other to stay in orbit around the massive black hole.

In the seven years since, 16 of these?hypervelocity stars?have been found, and Loeb and his colleagues began to wonder whether planets could also be sent tearing through space at such extreme velocities.

The researchers created simulations that examined what would happen if each star had at least one planet orbiting nearby. They found that up to 10 percent of planets tightly orbiting one of the stars could stay bound as the?star is flung outward. The other star that is captured by the black hole could also have its planet ripped away from it, and this planet would then be pitched into interstellar space at intensely fast speeds as well.

"We were trying to predict, if you have planets around each of the stars in the binary system, what fraction of the planets might go along with the hypervelocity star for the ride," Loeb told SPACE.com. "What we found is that some of them get expelled at high speeds, up to a few percent of the speed of light. Some of the planets get ripped apart from the host stars and get sent out at high speeds, and they also become hypervelocity planets this way."?

These planets would travel through space at unparalleled velocities, the researchers said.

(AP) ? Well, this looks familiar. Kentucky is back in a regional final. So is Baylor.

The top-seeded Wildcats moved another step closer to the only goal that matters in the Bluegrass State, shaking off a rather quiet night from freshman star Anthony Davis to put away stubborn Indiana 102-90 at the South Regional on Friday.

Next up for Kentucky: Those neon-clad Bears, who advanced to their second regional final in three years with a 75-70 victory over Xavier.

"We're just looking forward to go a little farther and make a little history," said Baylor's Quincy Acy, pointing toward Sunday's game at the Georgia Dome.

Kentucky coach John Calipari knows a national title is expected ? no, demanded ? of his team. Anything less would be considered a disappointment, at least among the Wildcat faithful.

Calipari would prefer his young team simply enjoy the ride.

"I want them to have fun," he said. "I don't want them to feel all this. It seems there's only one team that's not allowed to lose in this tournament, and that's us. It's not true, and I don't want them feeling all of that."

The Wildcats (35-2) sure looked as if they were having fun against Indiana, which got into a running contest with a team that was a little faster, a little stronger and just a little too good.

Kentucky finished with its most points since a 108-58 victory over Marist in the season opener.

"I like a game like that," Calipari said. "I can't stand a game in the 50s. Can't stand coaching it, can't stand watching it."

Michael Kidd-Gilchrist scored 24 points, Doron Lamb 21 and three of their teammates ? not Davis, mind you ? were in double figures. With that, the Wildcats dispatched the team that beat them back in early December.

"I feel like we did a pretty good job," said Kentucky's Darius Miller, who added 19 points. "So did Indiana. It was a very intense game. It was up and down for the most part. It was a fun game to be a part of, the way that both teams played."

Davis wasn't his usual dominating self after picking up two early fouls. He finished with nine points and 12 rebounds, so it was left to another of Kentucky's super freshmen to take the starring role.

Kidd-Gilchrist had a double-double, also snatching 10 rebounds.

"In the huddles during timeouts, Michael was the guy firing us up," teammate Twany Beckham said. "It showed with his play."

Marquis Teague chipped in with 14 points and Terrence Jones 12.

Christian Watford had 27 points to lead the Hoosiers (27-9), who beat Kentucky 73-72 before Christmas but ended a comeback season with a loss to their border rival. Still, there was nothing to ashamed of, coming up two victories shy of the Final Four after winning a total of 28 games the previous three seasons.

Clearly, Indiana has regained its usual place among the college basketball bluebloods under coach Tom Crean.

"I know when I first got here it was rough for this program," guard Victor Oladipo said. "We've been through a lot of ups and downs. Now that we've brought it all together, it's a bright future for this program."

But Big Blue is moving on this year.

"They're a really good team," Crean said. "They've got a lot of guys. They've got a guy coming off the bench (Miller) who's going to be a first-round draft pick."

Indiana's freshman star, Cody Zeller, had 20 points, while Oladipo provided a spark in the backcourt with 15 before fouling out. Kidd-Gilchrist just kept pounding the ball inside, drawing foul after foul on the Hoosiers, then knocking down the free throws. He went 10-for-10 at the line.

He wasn't the only one making free throws. Kentucky was a deadeye 35-of-37 at the line, compared to 13-of-17 for the Hoosiers.

"We were always playing uphill," Crean said. "We had some guys playing on fumes. That game took a lot out of everybody, no question about that."

Calipari shrugged off any suggestion that his team might be a little tired after such a run-and-gun game in the regional semifinals.

"When you're playing at this time of the year, you've got more energy than you need," the coach said. "This team is in great shape."

In Baylor's win, Quincy Acy picked up the slack for his roommate. The 6-foot-7 senior had a double-double on a lackluster night for sharpshooting Brady Heslip.

"I think I got a little of that magic from him," Acy said.

The Baylor post players were not double-teamed most of the game and Acy took advantage of it to the tune of 20 points and 15 rebounds. Perry Jones III added 14 points.

Heslip, coming off his career-high 27 points on nine 3-pointers in Baylor's second-round win over Colorado, made only one against Xavier. He finished with 11 points. But Acy had his back, throwing down several dunks and adding a few jump shots that surprised Xavier coach Chris Mack.

"He's a cage-rattler," Mack said. "I never saw him hit a 15-foot jump shot, and he does that in the first four minutes of the game."

In the final minute, Acy knocked down a couple of free throws to help seal the victory, again leaving the Bears (30-7) on the brink of the Final Four. They also won three NCAA tournament games in 2010 before losing to eventual national champion Duke.

Wearing bright neon-green uniforms, the Bears led by 18 points less than 8 minutes into the game. Xavier (23-13) played from behind all night, but never quit. Tu Holloway led the Musketeers with 22 points, but they were hurt by poor shooting, especially from beyond the arc.

Xavier went 0-for-11 on 3-pointers before Justin Martin ended the drought with 2 minutes remaining.

"Unfortunately," Xavier's Kenny Frease said, "when you get down that much to a team like Baylor, a lot of times you're not going to be able to come out of it, and today we couldn't."

'Bird-Man' YouTube Video Confirmed to Be a Hoax

Turns out humans still can't fly, despite the images in a popular YouTube video.

Floris Kaayk, a Dutchman, posted a video titled "Human Birdwings" March 19. In it, he has two large wings attached to his arms. As he takes a running start and flaps his arms, he lifts himself off the ground to look like, well, a flying bird. He soars through the sky and then lands safely on the ground.

Kaayk, or Jarno Smeets, as he nicknamed himself, has become an Internet sensation known as the flying bird-man. The video has gotten more than 4 million views since it posted.

Except, it turns out, he fooled us all.

Or at least some of us. Many started to speculate that Kaayk wasn't actually flying, pointing out inconsistencies in the video. For instance, in one shot there is a spot on the wing and in another there isn't. Others did the math; the wings wouldn't provide the force to lift an 160-pound man off the ground.

And, then, there was the marketing aspect of it. In a making-of-the-wings video, he mentioned that he used a series of products to make the flight happen: two Wii remotes, an HTC Wildfire Android phone, and a GoPro camera to film it all.

Kaayk finally admitted that it was all a hoax on Dutch television?and on his own blog. He confessed that he is a filmmaker and animator and this has been a "fictional online storytelling project."

"'Human Birdwings' was an online adventure and invention story in which fictional character Jarno Smeets developed wings in a do-it-yourself manner," he says.

And there you have it: We'll just have to wait a bit longer to see humans soar into the sky for real.

More Americans uneasy with political use of religion

Ted S. Warren / AP

Mitt Romney, right, bows his head in prayer as he stands on stage with local elected officials during a campaign rally on Feb. 3 in Elko, Nev. Nearly six in 10 Republican and Republican-leaning voters who favor Romney for the GOP presidential nomination say churches should keep out of political matters.

By James Eng, msnbc.com

In an election campaign season in which issues such as birth control and gay marriage have made headlines,?a growing number of Americans think political leaders are talking too much religion, according to a new national survey.

The survey released Wednesday by the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press and the Pew Research Center?s Forum on Religion & Public Life finds signs of uneasiness over the mixing of religion and politics.

Nearly four in 10 Americans (38 percent) say there has been too much expression of religious faith and prayer from political leaders -- an all-time high since the Pew Research Center began asking the question more than a decade ago. Thirty percent say there has been too little.

Most Americans (54 percent) continue to say that churches and other houses of worship should keep out of politics. It?s the third consecutive poll conducted over the past four years in which more people have said churches and other houses of worship should keep out of politics than said they should express their views on social and political topics, according to Pew. That's also an about-face from 2006, when 51 percent of Americans believed churches should speak out and 46 percent said they should keep quiet.

The view that there is too much expression of religious faith by politicians remains far more widespread among Democrats than Republicans, and there are also divisions within the GOP primary electorate.

Fifty-seven percent of Republican and Republican-leaning voters who favor Mitt Romney (a Mormon) for the presidential nomination say churches should keep out of political matters. By contrast, 60 percent of GOP voters who support Rick Santorum (a devout Catholic) say that churches and other houses of worship should express their views on social and political questions.

And while more than half (55 percent) of Santorum?s supporters say there is too little expression of religious faith and prayer by political leaders, just one in four (24 percent) of Romney?s backers agree.

Santorum has worked hard on the campaign trail to court conservative Christian voters, and the former Pennsylvania senator has talked openly about the journey of his faith in?visits to evangelical churches.

Kimberly Conger, a political science instructor at Colorado State University who has studied the intersection of religion and politics, says the latest Pew findings are not surprising.

?Religious people's opinions on the relationship between religion and politics seem to be driven by their political identity more than their religious one.? These results bear that out,? she said by email to msnbc.com.

?Republicans are less likely to think there is too much religious talk by political leaders, and Republicans are hearing more such talk than Democrats.? It is also unsurprising that there has been a slight uptick in the overall number of people uncomfortable with religious talk since the Republican primary has had some significant religious overtones.?

As to whether politicians should steer clear of religion on the campaign trail, Conger says it depends.

?It's clear from the breakdown of religious and political groups that Rick Santorum ought to keep talking about religion as long as he's fighting for the Republican nomination. But if he were to win the nomination, he'd have to start appealing to independents, a key voting group that's uncomfortable with candidates' religious talk,? she says.

?They key challenge in the general election will be for Republicans to broaden their appeal by toning down religious talk. But the data suggest that Democrats face a similar if less intense challenge in broadening their appeal by appearing more welcoming to religious beliefs. Both sides will have a fine line to walk.?

The Pew telephone survey was conducted March 7-11 among 1,503 adults. You can read the full results here.

Just Because It Is Old Doesn't Make It a Classic Car in the Collector's ...

n many states, like California, there are rules in the various motor vehicle code for those people who own the old vintage cars. That is because they can not always be able to the requirements of the smog from cars in those days had to be no new sophisticated control systems and environmental justice. Since there are these laws of classic cars, many people who are older vehicles longer they stay, because they are able to bypass certain restrictions, regulations and rules for the operation of a motor vehicle to have. Okay, so I want to talk about it for a second if I may.

As a classic car enthusiast, I often read the classifieds to see if someone can sell something that my thing. Oddly enough, always, I see the word ?classic? or phrases, vintage or classic car. However, not only because something is old, not that it?s a classic, and there are many old cars that people do not, perhaps because there were so many to build, and even in their own day, they have nothing at home to Write on the point were they assign A to B Basic Car Point

Let me give you an example. After Chrysler rescued by the government of the United States, they began the construction of this ?K-cars? and really, with the engine running on the side, and a giant rubber band running from the car, she had a nightmare, so I?m really surprised all these cars are running. You remind me so much as far as car maintenance to be very similar to those that were old Yugo also known to throw a car. They go until they break, and then throw them away because you can not get parts, and they are not worth fixing anyway. You remember the old quip, Yugo ? Yah, ?you? Nowhere Fast ?!

Okay, back to the observation car classic. In our local paper someone advertising one of these former ?K-cars? was a small station wagon, and to read their ad, ?perfect project classic car, light body damage, old classics Classic Chrysler K-Car,? and I said to myself to go? Someone is really trying to pass off as a classic car just because it is old now? I hate the news to the gentleman who tried to sell this car to break, but it was the day that junk was succeeded, why should you recover?

Either this man is totally ignorant of classic cars, or trying to get a fast, the move to a naive buyer. In fact, I would say that he spent most of the ad and the car is worth. If you pay the toll to be scrapped, you probably do not even get your money back for recycling. In fact, I hope you note please keep all of it.
