Part of the genome of two hunter-gatherers from 7,000 years ago

ScienceDaily (June 28, 2012) ? A team of scientists, led by researcher Carles Lalueza-Fox from CSIC (Spanish National Research Council), has recovered -- for the first time in history -- part of the genome of two individuals who were alive in the Mesolithic Period, 7000 years ago.? The remains were found at La Bra?a-Arintero site, located at Valdelugueros (Le?n), Spain.

The study results, published in the Current Biology, indicate that current Iberian populations do not come from these recently discovered humans.

The Mesolithic Period, framed between the Paleolithic and Neolithic Periods, is characterized by the advent of agriculture, coming from the Middle East.

The genome found is the oldest from Prehistory, 1,700 years before ?tzi, the Iceman lived.

Researchers have also recovered the complete mitochondrial DNA of one of these individuals, through which they could determine that European populations from Mesolithic Period were very uniform genetically. Carles Lauleza-Fox, from the Institute of Evolutionary Biology (CSIC-UPF), states: "These hunters-gatherers shared nomadic habits and had a common origin. Despite their geographical distance, individuals from the regions corresponding to the current England, Germany, Lithuania, Poland, and Spain, shared the same mitochondrial lineage."

The DNA data, which represent the 1.34% and the 0.5% of both individuals total genome, show that they are not directly connected to current populations of the Iberian Peninsula. Iberians from the Mesolithic Period were closer to current populations of northern Europe, who could have assimilated part of the genetic legacy of these hunters-gatherers.

La Bra?a-Arintero site was discovered in 2006 by chance. Juan Manuel Vidal Encinas, archeologist from the Regional Government of Castilla y Le?n, who has also participated in the study, has excavated it at a later date. The cave, due to its location in a cold and mountainous area, is a suitable place for the good preservation of the DNA of these two individuals, found inside it.

The oldest remains from Prehistory

CSIC researcher emphasizes: "So far, we only had one genome of the European Prehistory, that of ?tzi [also known as the Iceman], from the Neolithic Period. His mummy, belonging to a man who lived 5300 years ago, was found in the Tyrolean Alps, on the border between Austria and Italy. La Bra?a-Arintero site offers a unique opportunity to obtain pre-Neolithic genomes."

According to Lalueza-Fox, this is only a first result since the intention of the team is to recover the complete DNA of these individuals, and to compare it with that of the modern humans. CSIC researcher discloses: "The arrival of the Neolithic Period brought about a replacement of populations, and could cause genetic changes in genes associated with new infectious diseases, and in metabolic genes linked to changes in diet. Therefore, all the information extracted from this genome will be absolutely important."

Sony Xperia P review

Android Central

Can build quality and multimedia chops redeem a phone lacking the latest version of Android? Find out as we take a closer look at the Sony Xperia P.

The fact that we’re starting to see dual-core phones at entry-level price points is a testament to the tremendous pace at which smartphone technology is advancing. Last year this kind of multiprocessing horsepower was reserved for only the most expensive handsets, but as we cross over into the second half of 2012, we’re increasingly seeing these chips in mid-range and low-end phones too.

One such device is the Sony Xperia P. Sitting between the Xperia S and Xperia U in terms of specs and price, the Xperia P is the middle child in Sony’s Xperia NXT series. It aims to differentiate itself with its own unique take on the Xperia NXT “transparent element” design, using an aluminum chassis. It also offers few extra whistles and bells, including NFC support and an 8MP EXMOR R camera.

But there’s a “but” coming, and if you’ve read our Xperia S and Xperia U reviews, you’ll probably have correctly guessed that the Xperia P ships with the 18-month-old Android 2.3 Gingerbread, as opposed to the newer 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. So is this a deal-breaker, or does Sony offer enough added value in other areas for this to be overlooked until the update arrives? Find out below, in our full review of the Sony Xperia P.

Pets and More Pets ? Horse Vitamin And A Few Of The Types Of ...

A great horse vitamin is perfect for your horse especially to battle off undesired viruses as well as parasites. All mounts have internal parasites. Ninety percent of all the colic cases might be linked to circulatory damage brought on by the switching larvae of Strongylus vulgaris (blood worms). 50 percent of the deaths in mounts may be related to internal parasites. Internal parasites have modified themselves to the internal environment of their host animal and have come to be host-specific. Horse parasites can simply occur in horses and cattle parasites only in cattle. In case a cow takes the eggs or larvae of the horse parasite (or the other way around), the life cycle of the parasite is destroyed. This can be a component in creating parasite control applications.

Bots (gasterophilus) are the larvae of botflies. The yellow eggs are set about the hairs on the front part of the horse, within just reach of his tongue. The eggs hatch in 10-14 days and also the horse will lick them off his coat and transfer these to his mouth, where the larvae burrow into the mucous membranes of the lips as well as gums. There they continue to be for a short increasing period and they pass on to the intestine where they attach to the stomach wall. They stay there for pretty much a year just before passing out with the faeces to pupate inside the soil. Adult botflies then appear coming from the pupal cases in 3 to 9 weeks, based on the temperature.

It is often thought that tapeworms don?t cause a lot of injury to horses, but just lately they are becoming looked over more closely. Tapeworms adhere to the intestine at the junction between the little intestine and cecum. This can be already a possible section of impaction within the horse, which is considered by some that tapeworm pests compounds the problem. Regrettably tapeworm eggs do not show up on routine fecal exams, therefore if normal deworming isn?t resulting in thriftiness, think about providing pyrantel at 2-3 times the normal dose; this will eliminate any tapeworms.

Administration applications which disrupt the life cycle of the parasite just before invasion occurs would be the answer to prosperous control. Keeping stall areas thoroughly clean is vital. Manure must be removed and put into a compost pile or distributed on cropland or pastures not being grazed by mounts. The larvae in composted manure will be ruined if sufficient heat is built up. Distributing manure by hauling pastures will reduce likelihood of infective larvae if the local weather provides for drying of manure. Substitute grazing with ruminants and pasture rotation techniques will help with disrupting the parasite life cycle. Grazing ruminants in rotation with horses will reduce parasite infestation since most internal parasites are host specific. Pasture rotation may also help by reducing chance of overgrazing, thus minimizing ingestion of unwanted organisms.

An excellent horse vitamin is perfect for your horse?s health. Sensible horse owners worm their equine, seasonally (4 times a year) and on well handled pasture substantial worm burdens are not an issue. A choice of wormer is often produced on the basis of advertising or cost. No real follow up is taken up to decide if the wormer was successful, the owner trusts the merchandise was effective. Usually the wormer used, is one to which the worms have become resistant. Therefore, you will need to not only worm your horse but to adhere to deworming using a faecal egg worm count, in Spring as well as Winter.

Hallucinating Robots Make the Best Interior Designers [Video]

We humans are already kind of afraid of robots, so here's a good idea: what if we make them trip balls and hallucinate imaginary people everywhere? Seems like it would drive them to madness and make them turn on us even faster, but researchers at Cornell University's Robot Learning Lab think it will make them better at their jobs. More »

Like father, like son. Charlie Sheen could follow pops Martin into the White House in an upcoming big screen role as the president in director Robert Rodriguez's sequel to his "Grindhouse" action pic, "Machete."

Rodriguez announced the casting on Thursday in a tweet that read, "I just cast Charlie Sheen in #machetekills as the President of the United States! Who better? More soon..." Sheen retweeted the message, which also included a photo of the "Anger Management" actor leaning his arm on Rodriguez's shoulder. A spokesperson for Sheen confirmed that negotiations are under way to have him join the film, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

If Sheen ends up in the movie, he'll be the second member of his family to take on the role of command-in-chief, following in the footsteps of Martin, who played the fictional President Josiah Bartlet for seven seasons on Aaron Sorkin's "The West Wing."

The original over-the-top 2010 revenge fantasy starring tattooed badass vigilante Danny Trejo began life as a fake B-movie trailer in Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino's 2007 throwback exploitation flick "Grindhouse." It featured a galaxy of stars, including Robert De Niro, Jessica Alba, Michelle Rodriguez, Cheech Marin and Lindsay Lohan.

The sequel will again feature Trejo, Alba and Rodriguez, along with Mel Gibson, Demian Bichir, Amber Heard, Sofia Vergara and Zoe Saldana. Rodriguez announced in a tweet on June 12 that principal photography on the film had begun. The second chapter of a planned trilogy, due out in 2013, finds Machete being recruited by the U.S. government to stop a cartel leader and an arms dealer who have deployed a weapon in space.

Crazy Jungle Bird Man Interrupts U.S. Open Trophy Presentation, Webb Simpson Interview

A crazy, self-proclaimed Jungle Bird Man crashed the U.S. Open trophy presentation last night after unheralded Webb Simpson won golf's prestigious title.

Somehow, this odd UK Bird crept past security and stole the show, cutting off NBC's Bob Costas on live TV and doing his bird call before being hauled away.

The Bird admits he had a few beers beforehand ... big surprise.

Jungle Bird Man - see his official Facebook page - says it was a premeditated mission to raise awareness about global deforestation. Makes sense.

"I want people thinking about saving trees," he said.

Hilariously, after security handed the interview crasher over to the San Francisco police, he and the officers were making bird noises at the station together.

They eventually cut him loose because U.S. Open officials did not want to press charges. Classy move on their part. Next on the hit list for the avian wonder?

"The House of Commons," he says, "is the next port of call."

Better beef up security over there fellas.

UN observers in Syria suspend operations

BEIRUT (AP) ? U.N. observers in Syria suspended their activities and patrols Saturday because of escalating violence in the country, the head of the mission said, the strongest sign yet that an international peace plan for Syria is disintegrating.

Maj. Gen. Robert Mood said rising bloodshed over the past 10 days was posing significant risks to the lives of the 300 unarmed observers in the country, and was impeding their ability to carry out their mandate.

The observers were sent to the country after international envoy Kofi Annan brokered a peace plan that included a cease-fire that was supposed to take effect on April 12. But both sides have continued to stage daily attacks and the observers themselves have been caught up in the violence on several occasions.

The U.N. observers have been the only working part of Annan's the plan, which the international community sees as its only hope to stop the bloodshed. They were initially sent to monitor compliance with the cease-fire but ultimately became the most independent witnesses the carnage between government and rebel forces that have largely ignored the truce.

The Syrian government, intent on wresting back control of rebel-held areas, launched a fierce offensive in recent days to recover territories in several locations, shelling heavily populated districts and using attack helicopters over towns and cities.

U.N. officials have said that the opposition, in turn, is increasingly coordinating attacks against government forces and civilian infrastructure.

On Saturday, government troops kept up their relentless shelling of rebel-held districts in the central city of Homs, killing at least five. Another 12, including a man, his wife and child, were killed in overnight shelling of suburbs of the capital Damascus.

"U.N. observers will not be conducting patrols and will stay in their locations until further notice," Mood said in a statement Saturday. He said the observers will not leave the country, and the suspension will be reviewed on a daily basis.

"Operations will resume when we see the situation fit for us to carry out our mandated activities," he said.

The suspension signals the unraveling of Annan's plan as the conflict that began in March 2011 with peaceful protests challenging the regime spirals closer toward civil war. Activists say some 14,000 people have been killed in the conflict.

Western powers have stuck by the plan, in part because there are no other options on the table. There is little appetite for the military intervention that helped oust Libya's Moammar Gadhafi, and several rounds of sanctions have failed to stop the bloodshed.

The U.S. was now consulting with allies about "next steps toward a Syrian-led political transition," National Security Council spokesman Tommy Vietor said, adding that "the sooner this transition takes place, the greater the chance of averting a lengthy and bloody sectarian civil war."

Vietor was referring to the two U.N. resolutions that detailed Anan's peace plan and called for political dialogue between the government and the country's fractured opposition. He did not give further details in his statement.

Mood did not elaborate or say whether the monitors might eventually leave, but on Friday, he said states that provide the observers were concerned that the risk is approaching an unacceptable level ? suggesting the violence could prompt the observers to pull out of the country at some point.

"The lack of willingness by the parties to seek a peaceful transition, and the push towards advancing military positions is increasing the losses on both sides," Mood said. "It is also posing significant risks to our observers."

The Syrian government said it conveyed to Mood its "understanding" of the decision taken and blamed the rebels, whom it refers to as "terrorists" for the escalation.

The Foreign Ministry said in a statement that it had "clarified to the leadership of the U.N. mission that armed terrorist groups have conducted, since the signing of the Annan plan, an increase in criminal operations that have targeted, many times, the observers, and threatened their lives."

The opposition, for its part, has blamed the regime for the attacks near the observers.

Last week, an observers' convoy was blocked and attacked with stones, metal rods and gunfire by an angry crowd as it was trying to head to the town of Haffa in the coastal Latakia region, where troops had been battling rebels for a week.

The observers only managed to enter once government troops had seized the area back from the rebels.

On May 15, a roadside bomb damaged observers' cars shortly after they met with Syrian rebels in the northern town of Khan Sheikoun. A week earlier, a roadside bomb struck a Syrian military truck in the south of the country just seconds after Mood drove by in a convoy.

Still, their presence has been a crucial source of independent information, particularly as Syria bars journalists from reporting freely in the country.

Despite fears that violence could significantly worsen without the their presence on the ground, prominent activist Rami Abdul-Rahman of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said it was better for the U.N. teams to leave.

"We haven't seen anything beneficial from them. If they are independent ? so what?" he said. "A lot of crimes happened in Syria, and they couldn't do anything."

He called on the international community to more actively intervene to halt the bloodshed in Syria.

"The situation can't get worse than this: are we afraid that it's a civil war? Well it is a civil war. The situation is difficult. The international community's silence on Syria is working to destroy Syria," Abdul-Rahman said.

In the Damascus suburb of Douma, where overnight shelling killed 12 people, activist Mohammed Douma said the presence of observers had been irrelevant anyway, adding that they hadn't visited Douma, a hotspot, in a week.

"But anyway, all they can do is record what they see, they cannot help," he said.

Two years ago, an animated "threequel" topped the box office against new movies from Tom Cruise and Adam Sandler. If industry-watcher prognostication proves correct, it'll be déjá vu this weekend as another big-budget cartoon trounces the two stars.

Experts predict last weekend's #1 movie, "Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted," is likely to beat back new competition from Cruise and his singing compatriots in "Rock of Ages" as well as "That's My Boy," which pairs Sandler with fellow "Saturday Night Live" veteran Andy Samberg.

"I think this frame will shape up just like the weekend of June 25 to June 27, 2010," BoxOfficeGuru.com editor Gitesh Pandya told MTV News. That summer, "Toy Story 3" remained #1 for a second consecutive weekend against Cruise's "Knight and Day" and Sandler's "Grown Ups."

Edward Douglas, who writes "The Weekend Warrior" for ComingSoon.net, agreed, predicting between $30 and $35 million for "Madagascar 3." Movie City News Editor David Poland didn't see a $30 million opening as out of the realm of possibility for Sandler, but countered that "Madagascar" certainly wouldn't drop any lower than that. " 'Rock of Ages' has no chance [at being #1]," he added.

Both of the weekend's big new movies failed to impress critics. "Rock of Ages" had a "rotten" 49 percent critical average on Rotten Tomatoes at press time. "That's My Boy" stood at 15 percent, which is on par with other Sandler comedies ("Grown Ups" had just 10 percent).

" 'Rock of Ages' will get hurt by bad reviews more than 'That's My Boy,' " Pandya predicted. "One of the favorite exercises of film critics is to think of new ways to rip apart the latest Sandler film, so audiences would be shocked by anything other than bad reviews."

Douglas agreed: "It will have less of an effect on 'That's My Boy.' Not only because both Sandler and Samberg have their own dedicated fans, but also because the movie's going to get a significant bump on Father's Day when fathers and their teen and older sons make this their first choice."

"Rock of Ages" arrives armed with a slew of recognizable hair-metal songs from the '80s written by platinum-plus acts like Def Leppard and Poison, as well as built-in support from the fans who saw the show on Broadway. And while the film boasts a large ensemble that includes Malin Akerman and this year's MTV Movie Awards host, Russell Brand, shirtless shots of Cruise as rocker Stacee Jaxx certainly played a big part in marketing.

Pandya said Cruise's star power, the built-in Broadway buzz and the songs are all equal draws for the film, but Poland disagreed: "Broadway buzz, with very few exceptions, is good for less than $20 million total, in my opinion," he said. "And who is coming to hear the songs sung by this cast?"

Douglas noted, "Even with bad reviews, most of the critics have been impressed with Cruise in the role of Stacee Jaxx. It's just not enough to overcome other problems.

"The Broadway show certainly has its fanbase, as do the actual songs, but I believe that's a fairly small group that may go out to see it on Friday. And I really don't think the fans of the Broadway show are going to like the movie at all. It's just too different."

"Knight and Day" was one of only a handful of mainstream-targeted Cruise movies to fail to crack $100 million. "Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol," however, took in nearly $210 million. So, what will the success or failure of "Rock of Ages" mean for his career?

"Honestly? Absolutely nothing," Douglas reasoned. "I don't think it's only being sold based on Cruise, and he's a supporting character at best rather than the lead. He has already increased his Q-rating with the success of 'Ghost Protocol,' so there's very little that can actually hurt him. While Cruise will contribute to the film opening well, I don't think he'll get blamed if it doesn't have significant legs."

Pandya explained, "Cruise has shrewdly put himself into a win-win situation with 'Rock of Ages,' because if the film does well, he can take some credit due to his buzz-worthy role. However, if it tanks, then it's not his fault since it's an ensemble with a big cast and not resting on his shoulders. There's only upside here for him, so I think this is a great move for his career."

As for Sandler's career, "Jack and Jill" opened with $25 million last year, and like "Knight and Day," finished around $75 million. "Just Go With It" took in $104 million earlier in 2011. In 2009, the more highbrow dramedy "Funny People" opened with $22 million.

"I see 'That's My Boy' opening closer to 'Funny People' and not near his bigger PG-13 hits, which had more appeal," Pandya said. "There's no major female star here, plus the R rating may cut down on some of his younger teen business."

Poland pointed out that "Jack and Jill" was the first broad Adam Sandler comedy (i.e. not a "Punch Drunk Love"-type movie) that didn't break $100 million domestically since "Little Nicky" collected just $40 million in 2000.

"It's definitely not a 'Little Nicky' because Sandler isn't really playing a character as he did in that," Douglas said. "He's just playing an exaggerated version of his 'Big Daddy' character in some ways. And it's a much bigger deal that he's paired with Andy Samberg, who is pretty hot right now. In some ways, it should have a similar effect as when Sandler did 'Grown Ups' because the combined star power will make up for any misgivings people will have about seeing an Adam Sandler movie.

"I'd say this is more in the range of 'Just Go With It' or 'I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry,' " he added.

The last big movie to do battle with "Madagascar" was "Prometheus," which settled for a nevertheless-strong #2 opening. While the brainy sci-fi movie presented audiences with juicy questions about its story (many handily answered by co-writer David Lindelof in a series of emails with MTV News' own Josh Horowitz), the remaining head scratcher for box-office watchers is how much it will decline in its second weekend. Despite a Friday-to-Saturday drop last weekend, though, predictions were optimistic.

"As people seem to be forgetting, there were a number of huge sports events on Saturday, which probably cut into its male-driven business," Douglas noted. "While there may be a large Friday-to-Friday drop this week, the Saturday-to-Saturday won't be so bad, and I can see it actually doing decent business for Father's Day, so I don't see a catastrophic second-weekend drop — definitely sub-55 percent."

Poland predicted, "I see a drop in the mid-40s [percentage wise], as it is still the must-see studio movie for adults."

As for the biggest box-office story of the year thus far, "Marvel's The Avengers" should pass $600 million domestically this summer. "I'd say by the end of July it should be there, if not sooner," Douglas said.

"Disney will jump through every hoop to be able to say it topped 'Titanic' domestically, even if it means a re-release," Poland explained. "But it probably won't be necessary. Looks to me like they can get to $600 million before 'The Amazing Spider-Man' lands in theaters."

It's not all about the big-budget summer flicks, of course. This weekend's smaller releases include "Your Sister's Sister" with Emily Blunt, "The Woman in the Fifth" with Ethan Hawke and Kristin Scott Thomas, and hip-hop documentary "The Art of Rap."

Kentucky Derby entries to be rated on point system

(AP) ? Churchill Downs is revamping the eligibility system that sets the field for the Kentucky Derby.

Track President Kevin Flanery said Thursday the Louisville track is scrapping the system of using graded stakes earnings to determine Derby starters. It's being replaced by a point system that Flanery said will be more understandable for fans and horsemen.

"What we're hoping to do is create a compelling story, and an easy to follow understandable path to the Kentucky Derby," he said.

The new system will remove some of the guesswork, he said. The 36 races that are part of the point system include key races during the 2-year-old season leading into the 3-year-old season.

The Derby has used the graded stakes system since 1986 to determine which horses get into the race, which is run on the first Saturday in May.

Churchill Downs is calling the new point system "Road to the Kentucky Derby."

"We're implementing a more fan-friendly, cohesive and simplified system that should create compelling drama and appeal to a wider customer base," Churchill Downs CEO Bob Evans said in a statement.

Churchill Downs said it conducted a poll of more than 300 sports fans nationwide that found that 83 percent did not understand how a thoroughbred qualifies for the Derby.

Jon Eig: Tiger Woods and the Deathly Hallows

Lord Voldemort succeeded in killing Albus Dumbledore. Tiger Woods chipped in on 16 at the Memorial. And two worlds shook.

For those unfamiliar with magic and muggles, Lord Voldemort was the evil wizard whose rise to unparalleled dominance in the wizarding world was thwarted by the innocent babe Harry Potter. J. K. Rowling's game-changing Harry Potter series chronicles Voldemort's seven year journey to regather his former potency and regain his preeminence.

For those unfamiliar with mashies and flop shots, Tiger Woods was on the verge of being the greatest golfer of all time. Multiple babes of varying degrees of innocence derailed him.

Both men inspired great passion in their fans and great fear in their enemies. So, even after the fall, there was always the whispering: "He's ba-ack."

Voldemort had a few abortive attempts to return to glory along the way, much like Tiger had Arnie's Invitational win in March. But after that chip at Muirfield Village, a lot more people are believing this could be the real thing. And what better venue could we hope for than San Francisco's Olympic Club. Will we see Tiger claim his first major in four years at the "Graveyard of Champions?"

In order for him to win, Tiger would do well to learn from Voldemort (minus the obsession with the innocent babe issue that ultimately undid him.) The "deathly hallows" were three magical objects the Dark Lord hoped to acquire in his attempt to regain his power:

The Cloak of Invisibility: The job of shielding the most visible of all athletes used to fall mainly on Steve Williams, Tiger's long-time caddie. The pair split up after the downfall and now it is Joe LaCava's task to keep the golfer focused. Of course, it is also Tiger's task, and staying invisible is never bad advice for a man in Tiger's position.

The Resurrection Stone: This allows some form of communion with the dead. Though it may be overly simple to say that Tiger's world spun out of control after his father Earl's death in 2006, it would no doubt be a great aid for Tiger to be able to spiritually return to a time when his father was there to advise and counsel. By all accounts, Earl Woods was a man of great character who exercised enormous influence over his son.

The Elder Wand: The unbeatable wand. Tiger needs his putter. When he was at the top, he never seemed to miss a meaningful putt. This more than anything else engendered confidence and inspired fear.

Are you rooting for him? I am. Harry Potter, according the epilogue of the final book, had a pretty sweet life after finally disposing of Voldemort. But nobody's writing books about that, are they? I'm not talking about fan fiction. The most successful series in publishing in our lifetime came to end when the guy who tried to conquer the world was dispatched. I'm not ready for this era to end in golf just yet. They'll be time for the Ricky's and Rory's and Ryo's to write their own chapters. Come on Tiger. Win just one more for the Dark Lord.

PFT: Skipping minicamps more expensive now

103294271_crop_650x440Getty Images

Next month, The Dark Knight Rises.? Until then, we?ll have to settle for a real-life reunion of football?s Batman and Robin.

Terrell Owens and Chad Ochocinco, both of whom currently are waiting for a bat signal to shine in one of the various NFL cities, worked out recently in South Beach.? After they did their thing, Owens provided a two-minute ?exclusive? interview to OCNN.

(Chad was nowhere to be seen or heard.? Which means he?s smart enough to realize that hitching his wagon once again to T.O. means that Chad?s wagon will end up careening off a cliff.)

Some of Owens? monologue couldn?t understood, due to the fact that hurricane-force winds were blowing directly into the microphone.? Here?s what we were able to discern.

?Everybody?s hatin? right now,? Owens said.? ?It?s all good.? At the end of the day, I?m gonna be what I be.? You know what I mean?? I?m gonna be who I be.? I may be swept off right now, but, hey, myself, personally, I got all the faith in God.? Everything happens for a reason.? Everybody that doubts me, everybody that thinks this and that.? Hey, think what you want to think.? I know the truth.? There?s always three sides to a story.? Their side, my side, and it?s always true.

?I?m gonna still keep working. . . .? Eventually, I?m coming back. . . .? Everybody?s talking about what happened five, seven years ago.? It is what it is.? See my heart, not my past.?

For a guy who held a workout last October that no team attended, and in whom no team has shown a sliver of interest despite the fact that every team currently has 90 roster spots, it would be wise to project slightly more (or, you know, any) humility if he truly hopes to return to the NFL.

At one point, Owens chalks up his past locker-room issues to being ?young, immature.?? Based on his latest interview, the only real difference is that he?s no longer young.

The Golf Principle

You and I have some natural ability to play golf and so does just about anyone who decides to play golf. Of course we are all different in our ways, our lives and our outlooks.

And it's the reason why you'll see so many different levels of ability, different styles and different approaches to the game.

But despite all the differences, one thing is the same regardless of your golf ability, the most asked question in golf:

How do I improve my game? Or how can I become a better player?

Easy to ask but impossible to answer?

Until now

The reason golf seems complicated and difficult to nearly everyone who plays the game is much simpler than most people will believe.

We have made it complicated and difficult, and we don't need to.

In learning any skill, art or science the most critical two things to learn are the Principle and secondly the Method.

In mathematics all shapes are made in accordance with the principles of geometry, in aircraft design, all aircraft obey the principles of flight; in art all colours come from the 3 primary colours.

A principle is so important, it's all important. Why? Because it is true and consistent in all cases, other statements may come from it, but the principle will always be true.

A classic example used in philosophy is "All men are mortal; Socrates is a man; Socrates is mortal" the last statement that Socrates is mortal must be true because of the first two statements.

How about this statement "The purpose of golf is to get the ball in the hole in the fewest shots, Paul plays golf, Paul's purpose is to get the ball in the hole in the fewest shots"

Pretty straight forward, pretty simple.

Notice it doesn't say Paul's purpose is to hit the ball 300 yards or Paul's purpose is to buy new equipment every time something new is marketed, and it doesn't say Paul's purpose is to have a picture perfect, highly technical golf swing.

We all know players who have all the gear, spend hours talking techniques and obsess over distance off the tee. But are they shooting the lowest scores? No usually, they have failed to understand the principle of golf and the methods needed to fulfill the principle.

Do you know any players who seem to shoot low in spite of older equipment, not being technical about every aspect of the game, or not being prodigiously long? Of course you do, we all have seen players like this, and here's why?

They understand the principle of golf and have mastered the methods needed to play and they honour that principle.

To make this work for you start saying to yourself over and over

"The purpose of golf is to get the ball in the hole in the fewest shots"

When you are working on your methods, putting, chipping, sand play, pitching, Irons and woods make sure you constantly remind yourself about the purpose of golf.

This way you can see what works and what doesn't.

And what works is whatever gets the ball in the hole.

No longer will you be concerned about things that don't matter - you'll be focused only on things that'll make a difference.

Remember the First Principle of Golf is "to get the ball in the hole in the fewest shots"

If anything you do, say or think obeys that principle then it's true, if it doesn't then it is false and must be rejected.
