NEW ORLEANS ? Former Archbishop Philip Matthew Hannan, who gave the eulogy for President John F. Kennedy and later served more than three decades as the head of the New Orleans Roman Catholic Archdiocese, died Thursday. He was 98.

Hannan was the 11th archbishop in New Orleans history and one of the most active. When he turned 75 and had to retire as archbishop, he became president of WLAE-TV, the public television station he founded.

Assigned to New Orleans in 1965 from Washington, where he had been auxiliary bishop since 1956, he found the old St. Louis Cathedral, in the middle of an area of the French Quarter a-swarm with tourists, street performers, tarot card readers and musicians, had a unique pleasure for a churchman.

"This is the only city where an archbishop can walk into his cathedral while a band outside in Jackson Square is playing `When the Saints Go Marching In,'" he said.

When Kennedy was assassinated Nov. 22, 1961, his widow, Jacqueline, asked Hannan to deliver the eulogy because of his close personal relationship with the president, which dated back to the 1940s. Then-Father Hannan became friends with Kennedy by smoothing over a misunderstanding that Kennedy had with a Jesuit priest.

He also officiated at a quiet reburial of two Kennedy infants in 1964 so their bodies could be near their father's in Arlington National Cemetery.

"We did it in the middle of the night, and so quietly that we caught everyone off guard," Hannan said in 1965. "Not even the Army chauffeurs knew where they were going when they picked us up."

In 1968, Hannan returned to Washington from New Orleans to give the graveside eulogy for Sen. Robert. F. Kennedy.

When Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis died of cancer in 1994, Hannan was again at Arlington to preside at a brief service preceding her burial.

As New Orleans' archbishop, Hannan combined conservative politics and service to the poor.

Highlights of his tenure as archbishop included the 1987 visit of Pope John Paul II ? a visit that Hannan began angling for in 1984. After a while, said Hannan, "Every time he saw me, he'd simply say, `New Orleans! New Orleans!'"

Hannan lost a struggle to block the "no nukes" pastoral letter approved by the nation's Catholic bishops in Chicago in 1983. He argued that the politics inherent in the letter could not help disarmament talks.

"Obviously, if the Russians think that 50 million Catholics are going to believe that we must say a `no' to nuclear war ... then, of course, we have no strength from which to argue for disarmament," he said.

Despite what were labeled conservative views, Hannan had few peers in liberal social action.

He said he decided to push the diocese to serve the poor when he walked through the city's squalid public housing projects in 1965, shortly after his transfer from Washington.

Hannan created what was at the time the largest housing program for the elderly ? 2,780 units ? of any U.S. diocese. The archdiocese also operates one of the biggest Catholic Charities in the nation. When Hannan stepped down, its $20 million budget was helping more than 47,000 people a year.

Under his guidance, the church set up a hospice for AIDS patients. He said there was no contradiction in a ministry for homosexuals and drug addicts.

"We disapprove, too, of people being alcoholics or drinking too much. But we sure try to take care of them if they have that problem," he said.

Hannan was born in Washington, D.C., the fourth of eight children born to an Irish immigrant and a fourth-generation Washingtonian. His late sister, Dr. Mary Mahoney, once was president of the National Conference of Catholic Women.

He was ordained in Rome in 1938 and served two years at a church in Baltimore, then volunteered as a paratroops chaplain in World War II, getting the nickname "The Jumping Padre."

When U.S. troops took the city of Cologne, Germany, Hannan dodged through front lines to the cathedral, had himself appointed temporary pastor, and, when the fighting passed, posted Army guards to prevent looting or more damage.

In 1945, Hannan helped liberate a camp of starving prisoners from the German prisoner of war camp at Wobbelin. He was discharged in 1946 with the rank of major.

After the war, he served in the Washington archdiocese, moving up to auxiliary bishop in 1956.

Decades after he left Washington, Hannan still chuckled about the time President Truman, a card-playing Baptist, called him for a discreet visit to the Oval Office.

"Harry Truman had just been bawled out by his pastor ... for proposing an ambassador to the Holy See. Now he was calling in a priest to bless a huge St. Christopher medal for a new presidential airplane."

A team of researchers at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and the University of Washington has conducted the first comprehensive assessment of every gene in the genome of advanced, lethal prostate cancer. Until now, the genetic composition of such tumors had been poorly defined.

In the process, they have discovered a number of potential key drivers ? recurrent genetic mistakes ? common to advanced prostate cancer that may contribute to disease progression. The researchers also have identified several instances of genetic "hypermutation," a gross excess of single-letter DNA "spelling errors" that could cause the cancer to become resistant to therapies commonly used to slow the progression of advanced prostate cancer, such as androgen-blocking drugs and surgical castration.

Corresponding authors Peter S. Nelson, M.D., a member of the Hutchinson Center's Human Biology Division, and Jay Shendure, M.D., Ph.D., an associate professor of Genome Sciences at UW and an affiliate member of the Hutchinson Center's Human Biology Division, and colleagues report their findings Sept. 26 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences Early Edition. The lead author of the paper was Akash Kumar, a graduate student in Genome Sciences and an M.D.-Ph.D. candidate at UW.

"The most interesting finding to come out of our DNA sequencing project was the discovery of three aggressive tumor types that had 10 times the number of mutations compared to the other advanced prostate cancers we studied," Nelson said. "That was very surprising and unusual. We don't know the cause of these hypermutated tumors, but the frequency of the mutations suggests these tumors might evolve very rapidly to develop resistance to therapies."

The discovery of these genetic mutations should provide clues that illuminate why some prostate cancers are lethal, and potentially could be used to develop screening tests for early detection or drug targets to slow or halt cancer growth, Nelson said.

"The mutations underlying the progression of prostate cancer to an advanced state have been understudied to date," Shendure said. "Although further work is certainly necessary, our hope is that identifying the genes in which these mutations occur will facilitate biological insights and the development of new therapeutic strategies."

For the study, the researchers determined the mutational status of 23 aggressive and lethal, drug-resistant human prostate cancers, including those that had metastasized, or spread, beyond their primary site of origin and those that had not. They used a technology called exome sequencing to survey the mutational landscape. This method is more efficient and cost-effective than whole-genome sequencing because it zeroes in on just 1 percent of the human genome ? the exome ? a highly functional region that harbors the majority of disease-causing mutations.

In aggressive tumors, the researchers identified a number of genes with recurrent germline (inheritable) or somatic (noninheritable) mutations, including variants in TP53, a gene that encodes tumor protein p53, which normally functions as a tumor suppressor; and GPC6, a gene that encodes glypican-6, which regulates cell growth and division. They also found recurrent mutations in several genes whose mechanisms in prostate cancer development are not yet well understood, as well as thousands of individual, or "personal," mutations unique to individual tumors.

The researchers also found that of nearly 90 mutations associated with tumors that are resistant to testosterone suppression ? a common treatment for advanced prostate cancer ? each tumor studied had at least one mutation in the Wnt signaling pathway, a network of proteins known to play a variety of important roles in embryonic development and cancer, among other things.

Nelson and researchers at the Hutchinson Center contributed to the concepts underlying the study and confirmed the identified mutations using alternate technologies. Shendure and colleagues at the UW provided key tissue samples and a majority of the exome sequencing and analysis, among other contributions.

Glowing millipedes ooze cyanide to foil attacks

Mysterious glowing millipedes apparently use their radiance to warn nighttime predators to stay away, scientists now find.

More than 12,000 species of millipede are currently known to science, but researchers suggest the vast majority remain undiscovered. The real number of species could actually be as high as 100,000 or so.

Of all these creepy crawlies, eight species are bioluminescent, meaning they can glow just like fireflies and glow worms. All are part of a genus known as Motyxia.

"California is the only place on the planet where you can see glow-in-the-dark millipedes," said researcher Paul Marek, an evolutionary biologist at the University of Arizona. "The Santa Monica Mountains, the Tehachapi Mountains and the southern Sierra Nevada Mountains, all of which are in southern California."

When night falls in these mountains, these millipedes erupt from the ground.

"They spend the day burrowed beneath the soil and leaf material, but even though they are blind, they somehow sense when night falls, and come to the surface to forage and mate and to go about their millipede business," Marek said. It currently remains completely unknown how the millipedes detect the fall of night.

Mystery glow
A greenish-blue light is not the only thing these millipedes give off, however.

"When they are disturbed, they ooze toxic cyanide and foul-tasting chemicals from small pores running along the sides of their bodies as a defense mechanism," Marek said.

The reason why these millipedes glow is a mystery. They are blind, adapted to a lifestyle primarily spent underground, so they cannot use their glow to send messages to other members of their species. Also, while deep-sea angler fish dangle glowing lures in front of their mouths to attract prey, Motyxia are vegetarians just like all other millipedes, feeding mostly on decaying plant material. so they have no need to pull in victims.

Still, a number of poisonous millipede species active during the day are thought to display bright colors to warn predators that they possess toxins and to steer clear. Since Motyxia are instead out in the dark, Marek and his colleagues reasoned, "they use their greenish glow in place of a warning coloration," he said.

Clay millipedes
To test this idea, the researchers experimented with both luminescent millipedes and nonluminescent ones, reckoning that glowing millipedes would be attacked less than nonglowing ones.

"Studying the evolution of warning coloration helps us understand basic evolutionary processes like natural selection and how evolution produces the diversity of life on the planet," Marek said.

To start, Charity Hall, Marek's wife and a metalsmith, made a bronze cast of a millipede. This was used to create molds for 300 fake millipedes from clay. Half of those were painted with an artificial, long-lasting glowing paint matched to the color and brightness of the millipedes, while half were not.

"We had fun making the clay models for the experiment," Marek told LiveScience. "It involved finding suitable clay that would not be inherently attractive or repellant as a result of taste, smell, etcetera."

The researchers also collected real glowing millipedes from Giant Sequoia National Monument in California, from the species Motyxia sequoiae. These are each about 30 millimeters long and 1 gram in mass on average.

"Motyxia are extremely common out there," Marek said. "If you sit there in a moonless night, the ground will look like the starry night sky up above, from all those millipedes glowing in the dark."

The live millipedes were split into two groups. One was covered with paint that concealed their natural glow, while the other was left untreated.

Complete carnage
In their field experiments, the researchers took all these millipedes ? real and fake, glowing and nonglowing ? back to Giant Sequoia National Monument. Individuals from each group were placed singly in random order 16 feet (5 meters) apart. To make sure the live millipedes would not walk out of the experiment, "we used a fly-fishing knot gently tied between their segments to tether them to the ground," Marek explained.

"Fieldwork involved staying up late and then waking up predawn to finish the experiment," Marek said.

The next morning, the researchers, including students Sergio Molina and Eric O'Donnell from Pima Community College in Tucson, Ariz., went to collect the real and fake millipedes and analyze the results.

"It was just carnage," Marek said. "We were really surprised at the predation rate on these millipedes. Overall, about one-third of them, both real and fake, had been attacked."

When it came to the live millipedes, four times as many nonglowing ones showed evidence of attacks compared with their glowing companions. Similarly, in the clay group, nonluminescent models were assaulted twice as often as luminescent ones.

When the researchers matched attack marks on the remains with teeth in rodent skulls collected at the California Academy of Sciences, they concluded the millipedes' most likely predators are small rodents such as the grasshopper mouse (Onychomys torridus).

"Remarkably, most of the predation marks were localized to the head, even in the clay models," Marek said. "Those predators were able to tell the head from the tail end and go for the head first."

"They do this to knock out the 'central command center' first ? the brain, eyes and nerve cord ? after which the rest of the body is incapacitated," Marek added. "Mice and other rodents are very smart predators and foragers. They quickly learn efficient means to obtain food."

The researchers also investigated how this ability to glow evolved in millipedes by analyzing the DNA of both the bioluminescent species and their non-glowing relatives. The relationship between the genes in all the luminescent species revealed the ability to glow apparently evolved only once in millipedes.

"They use a different mechanism than fireflies or glowworms, which use an enzymatic reaction," Marek said. Instead, "the millipedes have a photoprotein that is similar to the photoprotein of the jellyfish Aequorea victoria."

"This is just the tip of the iceberg for the fascinating story of bioluminescence in Motyxia," Marek added. "We still don't know a lot of things about their biology and the circumstances under which luminescence evolved."

The scientists detailed their findings in the Sept. 27 issue of the journal Current Biology.

Schumer Demands Investigation Of OnStar Over Concerns For Drivers? Privacy

Senator Charles Schumer is asking the Federal Trade Commission to investigate OnStar, a company that can track drivers and call emergency services in case of accidents, saying the service is able to violate customers? privacy.

OnStar, which is owned by General Motors, recently changed its customer policy and can now maintain a communication link with a driver?s car, even if the driver no longer subscribes.

The company also reserves the right to sell information to various companies, including customers? odometer readings, seat belt usage and how often the gas tank is filled.

In response to Schumer?s call for an FTC investigation, GM officials said customers have been thoroughly informed of the change and can choose to have the tracking disconnected.

A spokesperson also said the company has not yet sold any customer?s data and has no plans to do so.

Keli Goff: Is Racism Actually Worse in the Age of Obama?

There are plenty of downsides to racism, but the biggest is perhaps the fear and paranoia it instills in those who have experienced it or seen it up close and personal.

More than skin color or even the growing racial wealth gap it is this fear that remains one of the greatest unspoken gulfs between racial minorities, and everybody else. I say this because I -- someone who is occasionally criticized for presenting an optimistic view of race relations in my writing that is increasingly common among my generation -- have experienced this gulf with my white friends. They will simply never know what it's like to assume that the overly attentive sales associate following you around the store (without ever offering to assist you), is following you because she's worried you may steal something because of your race. It's a thought that will simply never cross their minds. (And yes for the record this has happened to me more than once. I've even been followed out of a store so an associate could "double check" that I had "remembered to pay," and this was after I had begun appearing on television regularly and had actually patronized the store several times before.)

But when your parents grow up in the segregated South and you grow up in the age of The Cosby Show, you remain conscious of the fact that being followed in a store will always pale in comparison to being called the n-word every day at school (which happened to my mother) or taunted with the threat of lynching (which happened to my father.) Yet the further along we go into the Obama era, which many assumed would mark the start of a new chapter in American race relations, a provocative question has emerged: Is subtle racism actually more damaging to black Americans than blatant racism?

I had never really considered this question until a panel discussion for the new book Who's Afraid of Post-Blackness? by cultural critic Toure. (Click here to read my interview with Toure on race in the age of Obama.) Among dozens of questions he asked over 100 influential black Americans one was, "What's the most racist thing that's ever happened to you?" Though some shared incidents of breathtaking, blatant racism and of course the N-word made an appearance or two, the most popular answer was what Toure dubbed "the unknowable;" a moment they cited may have negatively impacted their lives in an incredibly significant way, such as a lost job opportunity, or home loan, that they suspect was tied to their race yet ultimately they will never know for sure and never be able to prove it, so there's nothing to be done about it. But it haunts them, in a way that being called the N-word by some jerk out in the open, no longer does.

In the age of Obama in which even David Duke has enough sense not to use the N-word in public, "the unknowable" has become the most common form of discrimination, unknowable, and thus un-provable. It's therefore become a bit like a form of slow burning psychological torture for those who believe they've endured it. After all, it's one thing to struggle to find a job in a horrendous economy -- something people of all races are grappling with. But it's another to know that studies have confirmed that even today just by virtue of being black you are less likely to get a job opportunity than a white male with a prison record, even when you don't have one.

But part of the torture is knowing that because we finally have a black president, accusations of racism are looked upon with more suspicion, eye rolling and dismissal than ever, which only further perpetuates the fear and paranoia. In other words, unless someone actually calls you the N-word, no one wants to hear you whine about racism. By the same token most people -- even racists -- are too sensible to use the N-word, which leaves those who face any form of subtle racism caught between a rock and a boulder. So victims of subtle racism may begin to feel a bit like the Ingrid Bergman character in Gaslight. For those who consider that reference too obscure, here's another. According to recent reports spies for the Russian government have begun aggressively targeting U.S. and British diplomats and journalists with small-scale psychological torture in an effort to drive them insane and ultimately, from the country. The torture in question? Breaking into their homes and moving pictures and other small personal items around. Though there is rarely any real threat of physical danger, the threat of the unknown and the impossible to control, combined with the inability to prove they are being targeted has begun to have the intended effect: driving some from their posts. In previous regimes some targets were even driven to suicide.

I'm far more privileged than most people -- of any race -- and yet I can relate. I recently had an experience in my professional career in which I sensed I was being treated differently than a white counterpart, to my detriment. But I only felt confident enough to confront the issue head on once I shared my concerns with two white friends in the field who assured me that I'm not crazy. Only that's precisely how I had been made to feel when I initially tried to broach the issue with those involved. (No I can't share the details yet, but perhaps one day if my life turns out to be interesting enough to warrant a memoir I will.) Throughout this experience, I've lost count of how many times when discussing the situation with a friend or family member I asked, "Am I crazy?" I may not have been when it all started but I could see how one can literally be driven insane by subtle injustice, in a way someone like me might not by simply being called a racial epithet by someone everyone agrees is a jerk.

It's unlikely that President Obama sits around asking himself "Am I crazy?" as much as the rest of us. Not just because he enjoys the power and privileges that comes with his office. But because growing up in a household with white Americans it is unlikely that the fear and paranoia passed down to some of us, was passed down to him. In fact he probably spent much of his life simply assuming that the salesladies following him around stores just had a crush on him.

For the rest of us, though, the "unknowable" can be pretty daunting.

Don't get me wrong. I wouldn't trade places with what my parents and grandparents went through for a second. Those of us who are living in the age of Obama are incredibly fortunate. On the other hand, life is a lot less complicated when you know without question where you stand with people -- good or bad, right or wrong. Because when your imagination is left to speculate it can drive you crazy.

You know what they say. "Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they're not after you."

LONG BEACH, Wash. (AP) ? After completing their journey west and spending a wet and wretched winter at the mouth of the Columbia River in 1806, William Clark and Meriwether Lewis prepared to head home. There was just one problem: They were short a canoe.

So they stole one from the Native Americans who had kept them alive all winter.

It has long been a sore subject with Chinook Indians in the Pacific Northwest, who perceived the theft as a major insult. Canoes were a sacred part of their culture and an important mode of transportation.

More than 200 years later, William Clark's descendants will make amends by presenting a 36-foot replica of the canoe to the Chinook Indian Nation during a ceremony here Saturday.

"We talked about what happened 205 years ago, and we believed that things could be restored if something like this were done," said Carlota Clark Holton of St. Louis, Mo., seven generations removed from William Clark.

"I think everyone acknowledges that it was wrong, and we wanted to right a wrong," she said. "The family was very much behind it."

The Lewis and Clark expedition arrived at the Columbia River's estuary in late 1805. They built a fortification outside present-day Astoria and called it Fort Clatsop, after a tribe that is part of the Chinook Nation.

Though they braved the previous winter in North Dakota, the explorers found the rainy season on the northern Pacific Coast far worse.

"The winds violent," a grumpy Clark wrote. "Trees falling in every (direction), (whirl) winds, with gust of rain, hail and thunder, this kind of weather lasted all day, certainly one of the worst days that ever was."

The expedition couldn't find any elk and was running low on tobacco and goods to trade with Native Americans.

The captains decided to head home that spring but found they were also short on boats. So they took one from the Chinook.

The expedition then whitewashed the theft by saying the tribe owed them for six stolen elk, a debt the Native Americans ? and historians ? say was repaid by delivering three dogs to Fort Clatsop.

Historian James Ronda, an expert on the Corps of Discovery's dealings with American Indians, said the theft was significant because it violated the explorers' code of ethical conduct.

"The captains were abandoning a two-year tradition of never stealing from the Indians," Ronda wrote in his book "Lewis and Clark Among The Indians."

Ronda told The AP in a phone interview from Tulsa, Okla., "It was theft, and a malicious thing to do."

The expedition left Fort Clatsop on March 23, bound for home.

Two hundred years later, Clark Holton was working at a Washington, D.C., nonprofit when she was introduced to Ray Gardner, chairman of the Chinook Nation's tribal council. The two worked on a project to bring down dams in the area, and on a trip paddling down a Virginia river, they talked about the canoe theft and its consequences to the Chinook.

Some of Clark's descendants and a few friendly donors eventually stepped forward to pay for the canoe, which was custom built in Veneta, Ore.

The Chinook Indian Nation is not formally recognized by the U.S. government. Federal recognition would make the tribe eligible for economic assistance, land, housing grants and other government benefits.

Whatever happens with the Chinook's continued efforts for recognition, the tribe is looking forward to the Saturday ceremony with Clark's descendants.

The canoe will be cleansed, blessed and named, Gardner said. Then, it becomes a living member of the tribe.

"Once it's named, then we'll take it down and put it in the Columbia River," Gardner said. "I know I'm going to be skippering it."

Melanoma: Infusing chemotherapy into the liver gives extra months of disease-free life in melanoma patients

ScienceDaily (Sep. 23, 2011) ? Melanoma of the eye (ocular or uveal melanoma) frequently spreads to the liver and, once this has happened, there is no effective treatment and patients die within an average of two to four months. Only about one in ten patients live for a year. Now, final results from a phase III study have demonstrated that a new treatment significantly extends the time patients can live without the disease progressing.

James Pingpank, associate professor of surgery at the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute (Pittsburgh, USA), told the 2011 European Multidisciplinary Cancer Congress on September 24 that, by April 2011, the length of time that patients survived without the metastases spreading further in the liver (disease progression) was an average of 8.1 months for those receiving the new treatment compared to 1.6 months in the group of patients that had been randomised to receive the best alternative care.

The new treatment is called percutaneous hepatic perfusion (PHP) and is designed to saturate the liver with high doses of chemotherapy without affecting the rest of the body. The chemotherapy drug melphalan is infused directly into the liver via an intra-arterial catheter over a period of 30 minutes. Blood in the veins leading out of the liver is then captured and filtered through a specially designed, double-balloon catheter to extract the drug before the cleaned blood is returned to the body. This enables the drug to be delivered directly to the liver to target the melanoma metastases there, but in a minimally invasive manner. The patient is monitored in intensive care before being allowed home. Once the liver has recovered from the toxicity of the treatment, the procedure is repeated every four to eight weeks.

In a phase III, randomised trial that took place in nine US clinics, 93 patients were randomised to receive PHP or best alternative care between February 2006 and July 2009. Best alternative care (BAC) was decided by the patient's treatment team and could involve interleukin 2, ipilimumab, transcatheter arterial chemoembolisation (TACE), systemic chemotherapy or inclusion in a clinical trial.

As the study was not designed to show an overall survival benefit, and most of the patients had no other treatment options available to them, patients were allowed to cross over from the BAC arm of the study to the PHP arm once the benefits of PHP became apparent.

PHP patients had an overall progression-free survival time of 6.1 months versus 1.6 months in the BAC group. Overall survival at one year was 29% on PHP versus 26% on BAC. Due to the fact that 51% of patients crossed over from the BAC arm to the PHP arm, overall survival was not significantly different between the two groups: 11.4 months on PHP versus 9.9 months on BAC. However, those patients who did cross over seemed to do well despite being amongst the sickest, surviving for 9.2 months without the disease progressing in the liver, and 6.5 months without any overall progression of the disease.

Prof Pingpank will say: "This is the first phase III study of PHP in patients with liver-dominant metastatic melanoma and shows that PHP with melphalan significantly improves overall response rates and progression-free survival, providing a new treatment option for the disease. This report includes all data on patients who are more than one year on from inclusion in the trial and we now have all the final response rates. The only thing that may change over time is the examination of the possible long-term benefits, as all but one of the surviving patients were treated with PHP or crossed over to receive it."

For a disease that currently has few treatment options and no chance of a cure, Prof Pingpank says PHP offers patients extra months of, usually, good quality life. Although the adverse effects of PHP were more severe than BAC, they were short-lived. "Side effects were predominantly neutropenia [low white blood cell count] and thrombocytopenia [low platelet count]. The majority of patients were able to undergo multiple treatments in the PHP arm, as toxicity resolved, whereas the major toxicity in the control arm was liver failure and/or death on treatment from disease progression," he will say.

"This is the first treatment to show a clinical benefit in patients with liver metastases from ocular melanoma. Most patients retain 80% or more of their daily functional status, and return to full performance once therapy is completed. If subsequent recurrence is noted in the liver, retreatment is possible and effective. At this point, it appears that there are groups of patients surviving substantially longer than those control arm of the study, with good quality of liver and preservation of liver function."

PHP potentially could be used for other cancers that have spread to the liver. "We have demonstrated efficacy in a phase II setting for patients with metastatic neuroendocrine tumours, so the application of this technology is likely to expand to other tumour types," says Prof Pingpank. "In addition, we have previously demonstrated efficacy of high dose regional melphalan for patients with metastatic colorectal cancer, albeit through a different circuit."

The device that delivers and filters the melphalan has been approved in Europe for use in all malignant liver tumours, while approval is pending in the USA for melanoma only.

Prof Pingpank will conclude: "Certainly, with 50 percent of melanoma patients with metastatic liver disease dying of liver failure, we see this as a frontline therapy for patients with this disease. There is always controversy surrounding the application of regional therapy to patients with metastatic disease, especially when there is a high risk for metastases elsewhere in the body. However, at present, the dearth of options for patients with metastatic melanoma renders this a moot point, and this therapy will be an early choice for patients with liver-only disease."

Former president of ECCO and Director General of the Institut de Canc?rologie Gustave Roussy (Paris, France), Professor Alexander Eggermont said: "The maturity of the data presented today better depicts the value as well as the limitations of percutaneous hepatic perfusion. One of the interesting points is that, in these relatively good patients, those that crossed over from the BAC arm of the study have good progression-free survival after a 'late' PHP that is about the same as when PHP is given upfront. In the absence of identified targets for targeted drugs in uveal melanoma, one might consider testing the role of ipilimumab following a PHP."

ESMO spokesman, Professor Ulrich Keilholz, of the Department of Hematology and Medical Oncology and Deputy Director at the Charit? Comprehensive Cancer Center, Berlin, Germany, said: "The study by Pingpank is the first phase III trial in uveal melanoma and the first trial to show a benefit of regional treatment for liver metastases in this disease. Given the current lack of targeted drugs in this disease -- in contrast to the emerging treatments in cutaneous melanoma -- the clinically relevant benefit achieved with melphalan perfusion provides a new reference treatment for patients with hepatic metastases of uveal melanoma."

What a great story about the 96 year old Navy veteran, Russell W. Snyder who to date has been the oldest 8th June Honor Flight Traveler and to put the icing on the cake, his son, Dennis surprised his father by booking a limousine, taking them to the airport in style.

His son Dennis, who is an Air Force Veteran, was along for the day to be his father's guardian on the June 8 Flight. He said his father, who is still independent aged 96, had never been in a limousine up to 2011. Dennis said that even though it meant spending a bit more money it was well worth it. His Dad really enjoyed it.

The recorded temperature in Washington DC on the day was 110 degrees. But Russell W. Snyder said he was not bothered by the heat, even though the high temperatures made some of the female guardians unwell. He said that he was very happy to have his son along with him as his guardian and he was impressed with the hospitality of the Findlay volunteers.

It's lovely to hear stories like this and when you think about it here in America it used to be that many of us would relate riding in such a fine automobile to being like the President of United States. Of course these days it is a completely different story.

But if you think about it, really it is only 80 years ago or so when the U.S. government was commissioning special vehicles for the use of the President. These limousines are traditionally equipped with defense counter-measures, armor plating, features of special convenience and advanced communications technology.

Although the first U.S. President to travel in an automobile was President William McKinley, the first Presidential limo was built for and used by Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1939.

This first Presidential Limousine was called the Sunshine Special; it was a Lincoln V12 convertible with grab handles for the Secret Service, a two-way radio, a siren, running lights and extra width running boards.

Rumors have it that the Presidential limousine which went into service in 2009 has a price tag on it of around $300,000. Even though this information has been sourced in Wikipedia it is not confirmed, so for now it is just a rumor!!

For the rest of us who aren't expecting to be President of the United States of America, why not enjoy the feeling of travelling in the ultimate style in a luxurious limousine.

Ryan limited in practice after pounding by Eagles

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. - Atlanta quarterback Matt Ryan was limited in practice Wednesday after taking a pounding against Philadelphia, but he'll be ready to go when the Falcons take on NFC South rival Tampa Bay.

Ryan was listed as having a knee injury. He would only say he feels about normal for the middle of the week after a physical game.

"You're still a little sore, but I'll be good to go and ready to roll on Sunday," he said.

The Falcons (1-1) need to do a better job protecting Ryan, who's already been sacked nine times and hit 17 more times. Help might be on the way. Longtime center Todd McClure returned to the practice field for the first time since undergoing minor knee surgery late in the preseason.

McClure got in limited work and the team hopes he'll be ready to return against the Buccaneers. He had made 144 consecutive starts for the Falcons before his injury.

"It was great to have Todd back," coach Mike Smith said. "Obviously we missed his leadership out there the first two games."

Two players were held out of practice: defensive tackle Jonathan Babineaux (knee) and nickel back Kelvin Hayden (hamstring). Babineaux was hurt in the opener and didn't play against the Eagles. Hayden got the start against Philadelphia and made a key interception before he was injured.

Joining Ryan and McClure in getting limited work were receiver Roddy White (thigh) and defensive end Ray Edwards (foot). Defensive tackle Corey Peters (back) and backup safety Shann Schillinger (neck) both participated fully in the nearly two-hour-long practice.
