School Board Limits Public Speaking to Five Minutes - Schools ...

A 2009 policy was reinforced during the most recent school board meeting.

The Lindenhurst Board of Education reinforced an older policy during their regular business meetings ? keeping public questions to five minutes or less.

"We're going to be enforcing this?from this meeting on forward," noted board president Donna Hochmann, noting it was a policy put in place in 2009. The entire text of the policy, paced on February 4, 2009, was given as a handout before the meeting.

"If anyone else has any further questions that go past their five minutes, they can submit them in writing to the district office and all their questions will be answered," Hochmann said.

The policy reads:?"To allow for public participation, a period not to exceed 30 minutes shall be set aside during the first part of each Board meeting... Presentation should be as brief as possible. No speaker will be permitted to speak for longer than five minutes."

Some of the attendees during the meeting voiced their displeasure with the reinforcement of the policy, which had not been brought up in the last few months.

Former board member Julie Bartolomeo, who commonly asks multiple questions regarding the agenda at the meetings, noted her displeasure with the reinforced rule by visibly?setting her own phone's timer to make sure she did not go over the new limit.

The entire text of the 2009 policy can be found on the Lindenhurst School District's website.
