Mavericks trade NBA draft rights to former Lake Howell, UF standout

The Dallas Mavericks have traded the NBA rights to Nick Calathes to the Memphis Grizzlies, it was announced Monday.

The move, which sends Dallas a 2016 second-round draft pick,?appears to greatly increase?the likelihood that Calathes will play in the NBA following four seasons overseas.?The former Lake Howell and University of Florida standout played three seasons in Greece, then last season averaged 12.6 points, 5.3 rebounds and 4.2 assists per game for Lokomotiv Kuban in Russia.

Calathes, 24, has a second year remaining on his Russian contract. He has an NBA buyout clause in?the deal and worked out for Dallas coach Rick Carlisle in June.

Memphis, which won a franchise record 56 games and reached the Western Conference finals for the first time, is looking to solidify its backup point guard situation. The Grizzlies currently have?three point guards on their roster: starter Mike Conley, second-year backup Tony Wroten and veteran Keyon Dooling.?Dooling is a free agent who is negotiating with other teams and appears likely to sign elsewhere.

NBA teams are permitted to pay up to $500,000 to buy out international contracts and all signs indicate Calathes is more than willing to listen to NBA offers. On his Twitter account Calathes posted this message on Monday:

?Thanks for the welcome everybody glad to be a part of Grizz Nation!!!?

The 6-foot-6 former All-SEC player left Panathinaikos Athens of the Greek League to play for Lokomotiv Kuban last season. He was MVP in leading the Russian franchise to its first EuroCup title in April, averaging 12.9 points, 6.7 assists and 5.9 rebounds in that tournament.

Dallas has beefed up its backcourt this offseason. The Mavs used the No. 18 pick in the June 27 draft to take another locally-grown point guard ? former Dr. Phillips standout Shane Larkin ? and then signed Israel star Gal Mekel and added veterans Jose Calderon and Monta Ellis via free agency.

Calderon, 31, signed a four year $29 million deal three weeks ago to depart Detroit and is now the presumed starter for Dallas.?

Larkin suffered a broken ankle in practice after the draft and is likely out until training camp in October.

Calathes was a second round NBA draft pick (45th overall) in 2009 after he had agreed to leave UF for a deal in Greece, where he has dual citizenship. He helped Panathinaikos win two Greek League titles.

Calathes was SEC Freshman of the Year in 2008an d all-conference as a sophomore for the Gators, when he averaged 17.2 points, 5.3 rebounds and a league-leading 6.2 assists per game.

He was Florida Mr. Basketball as a high school junior and senior and combined with current Houston Rockets forward Chandler Parsons and former VCU standout Joey Rodriguez in leading Lake Howell to the 2006-07 Class 5A state championship.

SPOKANE, Wash. -- Gonzaga marked the beginning of a long road for Richie Frahm. It took him around the world, meandered from one NBA city to the next, only to lead him back to Spokane. Like anyone on an unfamiliar path, the road Frahm was looking for seemed to find him.

After retiring in 2011 and spending some time as an assistant in the NBA's Developmental League, Frahm and his wife returned to Spokane. In spring of 2012 he brought a bike given to him by his brother to a shop. While there, a member of the River City Red cycling team introduced himself to Frahm,

Just as he put on mileage going from team to team, he's now racking up a different kind with his bike. Watch KREM 2 News at 6:00 p.m. on Monday to see just how far Frahm's new passion for cycliing is taking him.?

GOP's self-destructive on Obamacare

Speaker John Boehner stands next to a printed version of the Affordable Care Act on May 16 in Washington.

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

  • House Republicans voted to delay Affordable Care Act's individual health care mandate
  • Julian Zelizer: GOP risks fissures as Obamacare benefits become clear to Americans
  • He says GOP governors are at odds with legislators over aspects of the law
  • Zelizer: Uncompromising stance on health care is bad strategy for GOP

Editor's note: Julian Zelizer is a professor of history and public affairs at Princeton University. He is the author of "Jimmy Carter" and "Governing America."

(CNN) -- Last week, House Republicans voted to delay the implementation of the individual mandate of the Affordable Care Act, trying to take advantage of President Obama's announcement that the employer mandate will be delayed for a year. The vote is purely symbolic as there is no chance that the Senate will pass the bill.

Striking a populist tone, Republicans argued that individuals should be afforded the same rights as big businesses. The response of the GOP is predictable, as House Republicans have been steadfast in their efforts to block the administration from making progress on any new bills and to cause problems for those that are already on the books. The hope of conservatives like Paul Ryan is that this is just the first step.

Karl Rove's Crossroads also released a video called "ObamaCareNado," playing on the television movie phenomenon "Sharknado," with the announcer warning that "Nobody is safe from its wrath." The video throws in a healthy dose of IRS images, just in case anyone thought that scandal would be soon laid to rest.

And on yesterday's "Face the Nation", Speaker John Boehner called Obama's health care law "not ready for prime time" and promised further action to seek to block it, saying, "we're going to stay at it."

But if House Republicans keep pushing too hard against the Affordable Care Act, they could easily open up more internal fissures, creating a party that is even more fraught with tensions as the presidential election of 2016 comes closer.

The strategy of congressional Republicans toward the health care program has evolved. At first, Republicans were relatively unified in their opposition, both during the debate over the passage of the legislation in 2009 and 2010 and in the two years that followed with the early stages of implementation.

During that time, almost every Republican consistently challenged the argument that the legislation would improve the overall quality of the nation's health care system and make it more equitable.

Republicans also challenged its constitutional legitimacy. But those arguments started to fade away among Republicans, first when the Supreme Court ruled that the law was constitutional in June 2012 and then when President Obama was re-elected.

The internal tensions among Republicans became worse over the past few months as the states needed to make decisions about whether to take an infusion of federal Medicaid funding that was part of the legislation, a key component that would help insure more of the poor.

Not only did many red-state Republicans believe this funding would help constituents, but they also heard from doctors and hospitals that depend on Medicaid to survive. When Congress originally passed the bill, most Republican governors had steadfastly insisted that they would not accept the funds. But those objections started to fade away for many in the GOP when the money was actually before them.

Many stalwart conservative governors, like Rick Scott in Florida, John Kasich in Ohio, and Jan Brewer in Arizona said they would take the funds despite previous statements. They found themselves in open conflict with their own Republican legislatures over the issue. Those tensions have not all been resolved, but the support of Republican governors for the money changed the political dynamics quite significantly.

Now the challenges for the House Republicans who are still opposing the bill are becoming even more difficult -- despite all the press about how the delay in the employer mandate signals huge challenges -- as concrete benefits start to roll out.

This was already clear when younger Americans under 26 started to enjoy continued coverage under their parents' plans, a fact not forgotten in the election when the youth vote swung to Obama once again.

Now the challenges are intensifying. The same week that there was all the discussion about the delay of the mandate, and as Republicans were trying to seize advantage from the delay, The New York Times reported more visible signs of what the program may bring. For those who don't receive benefits through their employers and will purchase benefits through health care exchanges, the cost of insurance will fall by 50% or more. In New York City an individual could see his or her bill drop from $1,000 a month to $308 a month. Similar declines have been reported in California and Oregon.

Unless something goes terribly wrong for ACA, House Republicans might want to think twice about continuing with their attacks on this program. As ACA gets further away from the period when the program was most vulnerable, and as the administration is getting closer to the period when the benefits start rolling out, more constituents -- in red and blue states -- will cast a skeptical eye toward any legislator who tries to take away their benefits.

Speaker John Boehner, already struggling as House Republicans make decisions on immigration that could have detrimental effects on the political standing of the party, might want to move on to different issues.

narrato

Third of Britons see interest rates rising in next 12 months - poll

LONDON (Reuters) - More than a third of Britons think interest rates will rise in the next 12 months, a survey showed on Sunday, suggesting the Bank of England's first attempt to ease concern over higher rates ahead has had little effect beyond financial markets.

The bank and its new governor, Mark Carney, will have to hope for more success with their next try - likely to come in more detailed form in early August - as they work to encourage consumers to spend more and spur economic growth.

The survey by financial data company Markit found that on top of the 35 percent of respondents who expected the Bank to raise rates over the next year, a further 18 percent thought it would happen in 13 to 24 months' time.

Only 16 percent of Britons agreed with financial markets, which are predicting that the central bank will start raising interest rates in two years' time at the earliest.

"The survey results present the Bank with the challenge of better communicating the prospect of an extended period of low interest," said Markit economist Chris Williamson.

"The spectre of higher interest rates is a key factor restraining many of the UK's 11 million mortgage holders from feeling comfortable about increasing their current spending."

The outcome of the July 10-15 survey for Markit chimes with the findings of the Bank poll of households in May, before the central bank's latest steer on interest rates.

On July 4, after its first policy meeting under Carney, the Bank took the unusual step of warning that investors were predicting higher rates too soon.

That caused markets to push back expectations of the first rate rise into the second half of 2015 from the first half as thought before the announcement.

Markit's survey found that 27 percent of respondents had no view on what would happen to rates, in a sign of uncertainty that could be also curbing consumption.

The Bank cut rates to a record low of 0.5 percent in 2009 and has kept them there ever since as the British economy has struggled to recover from the financial crisis.

On August 7, the bank is due to report on the merits of sending clear signals on how long it will keep rates low. It will probably adopt such forward guidance, a policy favoured by Carney. In his former job running the Bank of Canada, he pledged to keep rates super-low for over a year.

In the survey, around 1,500 people were interviewed on behalf of Markit.
