Schumer Demands Investigation Of OnStar Over Concerns For Drivers? Privacy
(Sunday, September 25th, 2011)Senator Charles Schumer is asking the Federal Trade Commission to investigate OnStar, a company that can track drivers and call emergency services in case of accidents, saying the service is able to violate customers? privacy.
OnStar, which is owned by General Motors, recently changed its customer policy and can now maintain a communication link with a driver?s car, even if the driver no longer subscribes.
The company also reserves the right to sell information to various companies, including customers? odometer readings, seat belt usage and how often the gas tank is filled.
In response to Schumer?s call for an FTC investigation, GM officials said customers have been thoroughly informed of the change and can choose to have the tracking disconnected.
A spokesperson also said the company has not yet sold any customer?s data and has no plans to do so.
