Project VisAbility Assists Paralyzed Veterans at Spinal Cord Injury Center
Delray Beach, FL (PRWEB) September 7, 2010
Project VisAbility announced the donation of a new Johnny G Krankcycle by Matrix to the Veterans Administration spinal cord injury center in Long Beach, CA. The new equipment will provide the paralyzed veterans in the program with a new way to train and stay fit.
Funds for the donation of the Krankcycle were raised during a campaign in Long Beach, CA. In addition to Project VisAbility, Frog?s Fitness, California State University, Long Beach and the Student Veterans Network of CSULB played a key role in facilitating the spin-a-thon and Kranking? fundraising event that took place May 1st, 2010 on campus at CSULB.
The Spinal Cord Injury and Disorders Health Care Group (SCI/D HCG), part of the VA Long Beach healthcare system in California, has a long history of excellence in providing specialty care, education, and research, and addresses the medical, physical, psychological, social, spiritual and vocational aspects of patients and their families.
?Having the Krankcycle at our facility brings a new dimension to our training and fitness program says Marsha Hamamoto, registered kinesiotherapist and SCI clinical specialist. ?Our goal is long-term maintenance of health and fitness. Treatment promotes general healthcare and wellness with a focus on preventing secondary health conditions and functional losses. The addition of the Krankcycle to our facility will allow our veterans to engage in a fun physical activity throughout this process.?
The Paralyzed Veterans of America (PVA) is a non-profit organization with offices at the VA center in Long Beach. They support spinal cord injured patients, helping to ensure the right care and programs are in place and properly funded. Art Lyles, President and National Director of the California PVA (CPVA), along with the national service officer believes the addition of the Krankcycle to the center will be a real benefit to their patients? rehabilitation. ?As advocates, we want to make sure our veterans have the best care and equipment and we are very excited about having the Krankcycle as part of the program. It?s perfect for those with spinal cord injuries, as a fun and engaging way to work out.?
Kranking? is the first exercise program to focus on the upper body as a way to build cardio fitness. The Krankcycle is the innovation of Johnny G ? the creator of Spinning?. It represents a new way to build aerobic capacity and upper body strength, burn calories and build core stability. And since it utilizes the upper body instead of the legs, it provides a unique opportunity for people with physical disabilities to train along with everyone else or independently. Project VisAbility wants to take this one step further ? not only to have individuals with physical challenges participate, but to lead, motivate and inspire as group exercise instructors.
?The Johnny G Krankcycle by Matrix is fully wheelchair accessible and allows injured veterans, as well as other physically disabled individuals stay fit with a fun, engaging and challenging workout,? says Debbie Miller, the President and CEO of Project VisAbility. ?Project VisAbility supports vocational development and helps to create jobs in health and fitness for veterans and others with physical challenges as group exercise instructors, using the Krankcycle as well as other equipment and inclusive programs. We?re delighted to be able to give back to the wounded warriors who served and fought for all of us.?
