Flood insurance is crucial in protecting your home during hurricane season.
WTOC spoke with State Farm agent Mike Holland who said you cant add flood coverage during a named storm, but, as soon as the storm passes, you can update your policy.
There's plenty of myths out there about flood insurance but experts say the bottom line is, the extra few hundred dollars a year is worth it. To be eligible for flood insurance, you have to live in a community that participates in the National Flood Insurance Program.
It's also important to note renters and homeowners insurance are separate policies from flood insurance. Holland also said if you don't have coverage yet, the first thing you need to do is make a plan for emergency and be aware of everything you own.
"It's very important that you protect your property and you know what property you have by doing an inventory. But, you have to put that plan into action and it's always good to talk to your insurance agent about what type of coverage you have."
