Your thyroid gland lies just under your Adam?s apple in your neck. The gland consists of two lobes that lie just in front and at either side of the windpipe. Your thyroid is part of your body?s ?endocrine system.? The endocrine system consists of various glands that secrete hormones into your bloodstream. In particular, the thyroid gland secretes thyroid hormones. These hormones control the speed at which your body?s chemical functions happen ? in other words, your metabolism. The thyroid gland needs iodine to produce thyroid hormones. Your thyroid also produces a hormone called ?calcitonin,? which is involved in the metabolism of your bones. Hormones are chemical messengers that are released into the bloodstream by endocrine glands. As a hormone circulates through your body via the bloodstream, it delivers messages to other parts of your body. Almost every cell in your body, from those in your brain to those in your feet, responds to the thyroid hormone. Your cells respond to thyroid hormone with an increase in metabolic activity. Your metabolism is basically the processes in your body that produce energy and the chemical substances that are necessary for cells to grow, divide to form new cells, and perform other important functions. Basically, the message the thyroid hormone gives to your cells is to ?go.? Your heart rate increases, your breathing rate increases and the use of proteins, fats and carbohydrates increases. Skeletal muscles work more efficiently, muscle tone in your digestive system increases and mental alertness and thinking skills are sharpened. Keeps Everything Running Smoothly Normally, your thyroid keeps everything running at a steady rate. This is what doctors mean when they use the word ?homeostasis.? There is a whole control system in your body that helps your cells function at an appropriate metabolic rate. The system works something like this: ? Detector cells in the brain monitor the level of thyroid hormone in your blood ? When the level of thyroid hormone drops, these cells send signals to your pituitary gland, which is found in the brain ? The pituitary gland then releases a substance called ?thyroid-stimulating hormone? (TSH) into your bloodstream ? TSH, in turn, signals cells in the thyroid gland to release more thyroid hormone into your bloodstream ? When the blood level of thyroid hormone has increased enough, the detector cells send signals to the pituitary gland to stop release of TSH Hyperthyroidism Symptoms Hyperthyroidism is a condition in which there is overproduction of thyroid hormone. When your thyroid produces too much hormone, you are said to have an ?overactive thyroid.? When this happens, you may experience any of the following symptoms: ? difficulty sleeping ? excessive sweating ? extreme tiredness ? hair loss ? inability to tolerate heat ? nervousness and irritability ? rapid heartbeat, including palpitations ? shakiness and muscle weakness, often with trembling in the hands ? weight gain ? weight loss, with a normal or increased appetite Treating Hyperthyroidism Naturally If your thyroid gland is overactive, there are a number of steps that you can take. Medical treatment of hyperthyroidism usually involves prescribing synthetic thyroid hormone. Sometimes surgery is also recommended. Naturopathic doctors may differ slightly in their approach to the treatment of hyperthyroidism. They will likely use desiccated natural thyroid hormone complete with all thyroid hormones. Thyroid-hormone replacement is usually necessary in most cases of hyperthyroidism. Limit Intake of Goitrogenic Foods There are other ways that you can help an overactive thyroid, however. Changing your diet is one strategy. Try to limit your intake of ?goitrogenic? foods. Goitrogenic foods contain natural ?goitrogens.? Goitrogens are chemicals that cause the enlargement of the thyroid gland by interfering with the production of thyroid hormone. Rapeseed (canola), cabbage, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, cauliflower, sweet potatoes, maize, lima beans, soya and pearl millet are all goitrogenic foods. Cooking does help make the goitrogens less effective, so try that instead of consuming these foods raw. On the other hand, foods that contain iodine, such as kelp, beetroot, radishes, parsley, potatoes, fish, oatmeal and bananas should be kept in your diet. The interaction between iodine and the thryroid gland is a complex one. Iodine is needed by your body to form thyroid hormone. Goiter and hyperthyroidism could happen because of an iodine deficiency. However, if you consume large amounts of iodine, it could result in either hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism. Most multivitamins contain about 150 micrograms (mcg) of iodine (which is also the recommended daily intake (RDI) for iodine). This should be enough to stop iodine deficiency, but not enough to cause any harm. You May Be Low in Tyrosine People with hyperthyroidism tend to be deficient in an amino acid called ?tyrosine.? Tyrosine is an essential part of your thyroid hormones and neurotransmitters. Health-care providers often recommend a low dose of ?thyroxine? (the major hormone that?s secreted by your thyroid gland) to correct hypothyroidism. People with depression also have low levels of tyrosine, which is why this condition is sometimes linked to hyperthyroidism. There are many vitamins that are needed for the synthesis of thyroxine. Vitamins A, B2, B3, B6, C and E are all important. The B vitamins and copper are very important for tyrosine metabolism. Copper, iron, selenium and zinc are needed in the production of other thyroid hormones. There are also some herbs that could help combat hyperthyroidism. Nettle is unique in that in could balance your thyroid to remedy both under- and overactivity. Bladderwrack ? a type of brown seaweed ? contains iodine, which helps regulate your thyroid. Kelp has been linked to being able to help with hypothyroidism. Some people with hyperthyroidism have also improved their conditions by taking Chinese herbs. Another simple treatment for hyperthyroidism that you can try on your own is good old-fashioned exercise. Exercise will increase your cell tissue sensitivity to the thyroid hormone. It will also stimulate thyroid-gland secretion. This could be especially helpful when you are dieting. When you diet, your metabolic rate goes down, but exercise can help prevent this decline. Try to get between 15 and 20 minutes of exercise per day. This should be enough to be beneficial in the treatment of an overactive thyroid. Choose exercises that are strenuous enough to raise your heartbeat, such as walking briskly, swimming, running and cycling. One other point to consider is to look at whether you have chemical sensitivities. Research has shown that there is a connection between hyperthyroidism and those with multiple chemical sensitivities. People who are exposed to toxic heavy metals and other substances through their work often suffer from depression, fatigue, poor memory and constipation. These symptoms are all typical of someone with hypothyroidism.

Two articles in this week's PLoS Medicine address the question of whether films with smoking scenes should have "adult" ratings applied to them.
Christopher Millett from Imperial College, London, UK and colleagues report that, despite the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control recommendation that films with smoking scenes have adult content rating, very few governments have complied with this advice. Arguing that exposure to tobacco imagery in movies is a "potent cause of youth experimentation and progression to established smoking," the authors say their primary reason for supporting the film rating recommendation is to create an economic incentive for producers to leave smoking out of movies that are marketed to youths.
Even more problematic, the authors say, is the fact that "many governments provide generous subsidies to the US film industry to produce youth-rated films that contain smoking and as such indirectly promote youth smoking."
"Governments should ensure that film subsidy programmes are harmonized with public health goals by making films with tobacco imagery ineligible for public subsidies," the authors conclude.
In an Essay also published this week in PLoS Medicine and addressing the same issue, Simon Chapman from the University of Sydney, Sydney, Australia and Matthew Farrelly from RTI International, USA strongly argue against adult ratings for film with smoking scenes, laying out four reasons why they believe this to be ill-advised. They argue that 1) the link between exposure to smoking in movies and smoking uptake is vexed by substantial confounding; 2) exposure to smoking scenes is much wider than just films, including internet; 3) adult classification of films is a highly inefficient way of preventing youth exposure to adult-rated content; and 4) censorship is not the best approach for this public health issue.
The authors say: "We believe that many citizens and politicians who would otherwise give unequivocal support to important tobacco control policies would not wish to be associated with efforts to effectively censor movies other than to prevent commercial product placement by the tobacco industry."

Children who attend day fitness bootcamp or who attend one away from home learn valuable lessons about healthy eating. Some day camps offer afternoon or morning programs for children as young as six who engage in group exercise and lessons about nutrition. Other fitness bootcamps build a program around weight loss and lifestyle changes for teenagers.
The fitness bootcamp idea is derived from the military bootcamps designed to turn men and women with average fitness level into physically stronger, healthier individuals. If you are looking for the right program for your child, be careful that the procedures used are safe and that the instructors are properly certified. If your child needs to lose weight, talk to your pediatrician about the camp options and get his or her input about the program that will be most beneficial. Be careful that the program does not expect too much from a child who is not normally physically active. A good fitness bootcamp should be able to adjust exercise methods for children with specific health and weight issues.

Some of the primary requirements for a functioning basement office including heat, light, communications services for both your computer and phone/fax, and the proper wiring to accommodate the electical needs of computers and other business machines like copiers and printers.
One good idea if you're starting with an unfinished basement is to add stud walls in the room that will be your office. Stud walls allow you to run new wiring into the basement. You might also want to add a separate circuit to isolate your computer and other sensitive equipment from the power in the rest of your home. Always consult with a qualified electrician before adding a new circuit or doing any major rewiring. And plan on adding enough electrical outlets so that equipment can be moved around in case you decide to change the layout of your office at a later date.
The other important consideration, and topic of this article, is providing the proper lighting for your basement office. Adaquate and proper lighting is important for anyone spending long hours working in an office environment. Just ask anyone who's driven home from work squinting through a set of raw, tired eyes.
There are two primary types of lighting you'll want to include in your new office - ambient or "central" lighting that illuminates the whole room, and "task" lighting that illuminates your work area and prevents eye strain.
Ambient light can come from several sources, including ceiling fixtures, and daylight if you happen to have windows in your basement. If you don't have windows, you can still make your space more habitable by using what's known as "full spectrum" light bulbs. These bulbs radiate light in a spectrum similar to natural sunlight.
Task lighting is flexible and can be directed where you need it. A desk lamp is a good example of task lighting. Track lighting is another good source of task lighting, as the individual heads can be trained on different sections of the room - on a copier or fax machine, for example.
Track lighting is also a great choice in rooms where electrical service in ceiling limits your lighting placement options. One advantage of a track is its ability to handle multiple fixtures in a linear configuration, allowing one electrical access point to supply fixtures in many parts of the room.
Track lighting fixtures are available in low-voltage or standard operating current depending on the application. There are also a variety of light sources available, including tungsten-halogen, incandescent, or energy-saving compact fluorescent bulbs.
One last item when completing your basement office is a portable dehumidifier. High humidity in basements can slow the drying time of documents printed in inkjet printers, causing them to smear; and it can promote mold and otherwise damage valuable books and other important documents.

Here?s another sign of the difficult times we live in: The percentage of Americans who are either working or looking for work is at the lowest level in more than a quarter century.
The labor force participation rate for Americans 16 and over hit 63.9 percent in July, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
That?s the lowest level since 1984, back when Ronald Reagan was president and the United States? economy was in strong shape following back-to-back recessions in 1980-1982.
The labor force participation rate generally tends to dip in economic hard times, and some see it as a sign that people are dropping out of ? or not coming into ? the labor force because they don?t think they can find a job.
There?s no question the job market is difficult. The unemployment rate was 9 percent in July, with nearly 14 million people looking for work.
In addition, there were 1.1 million discouraged workers in July, which the BLS defines as people who aren?t currently looking for work because they don?t think there?s a job there for them.
?
Do you see people leaving - or not getting into - the job hunt because they don't think they can get a job?

There is nothing, NOTHING quite like New York City! And even if it's a clich?', I've gotta say - I LOVE NEW YORK!
A couple weeks ago, I made my seemingly annual summer trip to the Big Apple to speak at Columbia University. Only this time, instead of just bringing my wife, Marvelyne, I also drug along my parents.
My dad was celebrating his 70th birthday the day we arrived and I wanted his first trip to the city to be one he'd never forget. And I'm pretty sure we accomplished that - and more!
Within six hours, Dad had taken his first limo ride, tasted the best soul food on earth, mastered the subway, walked thru Times Square and, of course, caught a glimpse of some of NYC's "colorful" people. Not a bad time for a self-admitted hillbilly from Missouri!
While riding the D train uptown, we had another experience that, to me, just sums up New York. A guy stood up on the subway and, with all the finesse of a master orator, began speaking to the passengers.
"My name is BLUE and I'm a local New York City poet. I've written four books, most recently, 'Don't Beat Your Children Or They'll Turn Out Like Me.' It includes one of my favorites, 'A Good Way To Tell That You're In A Bad Neighborhood Is When You See A Lot Of Churches.'"
We all had a laugh at the titles which, of course, was his intent. But, really, BLUE is a serious businessman. I mean, he's taken the time to write, edit, publish, and advertise at least four books. He has a website up and running. And instead of relying on the conventional methods of selling, he's pounding the pavement (errr riding the subway) promoting his art AND giving passengers some entertainment.
Being an author, I'm often asked about how to write a book. Sooooo many people have a dream, a thought, a vision of writing - but don't know where to begin. I know that feeling very well! Yet, when people get down to brass tacks and learn how much time, energy and money it'll take to get the book out there, they often decide to leave it as a dream. The investment seems to much if there's not a sure fire major publishing contract in the offering. BLUE is NOT one of these people!
Not everyone can get their books in bookstores and available to a national audience. (Actually MOST people can't.) It doesn't really matter if the quality of writing surpasses Shakespeare - and the story line is the next Harry Potter. If no one knows about it, it's as if it doesn't exist at all.
The thing that so impressed me about BLUE is how he's out there, not living on a dream, but doing what he can to make that dream happen. He may not have a bazillion dollar advance with a major publisher, but he's got a gift for being in front of an audience and he uses that gift every day on the train. He exemplifies the "Change the things you can" message my audiences witness - and I'm proud I got to witness his art in its natural environment.
With all the economy woes and corporate troubles, everyone seems really focused on just getting by, day to day. Who can follow a dream when there's rent due, food to buy, debt to pay down? There's this whole practical side of life to contend with, right?
I'm big on reality and doing what needs to be done to survive. I also know this: if we wait for every detail to be perfect - we will probably never see our dreams become reality. Why? Because perfection doesn't exist.
Instead of waiting for the perfect time, scenario, etc., look around. See what there is that you CAN do... right now. When we change our life, touch our community, help our neighbor, follow our dream - then we can really see how our individual actions can help change the world.

Once again the annual Salesian Conference sponsored by DeSales Resource and Ministry was a wonderful opportunity to connect with people in faith about important topics that inspire all who seek to follow the ways of St. Francis de Sales.? As a teacher at Visitation School in Mendota Heights, I not only grow in my personal faith life through the presentations and conversations the annual Conference provides, but I also gain valuable insights about our Salesian heritage that I share with my students.
St. Francis explains prayer as a response to God?s love?the prayer begins with God sharing God?s loving heart with us and ends with our great ?I love you too.?
I admit that as a teacher, I am always a learner as well.? I have pages of notes from the lectures of Fr. Eunan McDonnell, SDB, this year?s featured presenter, all of which will inform my teaching this year.? But, there are a few of Fr. Eunan?s teachings that will definitely be a part of my senior religion class curriculum this fall.
This year, all seniors at Visitation will be taking a newly created elective called ?Salesian Leadership.?? The idea of the course is to combine the practice of prayer with the students? experiences of liturgical, retreat, and service leadership.? Early on in my career teaching high school religion, I realized that service cannot be activism (as Fr. Eunan warned), but it should stem from an intimate relationship with Jesus.? St. Francis de Sales? teachings on prayer will aid in making this course a transformative experience for students and teachers alike!
Prayer is an intimate relationship, a friendship; it takes us out of ourselves to be a gift for God and for others.
St. Francis explains prayer as a response to God?s love?the prayer begins with God sharing God?s loving heart with us and ends with our great ?I love you too.?? I especially love St. Francis? image of God as the perfume that arouses us to prayer and the sun that warms and enlightens us to prayer.
Prayer is an intimate relationship, a friendship; it takes us out of ourselves to be a gift for God and for others.? I was struck by Fr. Eunan?s many references to this intimate prayer relationship between God and person like that of marriage.? St. Francis teaches that God kisses humanity through Mary, that God weds God?s self to humanity in the Incarnation of our Lord.? What a passionate and loving image of God! ?How can we NOT respond to this intimate love of God in prayer?? This image of marriage, of course, is Biblical.? We have included the study reading and study of the Song of Songs in our senior courses, but this direct connection to the prayer relationship with the Incarnate God will lead to really great discussions and hopefully even better experiences of prayer and leadership in our courses this year.
The marriage image continues as Fr. Eunan asks the question, ?how do we know we have prayed well??? How do we know we have ?kissed God on the mouth??? He answers, ?Check your heart!? How are you in your relationships with others?? Especially with the person you love the least??? During the conference, the sighs, the nods, the comments, the silence, was very telling as Fr. Eunan reached his point.? Like the marriage vows, do we kiss God?obey him (obedience) and do his will (fidelity) so that our love brings us out of our self?? How do we love God who we can?t see if we don?t love the neighbor that we can see?? All of us in the room that wonderful afternoon knew this, had heard it before.? But for me, the context St. Francis puts this in?the prayer relationship?must have a struck a special chord.? I am hoping that by helping students understand the God who is in a loving prayer relationship with them, a marital relationship in the most theological sense, they will begin to accept God?s grace to help them in the events of their everyday life, their relationships, and their leadership experiences.
?how do we know we have prayed well??? [Fr. Eunan] answers, ?Check your heart!? How are you in your relationships with others?? Especially with the person you love the least??
This connection between the solitary prayer relationship we have with God (accepting the ?affective? love of God) and the relationships we have with others (accepting the ?effective? love of God) will be the end goal of our teachings about prayer.? As St. Francis illustrated, we are like magnets.? Just as the metal attracted to the magnet becomes magnetized, so we draw to God in prayer and begin to take on the attributes of God?just in time to reach out to our neighbor with the love of God.? I cannot think of a better lesson, ?not for school, but for life,? that we can teach our students at Visitation.? God bless De Sales Resources and Ministry in their very important work on behalf of the Salesian community!
