In the Midst of Outages, Verizon Imposes New Fee (NewsFactor)

Verizon Wireless is pulling a Netflix of sorts. In the midst of three unexplained data outages in less than a month, the wireless carrier decided to start charging customers a $2 fee to pay their bill on its Web site. To say that customers are angry would be an understatement.

"[A] new $2 payment convenience fee will be instituted for customers who make single bill payments online or by telephone," Verizon Wireless announced on its Web site Thursday. The new charges are official beginning Jan. 15, but customers aren't wasting any time complaining about the "convenience fee."

Indeed, the social-media world is abuzz with complaints over the new fee in a way that's reminiscent of the recent Bank of America debit-card-fee drama. Bank of America backpedaled under pressure. So far, Verizon is holding its course. Although the company now blames its data outages on growing pains, the company isn't yet responding to the latest complaints.

Worst Move Ever?

"As if Verizon doesn't make enough money already. I prefer to not use the automatic payments so that I can make sure I have enough money in my account each month. I always pay my bill within a few days of receiving the e-mail," Christina Budd wrote on Verizon Wireless' Facebook page Friday morning. "How about you reward the people who pay on time, instead of punishing them?"

Meanwhile, Matt Beggs wrote, "I hope you enjoy losing almost $200 a month because you wanted to get another $2 out of me." Others took the occasion to start complaining about Verizon's Total Equipment Coverage. Still others reverted to the good old-fashioned "boo" on the wireless carrier's Facebook page. One Facebook follower posted the e-mail addresses of Verizon executives.

"OK, so I see you want to charge me $2 to pay my bill online. I have 15 months to go on my contract. I have figured I can cut $100 a month off my bill," writes Bentz Kirby on Verizon's Facebook page. "So, I will trade you my savings of $1,500 for your rip-off of $30. Then, when my contract is up, I will move my phone lines to another company and you will lose that income stream too. So, enjoy your $2 a month while you lose in the long run. Worst move ever by you, Verizon."

Communications Snafu

"Part of this uproar is based on an incomplete or inaccurate consumer understanding of what's going on. The belief initially was that Verizon was going to charge people for making all online bill payments. It's only 'one-time' payments, according to the company," said Greg Sterling, principal analyst at Sterling Market Intelligence.

More broadly, people believe there are zero costs incurred by Verizon for online billing, he said, so there's a perception that the company is trying to take advantage of customers unfairly or unjustifiably.

"This PR snafu isn't as bad as Netflix, which had several in a concentrated period of time," Sterling concluded. "But it does illustrate how companies are no longer at liberty to simply impose changes unilaterally on the public without risk to their reputations and brands."

Reuters Columnist: Economy Would Be Better Off If Fed-Ex Workers Had a Union Like UPS- 12/28/11

By Doug Cunningham

Reuters columnist David Kay Johnston says if it were as easy to organize a union at Fed-Ex as it is at UPS, workers and the economy would be better off with the union advantage. Johnston says Fed-Ex has a special exemption under labor law and isn't covered under the National Labor relations Act. The UPS Teamsters union workers earn $12-18 more per hour in wages and benefits than Fed-Ex workers do.

[David Cay Johnston]: "The biggest problem in our economy right now is lack of demand. Workers don't make enough money, and enough workers don't have jobs to sustain the economy. A big reason for that is that companies like Fed-Ex that get special treatment have persuaded Congress that making them be on equal footing with their competitors would damage the economy overall."

Longform?s Best Writing About Sex in 2011

?It was the sort of easily mocked, over-the-top statement that Ted might make, but he himself never actually put it in those terms. Ted has been vague about his sexuality since moving back to Colorado Springs in 2008. He says that he still believes the Bible is clear that 'homosexuality is not God's best plan for people,' but his stance on the issue has softened to the point of near incomprehensibility. After the camping trip, when I asked him about the wording he once used to describe his same-sex urges?in 2006 he wrote in a letter to New Life's congregation that he was warring with a 'repulsive and dark' part of himself?he backtracked, saying he never meant it that way. 'There's nothing repulsive to me about that world, but it's not a temptation anymore.'

?When we get back from the mountains, I drive up to Denver to visit Mike Jones. Jones, a soft-spoken inverted triangle of a man, chuckles at the idea of Ted's temptation-free heterosexual existence. 'He can call it whatever he wants,' he says, 'but... please.' In Jones's 2007 tell-all, I Had to Say Something, he describes drug-fueled porn-watching sessions, fumbling attempts at oral sex, and an occasion on which Art from Kansas City paid him to have sex with another man while he watched. Jones was once proud of exposing a conservative hypocrite, but as he shows me around his modest one-bedroom apartment, he tells me that he's had trouble keeping a steady job since the scandal and that when potential boyfriends Google him, they mostly flee in horror.

? 'I wouldn't do it again,' he says. 'It's ruined my life, too.' "

Afghanistan, China sign first oil contract

(AP) ? Afghanistan's government signed a deal Wednesday with China's state-owned National Petroleum Corporation, allowing it to become the first foreign company to exploit the country's oil and natural gas reserves.

The contract, which covers the northeastern provinces of Sari Pul and Faryab, is the first of several such blocks to be put on the market in coming months, Afghan Minister of Mines Wahidullah Shahrani said during the signing ceremony.

Bidding information for blocks in neighboring Balkh province will be released at the end of February, and for the western Herat province by next summer, he said.

Afghanistan has been seeking to find ways to exploit some of its mineral wealth to offset the loss of revenues when foreign aid and spending drops when international combat troops leave by the end of 2014. The government has been keen to develop an oil-extraction and refining capability for the landlocked nation, which is entirely reliant on fuel imports from neighboring Iran and Central Asian nations.

"This will bring enormous financial benefits to the government," Shahrani said. "It will be an important step toward self-sufficiency."

The ministry listed the initial value of the project with CNPC as $700 million. But the total could be ten times greater if more reserves are found and developed, and if international oil prices remain at today's levels, Shahrani said.

The fuel pact allows the Chinese firm to research oil and natural gas blocks in Sari Pul and Faryab, an area known as the Amu Darya River Basin that was first explored by Soviet engineers in the 1960s. The Soviets estimated the reserves at about 87 million barrels, but both the Afghan and Chinese partners believe they will prove to be much larger.

CNPC will also build a refinery ? Afghanistan's first ? within the next three years, after the real size of the reserves is established with greater accuracy, said Lu Gong Xun, president of CNPC's international branch.

Shahrani said the deal calls for the Afghan government to receive 70 percent of the profits from the sale of the oil and natural gas. CNPC will also pay 15 percent in royalties, as well as corporate taxes and rent for the land used for its operations.

Afghanistan's army and police will set up special units to guard the project, Shahrani said.

The provinces of Sari Pul and Faryab are located hundreds of miles from the centers of fighting in the east and southeast and are considered relatively safe. As a result, the U.S.-led NATO force has already transferred or is turning over responsibility for security in large parts of the region to the Afghan army and police.

Surveys conducted by the Soviets have shown that Afghanistan sits on vast mineral wealth. Afghan and foreign companies already have shown interest, notably in its untapped copper, iron and oil deposits. But with poor infrastructure and security problems stemming from the 10-year war, most Western mining companies have shied away from firm commitments.

So far, companies from China ? with which Afghanistan shares a small stretch of border in its east ? have been in the forefront of investments in the nation.

Three years ago the China Metallurgical Construction Co. signed a contract to develop the Aynak copper mine in Logar province. Beijing's $3.5 billion stake in the mine is the largest foreign investment in Afghanistan so far.

The U.S. Defense Department has put a $1 trillion price tag on Afghanistan's mineral reserves. Other estimates have pegged it at $3 trillion or more.

But the potential windfall for the landlocked country will require international investment, a better transportation network and much improved security.

"This government must stand on its feet," said Mustafa Zahir, the head of the government's environment agency. "Without using our natural resources we cannot achieve this."

    Katnip Lounge: PSA for pets!

    Kitties!

?It's The Daddy, with a GREAT announcement concerning lost pets.

I was working last Saturday morning when the phone rang--I answered and got a computer generated message--and I almost hung up, thinking it was a telemarketer. But just as I was about to press END...I heard "PET AMBER ALERT...PET AMBER ALERT!" ?So I listened and found out a Border Collie Woofie named BRINKS was lost in our neighborhood!

(To our foreign readers, an "Amber Alert" is a PSA that goes out for missing children.)

The message was detailed and informative, told me ALL about BRINKS, and a number to call if he was found/seen. ?I wrote the number down and called to find out more about BRINKS, like what part of our neighborhood was he last seen? ?And guess what? ?When I called I got BRINKS? dad on the phone, and BRINKS was already home! ?Somebody else had seen BRINKS after getting the same phone call and got him to come to them.

Apparently,?PETAMBERALERT.COM?is AWESOME. ?It's available in the US and Canada. ? BRINKS? dad found the site, signed up, and it automatically faxed and emailed ALL the surrounding VETS and SHELTERS.

Then, if that wasn?t good enough--it calls EVERYBODY [like me] within a THREE MILE radius, BRINKS lived two miles away from us!

(BRINKS didn?t even live in our 'hood, thank Cod...we don?t need any woofies here, and you know what happens to strays that show up at our door.)

It does cost money to use--but they're worth it, right?

    Pets are priceless!

    Happy Monday!

Christmas Presents Thief Busted by iPad Tracking Signal

WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif. (KTLA) -- Technology, and some top-notch police work, saved Christmas for two Southern California families.

On Christmas morning, a homeowner in Westlake Village was awakened by a noise, and found an intruder inside his house, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Dept. said in a news release.

The victim chased the suspect a short distance, but the intruder got away.

It was discovered that, among other items, an iPad was taken from the victim's home.

Later that same morning, the victim called the Malibu/Lost Hills sheriff's station to say that the stolen iPad was giving a signal from a nearby home.

Deputies responded to the location and recovered the iPad.

They arrested 20-year-old Patrick Krewson, a resident of Vista, in San Diego County.

Detectives conducted a follow-up investigation, and connected Krewson to a burglary in Vista on Dec. 22.

Two flat-screen televisions, a laptop computer and more than 40 Christmas presents intended for children were stolen in that burglary.

Deputies searched Krewson's home in Vista and found all of the stolen property, including the presents.

When detectives notified the Vista victim that her Christmas presents had been found in time to give them to the children for Christmas, she began to cry, authorities said.

Krewson was booked for burglary at the Malibu/Lost Hills Station, and is being held in lieu of $50,000 bail.

San Diego County Sheriff?s Department will file additional burglary charges.

Five killed in Connecticut house fire (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Authorities said two adults and three children were killed as fire tore through a large house in Stamford, Connecticut, early on Christmas morning.

Stamford Mayor Michael Pavia and acting fire chief Antonio Conte confirmed the fatalities from the scene of the blaze, which began just before 5:00 a.m. in the Shippan Point neighborhood near the city's harbor.

"Three adults and two children lost their lives," Pavia said in news video posted on the Stamford Advocate newspaper's website.

"At this point, we have nothing further to say, except that our hearts and prayers go out to the family and to emergency personnel on the scene," he added.

Calls to the mayor's office and Stamford fire department were not immediately returned, as offices were closed for the weekend and the Christmas holiday.

Video showed fire ripping through a house in the residential district of large homes.

It was unclear whether all the victims were members of the same family. Conte could not immediately say whether the deceased adults were the parents of the three children, as the fire was still being investigated, he said.

Conte said teams were working to secure the fire, to determine its cause and to recover bodies. He added that officials would have no further comment until later in the day.

A three-alarm blaze at a building on Shippan Avenue was called in at 4:53 a.m., Stamford Fire & Rescue announced in an early morning Twitter message.

Stamford is on Connecticut's shore on Long Island Sound, about 40 miles northeast of New York City.

Vermillion acquires Correlogic ovarian cancer diagnostics business

    MDBR Staff Writer
    Published 20 December 2011

Vermillion has completed the acquisition of Correlogic Systems's entire ovarian cancer diagnostics business for $435,000 in cash.

The assets comprises more than 1,000 diagnostic samples from ovarian tumor studies, three biomarker-related pending US patents, proprietary software and other intellectual property.

Vermillion is planning to use these assets to develop its next-generation ovarian cancer test - OVA2.

Vermillion CEO Gail Page said while Vermillion notes the loss of a substantial competitor, the acquisition of these assets will enhance their development efforts, and provides savings in terms of time and cost.

Sony and Samsung have decided to part ways on their seven-year-old LCD venture. Possibly due to Sony's recent struggles in the increasingly competitive world of TV division, Samsung will buy up its 50 percent share for around $939 million. The Japanese company has agreed to a new strategic agreement to source Sammy's LCDs in the future and, according to Sony, will continue "cooperative engineering efforts focused on LCD panel technology." Its full explanation follows after the break.

Humane Society against pets as presents|WLFI - Lafayette, Indiana

    LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - ?

Every year animal shelters see more adoptions than usual around Christmas time.

    ?

But officials say while this is great that the animals are getting adopted out to families and good homes, they often run into a problem.?

    ?

They say a lot of times they see these animals being brought back to the shelter soon after.?

    ?

Michelle Warren with the Almost Home Humane Society in Lafayette says this is because most of the time when people adopt pets to give as Christmas presents, the person who is receiving the pet might not be ready to take on the responsibility.

    ?

Warren says with everyone being so busy around the holidays, the animal might not get as much care as they really need. ? ? ? ?

    ?

"It's such a hectic time for the families. And then if you keep in mind for the animals about what they've been through and going into a new setting with all of the commotion, it just makes it a little more stressful. So we encourage people to adopt a little before and a little bit once things settle down," Executive Director of Almost Home Humane Society, Michelle Warren, said.?

    @#

    ?

Warren says its best to get that special someone a gift certificate to the Humane Society and let them wait until the right time to adopt a pet.?

Mitt Romney Would Be One of America's Wealthiest Presidents (ContributorNetwork)

If Mitt Romney is elected president in 2012, one thing that will be discussed is his net worth. The Los Angeles Times reports Dec. 22 that Romney hasn't divulged his income tax returns and doesn't plan on doing so while he is running for president. The New York Times reported Dec. 11 that Romney has been criticized for offering a $10,000 bet on his position regarding health care. That amount of money struck a nerve with voters who feel Romney is out of touch with Americans who are suffering because of the economic recession.

Here's a look at how Romney's finances and wealth stack up to presidents of the past.

    Romney's Income

Romney started his path to riches when he became vice president of Bain & Co. in 1978. CNN reported he earned and MBA at Harvard and then latched on with Boston Consulting Group before going up the corporate ladder.

Six years after learning the ins and outs of the investment industry, Romney started his own company in 1984 called Bain Capital. The company is a private equity company spun off from the Bain Company. Romney spent 15 years at Bain Capital. When he had political ambitions in Massachusetts, Romney quit his job but was able to put a lot of his wealth into investments as he retired from a private sector job.

His net worth in in 2007 was calculated at $202 million. He makes cash when he sells stock. The Boston Globe reported in August that the presidential candidate was going to bulldoze his $12 million beachfront mansion in La Jolla, Calif., and replace it with an 11,000 square-foot home that is nearly quadruple in size from the older one.

    Past Presidents

In terms of past presidents who have actually held office, Romney's wealth pales in comparison to some famous names. The Atlantic Monthly reported on the wealth of presidents in May 2010. Romney's wealth nearly exceeds all of the previous nine presidents combined, including Barack Obama. John F. Kennedy's family estate was valued at $1 billion in today's dollars, the last president to be worth more than Romney's $202 million figure.

George Washington, based upon his family's land ownership and wealth accumulation, was worth around $525 million. Thomas Jefferson, despite his opulent mansion at Monticello, was worth around only $212 million. Abraham Lincoln owned less than $1 million in assets with his home in Illinois.

Should Romney be elected president, his personal assets will be on the side of one of the wealthiest presidents to hold office in United States history.

Justice Department antitrust division probing Verizon cable spectrum deals

Looks like AT&T isn't the only major carrier having issues with the guv'ment lately. Remember that 20MHz AWS spectrum that Verizon got from Cox Communications for a cool $315 million this month? How's about that juicy spectrum Big Red scored from Comcast, Time Warner and Bright House for $3.6 billion? Well, it turns out those deals are raising an eyebrow or two over at the Justice Department, which just launched an investigation into the matter. A spokesperson for the department confirmed the probe with Bloomberg News but declined to provide further details. A source familiar with the investigation, however, says the antitrust division is involved. Apparently, there's concern that the deal puts too much control of the airwaves in the hands of Verizon. For its part, Verizon declined to comment, saying it has yet to receive information about the investigation.

EU court upholds bar on Iran group terrorism listing (Reuters)

BRUSSELS (Reuters) ? The EU's highest court upheld a decision Wednesday to remove an Iranian opposition group from the EU's terrorism blacklist, a ruling that could affect the fate of thousands of the organization's members stranded in Iraq.

France had appealed against a decision by a lower EU court that ordered the European bloc to remove the People's Mujahideen Organization of Iran (PMOI) from its terrorism list, but the European Court of Justice rejected the appeal.

It upheld a 2008 decision by the ECJ's court of first instance, which held that the EU had failed to provide the PMOI with evidence that formed the basis of a decision to keep it on the terrorism list.

"The adoption of such a decision must, in principle, be preceded by notification of the incriminating evidence and by allowing the person or entity concerned an opportunity of being heard," it said.

French officials said they regretted the court's ruling and pointed out that some of Paris' closest allies continue to list the PMOI as a terrorist organization.

The PMOI, which strongly opposes Iran's clerical rulers, waged a violent insurgency against the Shah in the 1970s and staged attacks on U.S. interests, but now says it has renounced violence and supports secularism and democracy.

Despite lobbying on the group's behalf, the United States still lists it as a terrorist organization.

The EU dropped its terrorist designation in 2009 after the 2008 court case. EU officials said the decision was based on the legal case and not a result of concluding that it was no longer a terrorist group.

The group's status is an important issue right now, as it could have an impact on 3,000 activists stranded at a camp in Iraq, where they were once guests of former leader Saddam Hussein and later received protection from U.S. troops.

The government of Iraq, which is friendly with Tehran, says it will close Camp Ashraf by the end of this year, leaving just days to resolve their fate.

Washington has tried to persuade the activists to accept a U.N. plan to move to a new camp near Baghdad airport. From there, they could eventually be resettled abroad, which is easier to organize if countries do not list them as terrorists.

Camp residents say they fear for their safety now that U.S. troops have withdrawn from Iraq, ending their nine-year presence.

In a statement, PMOI leader Maryam Rajavi welcomed the court's decision and called on the United States to take the PMOI off its terrorism list, saying the residents of Camp Ashraf had suffered the consequences of the listing.

Tuesday, Rajavi said the PMOI would agree to the U.N. plan provided the United Nations, the United States and European Union supported and endorsed the proposal and the Iraqi government guaranteed the residents' security and well-being.

(AP) ? The House has passed a $1 trillion-plus catchall budget bill paying for day-to-day operations of 10 Cabinet departments and averting a government shutdown, while Senate talks on renewing a payroll tax cut and jobless benefits reached a critical phase.

The 296-121 vote to approve the spending measure represented a rare moment of bipartisanship in a polarized Capitol. The Senate's top Republican, meanwhile, raised the stakes in the showdown over the payroll tax cut, insisting he won't back a compromise extension unless the bill includes language aimed at forcing construction of a Canada-to-Texas pipeline.

As negotiations on the payroll tax bill proceeded Friday, Senate GOP Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said, "I will not be able to support the package that doesn't include the pipeline."

The GOP's pipeline demands added uncertainty to efforts by McConnell and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., to quickly reach a deal on a bill renewing payroll tax cuts and jobless benefits for the long-term unemployed.

Negotiators on the payroll tax measure worked behind closed doors Friday in hopes of sealing agreement on how to pay for the measure. Simply extending the current 2 percentage point payroll tax cut would cost $120 billion, while extending unemployment benefits for the long-term jobless and preventing a cut in Medicare payment to physicians would add tens of billions of dollars more.

A House-passed version of the payroll tax bill would give President Barack Obama 60 days to decide whether to build the proposed, 1,700-mile Keystone XL pipeline.

Obama, with the support of congressional Democrats, has announced he will delay that decision until after next year's elections, citing a need to study the impact the pipeline would have on sensitive lands in Nebraska. Obama has threatened to reject a payroll tax bill if it includes language easing work on the pipeline.

The postponement would let Democrats avoid having to choose between two of the party's core constituencies: environmentalists who oppose Keystone and some unions who covet the jobs it would produce.

But McConnell and other Republicans say the project would create thousands of jobs. The company's developer, TransCanada, says it could produce up to 20,000 jobs, while critics say the figure would be fewer than 3,500, including less than 1,000 that would be permanent.

After passing the catchall spending bill House leaders sent their members home until Monday or later, planning to return when the Senate produces a payroll tax cut measure for the House to vote on.

The way was smoother for the compromise spending bill, which passed on a 296-121 vote. It would fund 10 Cabinet-level departments, such as the Pentagon and the Department of Education, and dozens of smaller agencies. It would finance everything from U.S. operations in Iraq and Afghanistan to veterans' services, and from airport security inspections to Congress' own operations.

Reid and McConnell said that even if only the House had approved the spending bill by midnight Friday, the Obama administration agreed there would be no federal shutdown. For extra measure, the House also passed two stopgap spending bills, one to fund the government for a single day and the other for a week.

Agreement on the spending legislation was reached after Republicans agreed to drop language that would have blocked Obama from easing rules on people who visit and send money to relatives in Cuba. But a GOP provision will stay in the bill thwarting a 2007 law, passed during President George W. Bush's administration, on energy efficiency standards that critics argued would make it hard for people to purchase inexpensive incandescent light bulbs.

This year's 4.2 percent payroll tax rate will jump back to its normal 6.2 percent on Jan. 1 unless action is taken by Congress. Few lawmakers want to be blamed for a tax increase that would affect 160 million people.

Extended benefits for long-term jobless people will also expire Jan. 1 without congressional action.

That same day, a 27 percent cut in Medicare reimbursements to doctors would take effect unless lawmakers act, a reduction that could convince some doctors to stop treating Medicare patients.

Obama and congressional Democrats have proposed dropping next year's payroll tax rate to 3.1 percent, but an extension of this year's 4.2 percent rate seems likely to prevail. The payroll tax is the major source of financing for Social Security.

Obama also wants to leave in place the current maximum of 99 weeks of benefits for the long-term unemployed. A payroll tax cut bill approved by the House reduces that total by 20 weeks, which the administration says would cut off 3.3 million individuals. Democrats are hoping to soften if not reverse what's in the House version.

Even without the Keystone pipeline dispute, bargainers had still not reached agreement on how to extend a payroll tax cut through 2012, with major disagreements remaining over how to finance the package.

The spending bill advanced after Democrats blocked a series of GOP assaults on Environmental Protection Agency regulations, though the agency's budget absorbed a cut of more than 3 percent.

GOP leaders did succeed in delays in regulations of coal dust and eliminating federal funding of needle exchange programs.

War costs would be $115 billion, a $43 billion cut from the previous year.

Atheist intellectual Christopher Hitchens dead at 62 (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? British-born journalist and atheist intellectual Christopher Hitchens, who made the United States his home and backed the 2003 U.S. invasion of Iraq, died on Thursday at the age of 62.

Hitchens died in Houston of pneumonia, a complication of cancer of the esophagus, Vanity Fair magazine said.

"Christopher Hitchens - the incomparable critic, masterful rhetorician, fiery wit, and fearless bon vivant - died today at the age of 62," Vanity Fair said.

A heavy smoker and drinker, Hitchens cut short a book tour for his memoir "Hitch 22" last year to undergo chemotherapy after being diagnosed with cancer.

As a journalist, war correspondent and literary critic, Hitchens carved out a reputation for barbed repartee, scathing critiques of public figures and a fierce intelligence.

In his 2007 book "God Is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything," Hitchens took on major religions with his trenchant atheism. He argued that religion was the source of all tyranny and that many of the world's evils have been done in the name of religion.

The son of a British naval officer, Hitchens studied at Oxford University and worked as literary critic for the New Statesman magazine in London before moving to New York to work as a journalist in 1981. He settled in Washington the following year, initially as correspondent for the left-wing magazine The Nation. He retained his British citizenship when he became an American citizen in 2007.

Hitchens was not one to mince words. In his book on Bill Clinton "No one left to lie to", he called the former U.S. president a "rapist" and a "con man." He once referred to Mother Teresa of Calcutta as a "fanatical Albanian dwarf."

The author of 25 books - including works on Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Paine and George Orwell - and countless articles and columns, Hitchens never lost his biting humor.

    'CANCER ELITE'

"I'm a member of a cancer elite. I rather look down on people with lesser cancers," Hitchens said in an interview with CBS "60 Minutes" aired on March 6, 2011.

In a 2010 interview with Reuters, Hitchens dismissed criticism that he moved from left to right and helped former U.S. President George W. Bush sell the 2003 war with Iraq to the American public with what turned out to be bad intelligence about weapons of mass destruction.

"Saddam was an enemy of the civilized world and he should have been taken out a long time before," Hitchens said of Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein. "I have no regrets about that at all."

The 2001 attacks on the United States by Islamic fundamentalists in hijacked passenger planes made Hitchens ever more critical of the role of religion in the world, and led him to appreciate the merits of American democracy.

"I am absolutely convinced that the main source of hatred in the world is religion, and organized religion," he wrote.

Hitchens is survived by his wife, Carol Blue; their daughter, Antonia; and his children from a previous marriage, Alexander and Sophia, Vanity Fair said.

In his last essay on www.vanityfair.com, dated "January 2012," Hitchens said his illness made him question the saying attributed to German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche that "Whatever doesn't kill me makes me stronger."

A painkiller injection just before typing the article titled "Trial of the Will," Hitchens wrote, caused "numbness in the extremities, filling me with the not irrational fear that I shall lose the ability to write. Without that ability, I feel sure in advance, my 'will to live' would be hugely attenuated."

LinkedIn Rolls Out Polling for Groupsvar NREUMQ=NREUMQ||[];NREUMQ.push(["mark","firstbyte",new Date().getTime()]); (Mashable)

Aiming to spur more conversation among its one million Groups, LinkedIn on Wednesday announced Polls, a new feature that's designed to get a quick read on an issue. Ian McCarthy, principal product manager at LinkedIn, wrote via the LinkedIn Blog that the feature came about after Group Moderators shared that they were looking for "easy, time-sensitive ways to generate conversations within the group." Apparently, such conversations weren't happening quickly enough after Moderators posted articles or blogged their thoughts. Polls was devised to get more conversation flowing.

[More from Mashable: The 10 Most Overused LinkedIn Profile Buzzwords of 2011]

Although McCarthy addresses Group Moderators in his post, anyone in a Group can create a poll. However, Moderators can restrict the creation of new polls from their Group Settings.

LinkedIn is trying out Polls out in Harvard Business Review's Group of 150 and as of press time, received 64 responses. That number is a strong participant-to-non-participant ratio, but the results were no doubt influenced in part by the novelty of the experiment. However, adding the Poll function addresses what's perceived to be a major issue for LinkedIn: The lack of activities there beyond networking and job seeking.

[More from Mashable: LinkedIn Boot Camp [INFOGRAPHIC]]

The ability to poll on LinkedIn is not new. However, until now, such polls have been public rather than aimed at Groups. The enhancement is the latest for Groups, which has evolved from merely a badge with no real functionality to small communities within the site.

What do you think? Do you use Groups? If not, will polling engage you more? Sound off in the comments.

New Google+ features power up Hangouts

Google+ announced several new features for Hangouts Wednesday.

    By Craig Kanalley
    Social Media Editor, NBC News

"Hangouts" have been described as the "killer app" of Google+ since the social networking site debuted last summer.

In September, a series of new features were rolled out, making Hangouts even more robust, including screen-sharing, "On Air" to broadcast to more than 10 people and Hangouts for mobile.

Wednesday, in a blog post, Google announced a series of new features and they all center around Hangouts. While "On Air" is still in testing with select accounts, like The Muppets, it will be expanded to more public figures. Google hinted that the feature could be available to all in the future.

Here are other Hangout features that were announced:

    • Ability to launch a Hangout from any post at any time; basically, turning the comments section into a real-time video chat.
    • "On Air" integration with YouTube; when you go "off air," the full-length recording of the Hangout goes to your YouTube account (private by default).
    • Phone integration so you can call anybody into a Hangout; free calls to U.S. and Canada.
    • A list of active Hangouts in the right-hand side of your stream.
    • Notifications to your mobile device when you are invited to a Hangout.
    • Virtual antlers for anyone in a Hangout ? available this month, in the spirit of the holidays.

Googlers shared the news excitedly to their accounts. VP of Engineering Vic Gundotra posted about the new features with the hashtag #seasonforshipping. Community Manager Natalie Villalobos introduced the changes by saying, "Just Another Morning at Google+ HQ."

From their posts, word of the new features quickly got around the Google+ network. Gundotra's post was shared 482 times (see how it spread here).

Google+ power users applauded the news. Serial entrepreneur Tom Rolfson said, "More proof the Google+ team is listening and adding requested features." Business consultant Alex Grossman added, "Good to see Hangouts getting more attention."

Tech evangelist Robert Scoble called the new features "major," adding: "Looks like we'll soon be able to broadcast hangouts and record them, too. I hear these will come to a small set of users first, then spread to the rest of us. As soon as I get these features I'll use them a LOT. Good stuff!"
